I'm very impressed at all these fabulous woman that can do their own DIY. I need to learn more.

How handy are you?

Why wouldn’t women be able to do their own DIY (and why would we be “fabulous” for doing so)? Basic DIY is just another life skill.

Dapbag · 28/01/2024 20:29

I've renovated 7 houses and am just about to start another. All the women in my family do DIY - my aunt did her own wallpapering until she was in her 70s.

If you want to learn more there are evening classes, books galore and videos all over the internet.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 28/01/2024 20:31

I am very good at DIY. I grew up getting involved in a household where DIY took place and my attention to detail is excellent so I get good results.

Justmuddlingalong · 28/01/2024 20:31

YouTube is great for most DIY and decorating things. Some confidence and basic toolbox covers most things. I'll tackle most things except electrical and gas.

None of the women in my family can do any DIY so I think it is fabulous! Sorry if I offended you, it was ment to be a compliment actually.

I can do painting, wallpaper, tiling and wood finishing, learnt from the Collins DIY book and doing up several houses. Both DH and I are from DIY enthusiast families to be fair. There's lots you can do yourself if you take your time and get the right tools.

mynameiscalypso · 28/01/2024 20:34

I'm shit. My DH is equally shit. Actually, I'd saw I'm marginally better at flat pack stuff as he spends an age faffing over the instructions and gets it wrong anyway.

Dearee · 28/01/2024 20:34

I am shit at DIY and because I'm time poor I don't have time to learn. So things either don't get done or we pay someone.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 28/01/2024 20:36

Depends what you mean by good with DIY?
I can paint, sand, poly filler, use a screwdriver, drill, I can hang wallpaper, change a plug, use caulk.

Ripcu2 · 28/01/2024 20:37

I do all the plumbing issues in the house (former plumber, did an apprenticeship before health issues), I can decorate but I find it awfulLy boring and would rather pay someone else to do it, but happy to try my hand at most things as with YouTube/Google it’s easy enough to find the right way to do something.

Festivfrenzy · 28/01/2024 20:38

I love DIY and do all those jobs. My husband is way better at housework and domestic chores than me. I do all the kids stuff, homework, DIY plus my version of the household jobs but very often he'll tut and rehang the washing/make our dinner etc.
Suits us both!

MrsBigTed · 28/01/2024 20:38

I don't have much of a natural flair for it, but if I can find precise instructions (usually youtube) I can follow them. Often takes me long to find the exact instructions than do the task itself.

WandaWonder · 28/01/2024 20:39

Can't say brilliant can't say hopeless, not as good as someone who does it for a living but I get there

Same as men I guess

SunflowerSeeds123 · 28/01/2024 20:40

I can paint a room. That's about it, to my shame.

My dad doesn't do much DIY now because of his age and health, but I used to help him put flatpacks together and put carpet Dow and all sorts. Just never paid enough attention to learn anything.

MuchTooTired · 28/01/2024 20:41

The only diy I won’t attempt is anything gas, electrical or height based. Kitchens/bathrooms/stud walls/plasterboarding/chainsaw garden stuff/laying lino/wallpapering and decorating etc I’ll do happily.

Gilead · 28/01/2024 20:41

Twin dds got power tools for their birthday last year, both are more than competent, will tackle anything other than plumbing and electrics.
im too disabled to do anything in that department anymore, but have been known to build raised beds, put shelves up and sort Oi kitchen cabinets.

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/01/2024 20:41

I can sand, paint and fill - wood and plaster.

I can grout tiles and seal wet areas (baths, sinks etc..).

I can do basic drilling (rehanging cupboard doors etc..) and minor repairs.

I can unblock a drain and bleed radiators.

I leave anything gas, water or electricity related to professionals.

I think anyone can try to do things but some people are just more skilled at it. In this house I am the painter as I can cut in like a pro, I tile but Dh measures and cuts the tiles. I can plumb in bathrooms, Dh does electrics because he is more comfortable with that. We work as a team mostly but play to our strengths. Dh came from a house where his parents didn't do any DIY and hired professionals for everything. Even though I am a 70s child my Dad cooked and my Mum fixed the car.

Youtube is a great resource for learning how to do things, even from the pros. Women are just as capable as men are, no tool requires a penis to operate it Grin

The best advice I can give if you want to try things is you might find a local course for DIY stuff, or practise, so don't tile a wall, tile a sheet of plywood first. Play around with plastic plumbing pipe fittings (Speedfit) before you need to use them.

Tigertoday · 28/01/2024 20:44

I’m good, my mum taught me everything from changing a lightbulb to decorating. I lived on my own from 19 years old and did everything myself for my home.

ArchetypalBusyMum · 28/01/2024 20:46

I am good at stone work, building walls, repointing, repairs of walls.
I'm less good at stud walls cos I rush driving screws so I don't get them consistently straight, not great at boarding out for the same reason. I'm good at roof work, installing velux windows, eaves vents, re-slating etc.
I'm good at laying under floor heating piping.
I don't like electrics, I get frustrated at how slow I have to go cos I have to look it up and work it out.
So mixed picture
I always have to check what I'm doing though as I'm not a professional and it's always a education.

BloodyAdultDC · 28/01/2024 20:46

I'm good at diy.

Also not bad at car mechanic-ing and I can work out my bank statement.

Fortunately you don't need a penis to be able to be good at these life skills.

BouleDeSuif · 28/01/2024 20:48

I can paint, wallpaper and I made all the fences in my allotment.

Same here.

RandomUsernameHere · 28/01/2024 20:50

I can do very basic things well (putting up shelves/mirrors/curtains/hooks etc). I don't get involved in anything more technical than that really, or anything electrical or plumbing related.
