Thread 12 - TalkLair: “I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.”

(Previous thread 11).

The days are gradually growing longer, but the worst of the winter weather is not yet behind us. In the TalkLair, we remain hunkered down keeping cosy and warm. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Excellent bread!

artant · 26/03/2024 13:01

That looks good, @duc748

BezMills · 26/03/2024 13:10

10/10 would look at again @duc748

duc748 · 26/03/2024 13:13

Tastes great, definitely Will Make Again.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 26/03/2024 13:26

Bubbly, but not so much everything falls through the holes. Perfect.

VictorianBigot · 26/03/2024 15:21

I didn't see any fish Sad but did watch some of the videos. How sweet!

@SinnerBoy that's really disappointing. Have they proposed an alternative fish recovery system or are they completely disregarding fish welfare now?

@duc748 that looks fantastic!

I wish I hadn't watched the Baltimore bridge video this morning. It's so sad. Those poor people.

Gonners · 26/03/2024 16:10

I'm extremely taken with the presenter of their weekly journal videos (playlist here):

Anyone who's interested in the weather around here might find this video interesting - taken by the nephew of a friend (another British expat who lives a little further north in the state and had a little more snow than us). This guy runs his own business doing grass cutting and landscaping in the summer and snow removal in the winter.

BIGGEST SNOWSTORM OF THE YEAR (day in my life)

Here is the biggest snowstorm of the year! Almost 2 feet of snow came in on March 23rd. Watch our team battle the elements with our heavy equipment! #busines...

Fish doorbell man is great. That amount of snow, not so great - I can see why the power problem took a while to fix.

Gonners · 26/03/2024 19:29

Fish doorbell man also reminded me that whenever I hear Dutch, I feel as though I ought to understand it but am somehow failing.

And yes, that is Too Much Snow!

artant · 26/03/2024 20:55

That is a lot of snow!

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 27/03/2024 15:56

A gift from my Dear One. He found it in a field.

artant · 27/03/2024 16:44

Ooh, intriguing! What was it in life?

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 27/03/2024 16:51

A muntjac, they're common around here. The funny thing is that not only was just the head was present, but I found a muntjac head a few years ago. I'm wondering what happened to the other parts of the bodies.

Britinme · 27/03/2024 18:08

I'm not quite sure how I'd react if I were given that. Part of me thinks it's rather beautiful and artistic, and another part goes ewww.

SqueakyDinosaur · 27/03/2024 18:14

Possibly someone butchered the rest of it? My mum has a 93-year-old, ultra-posh friend, brought up hunting shooting and fishing, who earned the awe of their village by expertly jointing a muntjac that her neighbour's dog had killed. Half for her freezer, half for his. She was very scornful of his kitchen knives - "Blunt as anything, and he's a SURGEON!"

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 27/03/2024 18:40

@Britinme I've picked up quite a few skulls over the years and proudly show them to Mr Veg so he thought I'd like this one and I do, too. The horns will be handy for playing with flint knapping and I really like the algae colour. The skull reminds me of the scary creatures in 'Time Bandits'.

@SqueakyDinosaur that did occur to me and is likely what happened with the first muntjac head I came across. There are a lot of red kites in this area so maybe one of them carried it off after it was butchered. Your mum's friend sounds handy to have around and I agree with her about blunt kitchen knives, they shouldn't be allowed in a civilised household.

MouseMinge · 27/03/2024 18:42

Hello all. I was off the internets yesterday due to a mix up with the bill. Back now. As a result I slept an awful lot yesterday. It was last big chemo - huzzah! Two more radiotherapies to go and then it's recovering from that, one more portable chemo and the wait to see if it all worked.

That is a whole lot of snow! I think it would stop the trains in this country (/s)

Britinme · 27/03/2024 18:46

So near the end of treatment, Mouse! What a relief that will be. Fingers tightly crossed for the best outcome.

Gonners · 27/03/2024 18:59

A Hearty Hooray for approaching the end of your treatment @MouseMinge ! Your local NHS Trust seems to have done you proud, in terms of "just getting on with it", so well done them (and well done you, obviously, for remaining mostly sane).

artant · 27/03/2024 20:09

I’m sure it feels like your treatment has been going on for ages @MouseMinge but it seems like no time since it started. So pleased you’re almost through it and fingers very firmly crossed for three best possible outcome.

SinnerBoy · 28/03/2024 11:57

My wife just called from hospital, she's gone from work, with chest pains. I'm pretty worried, they haven't done an ECG yet.

I'm supposed to be taking my daughter to my parents, train's at 3:30. She's told us to go anyway. I'm really in a quandary, she thinks it could be a pulled muscle, there's lots of heavy work in their bakery.

She said to tell our daughter she's had to work late, she was going to drive us to the station. I'm not sure what to do...

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 28/03/2024 12:02

In your place @SinnerBoy I'd postpone the visit and go to your wife's side. Fingers crossed it's just a pulled muscle, it sounds very worrisome.

DeanElderberry · 28/03/2024 12:16

Would it practical to go see her, taking your daughter, and then if things seem okay go on to the train from the hospital (I have no idea where anything is, obv). If the hospital want to do an ECG it suggests they are at least considering the possibility that it isn't muscular. Or maybe just postpone the trip.

BezMills · 28/03/2024 13:24

Go see her. I hope it's just a strain from work.

I ended up in casualty getting treated as a cardiac patient once, it was a dislocated rib from a drunken mate giving me a bear hug. I was sent home with a flea in my ear and a packet of paracetamol.
