Can you camp in a car?

EggTheFirst · 28/01/2024 18:01

A couple of events this summer involve one night sleep overs/camping. I have no desire to sleep in a tent but wondered if it was possible to sleep comfortably in a car? One adult, large 4x4, is there an off the shelf fix?

Camping mat.

Do the Events have their own rules about car-camping?

Ohwhatthewhatwhatnow · 28/01/2024 18:07

Absolutely. Get yourself some window covers, preferably black out/thermal, amazon and ebay have lots. Camping mat (inflatable mattress would do but not as comfy) don't rely on vehicle for power while engine isn't running (get a torch/battery fairy lights and a powerpack for phone/tablet or whatever) and go have fun!

Well theoretically you could sleep in a car. It's not camping though. It's sleeping in your car. Where would you be anyway...the side of the road? Because I'm pretty sure the police would move you on. Also are you a woman... doesn't sound very safe. It would also probably be freezing even in summer.

Last question...are you impoverished? Because that's the only reason I can see for doing it

Dh uses a self inflating mattress in the back of an estate car (back seats down). Boot open with tarp over in the daytime for cooking if it's raining.

Why does someone need to be impoverished to not want to sleep in a tent?!

devildeepbluesea · 28/01/2024 18:12

I’ve done it. Normal hatchback, just took a duvet and put the drivers seat down as far as it would go. It was fine, I slept quite well!

Because the alternative to not sleeping in a tent is staying in a b&b or a hotel for the night.

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 28/01/2024 18:13

most campsites will not allow sleeping in cars but I think that’s largely about occupancy restrictions. Every festival I’ve been to the car parking area is a distance from the campground area and outside the official entrance. Camper vans usually have their own parking and space inside.

Depends on the weather. But our teenager decided to sleep in the car one camping trip - folded down the back seats so they lay flat, air mattress. We made her have one window notched open a tiny bit for air circulation. She survived, said car sleeping was preferable to sharing a tent with her younger sibling.

I don't think @Comedycook understood the brief! It sounds like an event that encourages camping on site, and the OP doesn't want to sleep in a tent. Perfectly understandable.

Also, OP make sure you understand how to lock your vehicle whilst you're in it if that's a concern. You'll want to work out how to lock up without setting the alarm possibly, otherwise you'll not make many friends if your alarm keeps going off!

Not on site at a festival though.

Chersfrozenface · 28/01/2024 18:32

You can even get tailgate awnings so that you can keep stuff in / use ss a living area. Since the tailgate is open, no problem with air circulation. Obviously they zip ip just like a teny

MrsMoastyToasty · 28/01/2024 18:33

I have a zafira. If I put the middle and back row of seats down I can lie out flat out. It helps that I am short.

Smartiepants79 · 28/01/2024 18:35

There’s loads of videos about this on you tube.
Finding a place to put the car may be your biggest problem.

So have I. Years ago. Luckily the car we had at the time had front and rear seats that folded down flat to make a double bed. I made an awning that draped over the open hatchback to provide shelter for cooking and getting dressed etc.

Back then nobody seemed to care where you stopped because hardly anybody did it.

I’ll be sleeping in my Range Rover at equestrian events, with my horse 🤣

Most people will be sleeping in lorries but I only have a lowly Range Rover.

I thought horses slept standing up. They fart a lot too. Not good in a confined space.

Pipplet · 28/01/2024 18:41

I've done it in a hatchback, when 22, very flexible and able to sleep pretty much anywhere. I really really wished I'd pitched my tent!! So uncomfy. But your vehicle may be better. I suggest lying down in it and testing the comfort. Try the back seat and also the passenger seat tipped right back.

Also you may not be able to have it locked while in it or you'll set off the alarm. Depends on your car.

Edited

They have to lie down for REM sleep for one hour out of 24, but he’s assured me he’ll be fine in an onsite stable with the rest of the competition horses.

How big is the horse? You’ll not get a lot of sleep 💤

WareHole · 28/01/2024 18:42

Can you share/hire a lorry (with living) or do your horses only travel in trailers?

Do you need one for a small lorry (7.5 ton)?

Spidey66 · 28/01/2024 18:48

We slept in the car once. Accident rather than design. We were hoping to stay in a motel on the motorway but hadn't booked, went to 3 and no room in the inn. It wasn't comfortable but we've only got a fiat panda. It was just as well It was before we got a dog as she would have been with us and it would have been worse!
