Live Aid 1985 - were you there?

Anybody else around who went to Wembley to Live Aid? I've just been watching something about Queen and their performance. I remember they were unbelievable - nobody else came close. I've not met anybody else who was there.

No, I was working at my Saturday job, I saw a video of it later. The only person I knew who went was my then bosses son - he was a right hooray Henry.

CreateHope · 29/01/2024 21:32

@SheerLucks I was 13 at the time and remember Sun City & Queen - but the idea that no one watched them is total nonsense. Your family might have walked out of the room but they were the talk of school from my recollection 🤷‍♀️.

Me and my friends turned down tickets. 😳😳😳
There's an excellent book called One Day One Decade by Dylan Jones. Highly recommended.

Pretty sure Paul McCartney 'got it'.

I love him deeply, but he did one song. Not even 20 minutes like everyone else.
A lot of people blew it by playing new material. I'm looking at you Bryan Ferry. A Roxy Music set would've gone down a storm.

In fairness that one song (Let it be) had 80,000 people singing in unison and formed an iconic moment.

hotpotagain · 29/01/2024 22:25

I absolutely loved Bryan ferry's set at live aid. In particular Sensation even though it had technical difficulties with mikes and the drummer apparently tore his snare drum head with the first hit. Still brilliant

Sunshine322 · 29/01/2024 22:31

God I wish, I was too young. If I could choose to time travel anywhere, it would be to Wembley stadium to watch live aid, queen especially.

BlackForestCake · 29/01/2024 22:47

Sun City didn't make Queen any friends but it had little adverse effect on them. Radio Ga Ga was one of the biggest hits of 1984 and was number one in 19 countries. They were absolutely not seen as has-beens in 1985.

LittleMissSleepyUK · 29/01/2024 22:52

I was at the Philadelphia one, it was surreal. I was living in America at the time and while I was pleased to be there, I just felt the UK concert had the edge. I never got to see Queen play live with I regret.

Phil Collins playing drums on “Layla” though was incredible. Bryan Adams had the crowd in the palm of his hand. Sadly I missed the Mick Jagger and Tina Turner bit as I nipped to the loo 🙄

BlackForestCake · 29/01/2024 22:57

I do remember Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan were both embarrassingly dreadful.

MissAmbrosia · 29/01/2024 23:07

I was working all day and never saw any of it, even on tv. PT job, split shift. I might have caught the very end.

And his microphone died, so you can’t hear most of his set sadly.
Queen also rehearsed their set thoroughly and luckily do a quick sound check at the beginning

Alicewinn · 29/01/2024 23:13

Never went but I’m unreasonably obsessed with Live Aid, Queen’s performance and this mid 80’s period ! in my memory the Philadelphia show was rubbished compared to ours

Having said that I’m looking forward to watching the doc on Netflix about the American equivalent of their single written by Lionel R and Michael J

I went with my sisters , I honestly can’t remember much about it and I know at the time I went to a Springsteen concert either a week or two before or after and enjoyed that more . We also went to the Queen tour in 1986 at Wembley and that was excellent .

Omg Springsteen in 1985 when he was massive - how effing cool!!

Floralnomad · 30/01/2024 02:04

@Alicewinn we’ve seen him quite a few times and have tickets for Cardiff this year .

Babysharkdoodoodood · 30/01/2024 02:44

I watched it in my London flat with then bf and friends. Earlier in the May I did do the Sport Aid 10k Race against Time through London which was amazing. My bum featured on the News that day 😂

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 30/01/2024 03:05

@Floralnomad very jealous! I saw Bruce in the trailer for that Netflix show the PP was referring to. My god. He’s even more handsome now than when he was younger!

StopStartStop · 30/01/2024 04:55

I wasn't there.
I was at home, watching on television.
I made best use of my time by doing the ironing as I watched.
That was the only time I ever finished all the family ironing. I remember that moment fondly.

MrsCatE · 30/01/2024 05:24

Nope. But I did see Springsteen!!! Favourite concert above the Stones and Who. Re LiveAid, I do remember thinking at time what was the point of Phil Collins getting a helicopter, then Concorde to perform in New York??? Just give the effing money!!! It may have been gratis but still pointless

Purplecatshopaholic · 30/01/2024 06:11

I was too young to go but did watch some of it on tv. I don’t remember any stand out performances - was probably dipping in and out of the room not paying much attention! I remember being impressed someone (Phil Collins?) played in both UK and the States, flying from one to the other - or did I make that up?

Hoglet70 · 30/01/2024 06:30

I remember it being on, I think I was just that bit too young to be interested. I remember my Dad raving about Queen but the bits I remember are more the US stuff in the evening as I was sat down in front of the TV by that time. The weather was far too good that day for me to sit indoors in front of the TV all day!

ArmchairAnarchist2 · 30/01/2024 06:35

DH did, he was 19 at the time. He went to the huge Nelson Mandela one too. I was 13 sat in my DB"s bedroom all day (he was older and had a TV) and I remember it was painted black. I know they were famous before, but I'd never heard of U2 and it was them that blew me away.

tokesqueen · 30/01/2024 06:41

No. But I remember getting up in the early hours to watch Duran Duran perform live in Philadelphia.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 30/01/2024 06:53

No, I was a child but remember watching it on tv. I told a young colleague the other day I went to Life 8 and he thought I meant Live Aid though 😭

Pretty much everything on the day had pretty much 80000 singing in unison. It was that sort of day. When people talk about iconic Live Aid performances it's not McCartney they mention is it?
Don't get me wrong, I love the guy...last time I saw him at the O2 he bought Ringo on for the encore and the place went into meltdown, but I don't think his Live Aid bit stands out particularly. I've always thought that if it wasn't for fucking Mark Chapman the Beatles might have done it.
