Would you put this t-shirt in the wash with whites or coloured items?

I normally keep my white wash as a pure-white wash.I would put something banded like this t-shirt in with pale things that I know are colour-fast like light-coloured towels. But if I don't have a suitable pale load, like today, I'm tempted to stick it in with the whites instead. Would you?

No, I wouldn't wash that with whites, the dark could run, turn things grey. Its nearly all dark, you wouldn't put an entirely black or navy t shirt in a white load would you? Is it new, have you washed it before?

cheeseandketchupsandwich · 29/01/2024 21:50

It's not going to run otherwise the top white bit would be ruined. Whack it in

BitOutOfPractice · 29/01/2024 21:54

No I wouldn’t. And I would secretly curse whoever bought it.

PolitePeep · 29/01/2024 21:55

With the mixed colours wash. And a colour catcher sheet.

Puddingpieplum · 29/01/2024 21:56

It'd have to go in with darks for me, and I wouldn't care if it got ruined cos it's a stupid design. DP is a great fan of a navy jersey with a white collar, he's got about 5 of them the eejit.

Blankscreen · 29/01/2024 22:02

I'm glad it's not just me with these conundrums 😂.

I would leave it in the washing basket until I had a load of pale washing

Mitherations · 29/01/2024 22:04

I would leave it in the washing basket indefinitely and let the person who bought it work it out

Klcak · 29/01/2024 22:04

I would put in on an express 15 minute wash on its own at 30 degrees. it’s only 15 mins, meant for a very small amount of washing so not too wasteful.

I wouldn’t trust it not to ruin the whites and the dark wash would probably ruin the white parts.

Fridaypoolside · 29/01/2024 22:10

The dark colours should be colourfast if they are sewn to something white! Bit of a gamble though OP!

Yup, this is probably what I'll do. 😁

Whites, obviously.

That was my reasoning. But yes, a gamble, and the Mumsnet hive-mind seems divided on the question too, which makes me more cautious.

Wash on its own a couple of times and then in with the whites. You know it won’t bleed as would ruin the top. Other darks could bleed into it though if you put it in a dark wash.

sharptoothlemonshark · 29/01/2024 22:18

Personally, I'd put it in with my sheets

NoKateMoss · 29/01/2024 22:19

Darks because it's better if half a t-shirt comes out bad than a whole load of whites.

icelollycraving · 29/01/2024 22:20

I have a separate wash for items like this and Breton type tops. Definitely not whites. I’d put on a 30 wash with a colour catcher.

flusterbluff · 29/01/2024 22:22

I do a sort of mid toned wash. Pale grey, stripes, khaki, camel that's sort of thing. Not brights like red and yellow. Not dark and not white.

moodymary · 29/01/2024 22:27

Definitely not in with whites
I’d put it with a pale mixed wash - light grey/ light blue etc on a 30 degree wash with a colour catcher
But more likely, it would lurk in the washing basket for weeks and then go in the charity bag.
I’m glad I’m not the only one irrationally annoyed by this!

Mrsjayy · 29/01/2024 22:30

seriously whoever designed that t shirt has clearly never done a load of washing in their life! I would put it in with towels and a colour catcher and hope for the best.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 29/01/2024 22:33

I'd probably keep putting it back in the washing basket until the owner forgot they had it.

If I did wash it I'd probably stick it in with some pale-ish towels or something where it wouldn't matter to much or maybe do it on it's own on a fast wash a couple of times. I used to have a couple of those built in shirt/jumper things in the early 2000s so black jumper with white collar and cuffs and got rid for exactly this reason!

I would do the same.

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 29/01/2024 22:52

The only white wash I ever do is for sheets. Everything else gets separated into lights or darks - and the last time I ever had a colour run was decades ago! My white clothes stay white too, they certainly aren't grey.

However, I wouldn't put that in with whites OP, just in case.

TheFairyCaravan · 29/01/2024 22:56

I do lights and darks. That would go in with the lights, judging by the deer thing on it I think it’s from Next so I doubt it will run. DH has had similar t-shirts and polo shirts and they’ve been fine.

TheHeadOfTheHouse · 29/01/2024 23:02

I do whites, colours and darks.

that would go in colours.

NewYearSameShizzle · 29/01/2024 23:04

These bloody things are my nightmares! I wash them on their own. Inside out. And swear loudly at whoever bought it or curse whichever child asked for it for Christmas/birthday.
