Weighted blankets, do they work?

RockaLock · 30/01/2024 21:31

DS(17) is having trouble getting to sleep and is convinced that a weighted blanket will help him get a good nights sleep.

Does anyone have one - do they work, or is it just another gimmick?

Bought one for DS but he wasn't keen - I love it!

1daughterand3sons · 30/01/2024 22:16

Dd 17 has a 4kg weighted blanket she been using it for a few years now and sleep has improved not has much has we hoped but it is better than it was before.

I tried using it and it's not for me I didn't like the weight of it.

Brightredtulips · 30/01/2024 22:16

I'm an adult woman who kept waking at silly o'clock. I bought a single weighted blanket from ikea and I haven't looked back. I have it over my body then a duvet. I sleep deeply every night now

Greensleevevssnotnose · 30/01/2024 22:18

Mine gave me nightmares, felt I was buried alive, the dog likes it though

greentreetop · 30/01/2024 22:18

I brought the simba at Xmas and have slept like a log every night. The one night my do pinched it I never slept properly. Highly recommend, I believe it needs to be 10% of your body weight to be effective

My DD has a double one so it drapes completely over her. It has been a game changer for sleeping. She falls asleep really quickly with it.

snowlady4 · 30/01/2024 22:22

I have an oodie one. It's ok but weighs an absolute tonne!- nightmare to wash/dry, too heavy for the bed. It's become the emergency hangover blanket for the sofa!
With the oodie ones, you are recommended one based on your own weight, which is what I ordered. I wouldn't want one as heavy again tbh.

msmatcha · 30/01/2024 22:28

I bought ours from John Lewis, they are lovely, feel like a hug.

mateysmum · 30/01/2024 22:30

Adult DS has one and loves it. He has anxiety and struggles to switch off at bedtime. He also sometimes just sits on the sofa snuggled in it and finds it a great help. I think his is a koala brand.

RockaLock · 30/01/2024 22:35

Hmm.

Thinking about it, DS's current duvet is really really light and thin. Like ridiculously thin.

Maybe I should just try him with a heavier duvet first and see if that helps at all.

Try a nice heavy blanket and see if he likes the sensation?

Nickinoo22 · 31/01/2024 03:00

I like mine until I get restless and then it is uncomfortable as can end up in the wrong place and the bed is like a battle field in the morning where I have obviously been kicking the covers around 😟

garlictwist · 31/01/2024 04:55

I have one and I hate it! It's too heavy and I feel squashed and chlostaphobic. Or however you spell it.

dailyduel · 31/01/2024 06:32

I got one on a deal with I bought my Oodie. It was too heavy. I gave it away and my friend felt it was too heavy I do like the feel of a blanket onto of my duvet. May try again but with something lighter.

TeenDivided · 31/01/2024 07:27

My DD has one and it helped, whether placebo or real I'm not sure.

I have ended up tying the bottom corners to the bedposts to stop it sliding off, it is heavy so to shake out the underlying duvet is a bit of a pain.

reluctantbrit · 31/01/2024 07:44

DD and I both have one, we actually use it on top of our normal thin wollen duvets so they don't need constant washing.

We have the Kuddly ones. DD definitely sleeps better, she has ASD and ADHD and I use it when I am stressed.

But - you have to like the feel of something heavy on you, DH tried it and absolutely hates it, I personally love having duvets and blankets piled on top of me anyway.

And - in Summer it does get hot, we only really use them from September - March and even then I sometimes wake up and throw it off me. But I am in my menopause so I do get hot sometimes during the night.

Augustus40 · 31/01/2024 07:50

I definitely think it stops me waking early so I use it all year round except for the summer.

MargaretThursday · 31/01/2024 09:07

Ds loves his. It's the first thing he packs to go away. Good thing we don't fly really. He says it's like being hugged all night. Main issue is washing.
I got one for dd2, thinking she'd love them too, and she hated it.

Coldupnorth7 · 31/01/2024 09:10

You could try a wool duvet?

He might just be cold and they are a lovely weight and also very thermoregulating.

I had an M & S one and when it passed away, I got a Baavet one as recommended here and it's great. They gave advice on the best weight and it helps Eryri Farmers!

Costco do the nice weighted blanket I have and I use it lying on the floor sometime. It doesn't matter if it is a placebo effect as the problem with not sleeping is getting cross and the key is to relax the body and then the mind follows.

I've just started listening to yoga nidra meditations and that's helpful for me. Just have all the tools as somethings work sometimes...nothing works all the time.

Fetaa · 31/01/2024 09:15

he could also get outside light or use a special SAD light box first thing in the morning for 20 minutes, get a minimum of an hours exercise daily, also daily meditation, audible stories in bed,

Houseplanter · 31/01/2024 09:19

I love mine. I bought a cheap one from Amazon to try but am thinking of buying another.

It's really helped my restless legs.. almost 100% improvement and they used to drive me bonkers

OldTinHat · 31/01/2024 09:52

I love, love mine and struggle to sleep if I'm staying away from home without it. It's so comforting.

ICanSeeMyHouseFromHere · 31/01/2024 09:54

I like being tucked in tight/heavy bedding, but don't find that an offical weighted blanket does anything to help me sleep.

My number one thing is getting into a warm bed, not a cold one (ideally after a sauna, but obviously that's not generally feasible), and making sure I have no caffeine after 5pm.

Audio books lull me to sleep too - although I never actually listen to them for the story, as I fall asleep and have to rewind loads to see where I was.

OhItsOnlyCynthia · 31/01/2024 09:54

We have a very heavy feather duvet in winter, and it's wonderful! I'm thinking of getting a lightweight weighted blanket for warmer months, it really is comforting to have that pressure about your body.

TheChosenTwo · 31/01/2024 09:57

Dd finds hers useful when she’s going through a low spell, but she also has no phone/computer etc before bed as standard.
