Can you camp in a car?

A couple of events this summer involve one night sleep overs/camping. I have no desire to sleep in a tent but wondered if it was possible to sleep comfortably in a car? One adult, large 4x4, is there an off the shelf fix?

Many events won't allow it in case of fire, and the 'camper' being trapped as the cat won't open.

I've planned to do this with my dog. I would have an empty boot and put the back seats down for a flat surface. Few pillows and a duvet below and above.

I may get that last post pulled for advertising, but Google ' Tentbox . They go on the roof of your car . I've been on lots of sites where people have the same or similar..I am sure that you could find cheaper ones , but these are really good and come with inflatable mattresses as part of the kit. .

Get yourself an equitrek trailer, either the star treka with full living and loo, night treka with bunk bed and stove, or the new day treka have a tackroom at the front big enough to put a sleep mat/mattress in.

Lizzt2007 · 28/01/2024 20:21

Yes you can op. Range rovers are reasonably spacious! I'm assuming it'll be just you? If so you can buy an inflatable mattress that fits in the back seats to make a bed, and still have your boot and front seats to store tack etc.

What? People sleep in vehicles all the time. There's no difference between sleeping in a rough and ready bed in a car and sleeping in a camper van.

WandaWonder · 28/01/2024 20:36

Yes but I would check it is allowed at your events first

We slept in the car once. Accident rather than design. We were hoping to stay in a motel on the motorway but hadn't booked, went to 3 and no room in the inn. It wasn't comfortable but we've only got a fiat panda. It was just as well It was before we got a dog as she would have been with us and it would have been worse!

We enjoyed a wonderful honeymoon sleeping in a Fiat Panda many years ago. The seats of the original Panda folded flat to make a sleeping platform. Two weeks in December in Spain, Andorra and France. Took skis with us too, and not on a roof rack! Ah those were the days…still together 35 years later😊 (we did have the occasional night in a tent!)

In my 20s I used to sleep in my car rather than a tent quite often, it was vastly superior in my opinion as it had lockable doors, a hard waterproof shell, electric light, dry storage space, and available bursts of radio and heating. I’d blutak newspaper over the back windows and rear windscreen.

I had a Ford Focus and I’d put the back seats flat, then line the boot with pillows with a duvet over them to form a soft bed, and put my actual duvet and pillow on that. One adult plus snacks only though!

You do need to consider locking the car, not running the battery down and ventilation - I used to keep all the windows closed for warmth but open the boot from the inside as soon as I woke up for a bit, for fresh air.

Go on YouTube and search car camping. So much info out there.

Trahlalalala · 28/01/2024 20:49

I've slept several times in the cab of a 3.5 horsebox (yes, I am quite short!), you'll be positively roomy in comparison in a Range Rover with the back seats down. But I'd echo above buying a set of thermal window covers for darkness, warmth and privacy, which I did in the 3.5. Saddles could go on the front seats?

Twoshoesnewshoes · 28/01/2024 20:59

Yes, fine, why not? Maybe invest in a duvalay if you’ll be doing it often, open the window a bit.
the wrap around thermal blackout windscreen covers for campervans should fit no problem.
confused by people saying you need to lock the door- no lock on a tent?!

OneMoreTime23 · 28/01/2024 21:09

We slept in the car as standard as kids. Dad would drive through the night with us sleeping in the boot.

Teslas have a camping setting. I don’t have one but considering sleeping in my SUV at times when London hotels are too expensive for my working days.

waltzingparrot · 28/01/2024 23:06

You can just get a seat gap filler if you're short enough to lie on the back seats. I'd take a double/king duvet to use some underneath you and flap some over you.

Or get one of those pop up tents. Probably easier to put up than trying to fit mosquito nets in the car. Can always retreat to the car if the weather is really foul. Some big plastic boxes in the car to organize things.

SparklyOwls · 28/01/2024 23:23

I think you need to be careful where you do it, can't the police move you on? Also where would you wee/poo?!

Peanutsforthebluetit · 28/01/2024 23:27

I slept for a couple of nights in my estate car for an event.

Mattress in back of car, ready made up with fluffy duvet and pillows.
Some sucker type curtains to windows for privacy.
Camping stove for tea in the morning in case woke up before coffee shop opened.

Thereisnoname · 28/01/2024 23:38

I'd sleep in the trailer and put the expensive gear locked in the car.
I've slept in the back of a horsebox and its fine, just give it a good clean out and get a camp bed so off the floor a bit more if you'd rather than a mattress l.
Plus you'd have more headroom and no windows so no issue of getting dressed.

Trahlalalala · 29/01/2024 08:03

I have heard of people putting a tent up inside their trailer for extra warmth...
