DS12 brought the pestilence home on Wednesday. By Thursday afternoon he was right as rain.

But he’s done a great job of sharing it round! DD15, DD16, DH and I are all down with it. We are all switching between bed and, when the drugs kick in, dragging our sorry arses downstairs to watch The Traitors (no spoilers, it’s all that’s keeping us going at the moment.)

DDog is living her best life as she gets to sleep with me in the spare bed, next to a toasty radiator.

DS12 is in charge of catering. So we can have anything as long as it’s toast. Now and again he chucks a satsuma our way ‘for the vitamins.’

Now and again, when I’m busy and stressed, I secretly wish for a bedworthy minor illness. Be careful what you wish for!

Please share your sorrows….

January has been a load of shite health wise. I've had a parent seriously ill in hospital since pretty much new year and both school age DSs have the plague now. I've had attendance snapping at my heels like a terrier going for the postman but DS2 has simply been too unwell for school, the GP agreed but it was too soon for a sick note. He's substantially better now but his brother is snuggled in the armchair with his duvet feeling sorry for himself now. I know I'm probably next 😫

WinterMorn · 27/01/2024 15:34

Yes! Have been bed/sofa bound for the last 3 days with some horrible flu thing. Coughing, sneezing, terrible aches and serious lethargy.

LaChienneDesFromages · 27/01/2024 15:49

DrCoconut it sounds like you’ve had a really tough time of it fingers crossed for better days ahead.

We’ve also had a bad winter for minor ailments. We’ve had covid, norovirus and now flu within the space of six sorry weeks. We are normally pretty robust.

This is the first year in twenty I’ve not had the flu vaccination. We normally pay for it and the kids get it through school. But I forgot to fill their consent forms and didn’t have time for my own. I’m an idiot!

@@WinterMorn Same here. It’s horrible. Muscle aches, coughing, sneezing, sore throat and head. Also feeling sick with it. Everyone in the house has it and the poor dog needs walked

Our dogs might get a round the block later if I can stuff myself with enough ibuprofen and strepsils…but it’s not looking good right now

LaChienneDesFromages · 27/01/2024 15:54

Our dogs are making us acutely aware of the fact they’ve not been out. Normally Saturday first thing is the big run with their dad.

DDog1 is sitting on his bed with a sock hanging limply from his mouth.

We are almost out of paracetamol. An adult will need to run to the Co-Op at some point.

I came down with something on 6th Jan - really high temperature, extreme fatigue, cough, night sweats... Did a covid test as have some in the cupboard still expecting it to be positive but nope. Had one week when I stayed in bed most of the time then got back to doing school runs and WFH at my actual desk but still feeling exhausted. Was starting to feel a bit better earlier this week then got sneezy/sinus pain. Thursday I realised I couldn't smell anything and yesterday I couldn't taste anything properly. Did another test and bam, positive. For various reasons, I'm pretty sure I had a flu lurgy then COVID back to back rather than it having been COVID all along (surely the test wouldn't be positive 3+ weeks after first symptoms?). So yeah, lucky me!

Exactly the same here. Can’t get warm, but wake in a pool of sweat. Ache everywhere, sore throat and head. It’s grim.

@LaChienneDesFromages the mental image of your pup with his sock 😂😂

I was struck down with it in the middle of the night and feel utterly awful. Why does your joints have to feel like this is a war happening inside them. Anyone who has found medications to help please shout currently alternating ibuprofen and anadin feeling very sorry for myself

Cloud44 · 27/01/2024 16:22

Think I’m coming down with similar, feeling a bit sorry for myself!

I know! I’ve got aches in places I’d completely forgotten about. Now and again a random bit will ache much more than the rest which is just weird.

I’m alternating ibuprofen with Waitrose own cold and flu capsules. I definitely feel better for about an hour, 45 minutes or so after taking them. Luckily, that covers a Traitors episode.

I’m about to venture out of my sick bed to see what’s going on in the house. I think DD15 might be feeling better as she’s just got her Stylophone out! Hopefully, this means she can cook supper and we won’t be subjected to another meal of DS’s ‘toast surprise’ (the surprise being it’s only toast yet again)

Permission to wallow in sorrow for yourself. That indulgence is the best thing about being ill.

We all had this last week. DH brought it home (teacher) then the rest of us followed like dominoes. It was such a rough week and I've still got a beautiful cough even though I'm feeling better now. Hardest was the kids bounced back first and getting them to school etc. when you don't even want to get out of bed sucked!

Hope you all feel better soon OP.

Pascha · 27/01/2024 16:26

Ds13 brought throat lurgi home on Thursday night. Friday morning 5.50am he comes into our bedroom and says he's dizzy with headache so no bundling him. Up for the school bus. He's pretty much fine today but I have a horrendous tickly cough and headache so I know I'm in for it.

Cloud44 · 27/01/2024 16:27

Has anyone tested for covid? I guess it doesn’t really matter what virus it is, there’s so many around this time of year isn’t there

I had covid at the beginning of November. I’ve had it loads of times and it gets milder each time (just a cold now.)
Ironically, I feel too ill for Covid!
There’s loads of flu about at the moment.

Sinus pain
General aches and pains in top of my inflammatory arthritis
I sound like I am holding my nose
Sneezing
Headache
Bad sleep - nightmares and shouting

Did a covid test and it's negative

Just a bog standard virus- a nasty one

Dinoland · 27/01/2024 16:32

Yes! DS had it during the week and I've come down with it today. He's watched back to back films this afternoon as I'm shivering in and out of sleep on the sofa. DH and DD are out. Looking forward to them coming home and taking over.
I'm supposed to be hosting family coming over for a curry. I might take myself to bed and let DH crack on with the hosting. This is crap!

I'd give your family a heads up so they don't need to come if they don't want but either way I'd definitely not be socialising.

RememberToSmile1980 · 27/01/2024 16:38

I have been down with it since Sunday. I'm just getting better now. Still have body aches and the coughing is horrendous!!!!

Eastcoaster · 27/01/2024 16:43

The lack of sleep with it is making me super emotional. I really need a shower and a change of pyjamas but I’ve got no energy. I’ve only had it for a few days but sick of it. Feel for all of you who have had it for longer

Ionacat · 27/01/2024 16:48

I went down with it on 7th January. It’s been awful and has now developed into a chest infection. You know it’s bad when you phone the GP and they call you in for a face to face same day! However antibiotics are starting to work. My appetite has pretty much disappeared - I’ve only really eaten toast and porridge for past three weeks. (I have changed the toast up for the occasion bagel or crumpet.)

I found ibuprofen alternating with cold/flu, copious amounts of honey, lemon and ginger plus also once the meds had kicked in, a warm bath to ease the muscles. I also went back to work too soon - I got to a stage where I felt ‘okay’ sat doing nothing but I went back downhill sharpish as soon as I started doing things which I suspect led to the chest infection. Sending lots of sympathy!
