How do you think people would react if we were being nuked?

sheetsoflux · 27/01/2024 13:42

I would predictably be in a corner scared senseless, to anyone including my DC

I would be googling ways to easily and quickly end my life instead of being fried to death by fire or a building collapsing on me

What do you think you would do? How do you think the public would react if we got told 'a nuclear bomb is heading our way, this is goodbye'. Not even sure who would be manning these radio stations etc to even talk about it so it would be eerie and strange as no radio outlet

I ask because I stumbled across Jim Carey's book and he said in an interview with Graham Norton that was a screenshot of his face when his sister, I think, told him a bomb was coming in Hawaii and this was it.

He said he felt strangely calm. People on Reddit who claim to have been there when they got the warning say all different things

Surprisingly there isn't a collective answer which sort of surprises me. I thought human nature would largely act similarly

I reported it because I found it distasteful, not to mention that the OP already had one thread of this nature going on. You don’t have to like it.

It isn't a case of not liking it. You made your point and I made mine.

WinterMorn · 27/01/2024 15:21

Pliskin · 27/01/2024 15:18

but the ops threads yes are similar but they ask two different points

And I feel this particular one is too much

Quite. So why are you still going?

frozendaisy · 27/01/2024 15:21

There would be crowds fighting over toilet rolls!

which i can understand but then why should we just read the "official" news sources etc ?

WinterMorn · 27/01/2024 15:23

Pliskin · 27/01/2024 15:16

as it is the hot topics in the main stream media etc id say its one of the issues

I can’t see anywhere in the mainstream media that this particular topic is being discussed. I am quite happy to be corrected.

considering the general theme is nuclear weapons, military bases, russia etc id say this forms part of the discussions as a possible consideration in military strategy

Fairyliz · 27/01/2024 15:26

I’d be tackling those five bottles of gin I have in the cupboard; hopefully they would numb any pain.

WinterMorn · 27/01/2024 15:27

But we are not talking about general themes. We are talking about this specific topic, which you said was one of the issues in mainstream media.

and now your splitting hairs over the specifics of the wordings of how i worded my points.

Pippim · 27/01/2024 15:28

I was a teenager in the 70s. We were told by the government we were constantly under threat of nuclear war. Google "protect and survive". It was everywhere, TV, leaflets.

holycrabsticks · 27/01/2024 15:28

I think i'd rob some oromorph from work and down as much as possible then just drift off into a lovely opioid sleep... is that how it works?

It’s not splitting hairs at all.

The one just landed in Suffolk for us to store is 3 times the strength as the bomb that landed in Japan in 1945

OP, could you point me to the article about it “just landing” in Suffolk? Because I’ve read about five or six articles and they all say it’s still in the “reports say” stage that the US will stage any nukes over here at all. And if anyone read the same articles I did, the very same weapons they’re bringing back were already here until 2008. They left, and now, IF it comes to pass, they’ll be coming back. So… they were already here. A lot of faff for weapons that have only been out of the UK for 15 years? BUT I completely accept that I may have missed something, so I’d really like to see what you read. Maybe I’m not concerned, but I should be.

Where I read it:
https://theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/jan/26/us-planning-to-station-nuclear-weapons-in-uk-amid-threat-from-russia-report

This seems a bit like the fear about conscription and “all the higher ups” talking about it. People I’ve seen talking about it in news articles: an outgoing head of the UK Army (no power), a US navy secretary (no power), a retired UK general (no power), and a professor emeritus (so… retired) from the bloody University of Buckingham that the Daily Fail dug up just so they could have another headline about “experts” mentioning conscription. It’s getting a bit silly.

As for what I’d do if I had minutes left and the initial blast was definitely going to kill me… I think I might read Winnie the Pooh. My gran read it to me when I was young. I look forward to seeing her on the other side when the time comes.

if you want to protect the public, from mass panic then shutting down the main stream media would be a better use of your efforts @WinterMorn

Nice diversion, but that’s not the point in hand here is it?

Flapjacker48 · 27/01/2024 15:31

In the actual cold war there were comprehensive plans (ON PAPER) for all aspects of life in the UK during a transition to war and during and after a nuclear exchange.

These plans were mostly useless and relied on wild assumptions about resources.

In reality the Government were well aware that the only real achievable objectives for the UK in the event of a nuclear war were a.) To get our own nuclear missiles on their way to their targets and b.) at best for a tiny number of officials to maybe survive and maintain "continuity of government" and run the UK and control any surviving population afterwards.

Ursulla · 27/01/2024 15:34

Why are people talking about nuclear war now? I thought we all knew that it's not going to happen.

Where would the hot zones likely to be?
London? Faslane? Where else?
My husband works at Faslane

Great now there will be a shortage of toilet roll in Tescos again after this

Major Cities:
Urban areas and major cities would likely be primary targets due to their economic, political, and strategic importance. London, being the capital and the largest city, might face the highest risk. Other major cities like Manchester, Birmingham, and Glasgow could also be targeted.

Military Installations:
Bases, command centers, and military installations would be strategic targets. Places like HMNB Clyde, which hosts the UK's strategic nuclear deterrent, and other military bases could be targeted to cripple the country's defense capabilities.

Industrial and Economic Hubs:
Regions with significant industrial and economic importance might also be targeted. This could include areas with critical infrastructure, manufacturing facilities, and financial centers.
