How do you think people would react if we were being nuked?

sheetsoflux · 27/01/2024 13:42

I would predictably be in a corner scared senseless, to anyone including my DC

I would be googling ways to easily and quickly end my life instead of being fried to death by fire or a building collapsing on me

What do you think you would do? How do you think the public would react if we got told 'a nuclear bomb is heading our way, this is goodbye'. Not even sure who would be manning these radio stations etc to even talk about it so it would be eerie and strange as no radio outlet

I ask because I stumbled across Jim Carey's book and he said in an interview with Graham Norton that was a screenshot of his face when his sister, I think, told him a bomb was coming in Hawaii and this was it.

He said he felt strangely calm. People on Reddit who claim to have been there when they got the warning say all different things

Surprisingly there isn't a collective answer which sort of surprises me. I thought human nature would largely act similarly

@WinterMorn Who made you today's thread police? Like anything on here, if you are not interested or think it's rubbish don't read it.

Nobody. But there should be a degree of responsibility, don’t you think?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 27/01/2024 15:04

I'm not sure I'd top myself. There would be a very small part of me that would think "what if it was all propoganda/they got it wrong/someone changed their mind last minute".

Types of Radiation Emergencies:

Nuclear Power Plant Accidents:
Nuclear power plants utilize radioactive materials for energy production. Accidents, such as core meltdowns or breaches in containment structures, can lead to the release of radioactive substances into the environment. The most well-known example is the Chernobyl disaster in 1986 and the Fukushima Daiichi incident in 2011.

Radiological Dispersal Devices (RDD):
RDDs, also known as "dirty bombs," are devices that combine conventional explosives with radioactive material. While the immediate impact is from the explosion, the dispersal of radioactive material can contaminate the area, causing long-term health risks and environmental damage.

Nuclear Weapons Detonation:
In the unfortunate event of a nuclear war, the detonation of nuclear weapons releases intense radiation, causing immediate destruction and long-term environmental contamination. The impacts extend far beyond the blast zone, affecting regions downwind.

Radiation Therapy Accidents:
Medical facilities use radiation therapy for treating cancer. Accidents, such as equipment malfunctions or human errors, can result in unintended exposure to high levels of radiation, posing risks to both patients and healthcare workers.

There was a village where this happened in the eighties. They had a warning signal which went off by mistake.

Apparently, people were surprisingly calm. Some took their washing in and most people went to the pub.

I think going to the pub is very reasonable under the circumstances. In Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect go to the pub when the Vogons come to destroy planet earth and Arthur was actually in his dressing gown come to think of it, how very British 🙂

That's a bit OTT. Do you get beside yourself reading and hearing all the 'scaremongering' in the mainstream media?

OP did not invent atomic bombs or the nuclear threat (at least I doubt she did!) She is only asking questions to human beings about the world human beings have created for themselves to live in. That's not unreasonable.

It’s not OTT at all, and no, I don’t get “beside myself” when reading the mainstream media. How patronising of you.

in that case section d notices should be used on all the media outlets surrounding world war 3, Nuclear war etc if you want responsibility factor those with the most influence first

The one just landed in Suffolk for us to store is 3 times the strength as the bomb that landed in Japan in 1945

??

All I saw in the press was that they are planning to store one in Suffolk - no updates to say its already there?

sleepysleepytired · 27/01/2024 15:07

I don't think there would be much time to worry. Most of us would be dead quite quickly

candycane222 · 27/01/2024 15:07

Well considering how prepared we were for the pandemic I imagine even if parts of the country were physically unscathed, absolute mayhem would reign, there would be violent fighting over resources and even if there was a functioning power system and internet, you would be unable to believe a single word you read anywhere.

When the pandemic hit my main wish was to be sure my family was safe and bring our adult dcs home. I imagine my reaction to a nuking would be much the same. I would try to survive physically for them, but how long I would survive mentally before being unable to eat or speak, who knows?

what the press say vs intelligence of the operations can be two different things

sleepysleepytired · 27/01/2024 15:08

I think living in London would mean immediate death. I'd prefer that to surviving the after horrors.

The thing is, I am quite clearly talking about the Mumsnet forum…which I suspect you know full well. This is like COVID all over again.

yes but please, you only have to switch on the news or look at facebook etc why should we not debate the issues on here or is it we are only allowed govt approved information via the main stream media etc ?

Shiningout · 27/01/2024 15:12

Horrible thought. I'd probably slip my little one a load of sleeping medication and then myself and just hope we are passed out.

RedToothBrush · 27/01/2024 15:12

I think if we were 'being nuked' I really wouldn't have time to do much thinking about it.

Pliskin · 27/01/2024 15:13

@WinterMorn how can we be part of a Representative democracy if we cannot even debate the issues of the day

I think it's patronising of you to suggest that asking this question on what is widely accepted to be an adult's forum could monger so much fear amongst MNers that we need to be protected from it by having it removed. Isn't that why you reported it?

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 27/01/2024 14:06

If you were in the hot zone then it would be done in a split second. If there was advance warning but not possible to flee to a safe distance then I think I'd feed myself and the family a hearty portion of sleeping tablets and go to bed.

All these people who seem to have a stash of sleeping tablets at their disposal....

Switcher · 27/01/2024 15:14

Cuddle my children and get stuck into a large bottle of spirits asap.

I reported it because I found it distasteful, not to mention that the OP already had one thread of this nature going on. You don’t have to like it.

but the ops threads yes are similar but they ask two different points

LauderSyme · 27/01/2024 15:19

If the world is not actually ramping up towards a big war, the world is certainly talking a lot about ramping up towards a big war. We know nuclear weapons exist and could be used in a big war. So it is a topical issue.

UnfortunateTypo · 27/01/2024 15:20

Back in the 80s we’d have nuclear drills at school about 3 times a year, where we had to hide under 4cms of melamine desk. I’m not doing that!

I’m about 10 miles from Lakenheath, so as Three network are shit and don’t send alerts, I doubt I’d know anything about it.
