What is in your fireproof box?

Or whatever your equivalent is.

Following on from a poster saying they don't know where their GCSE certificates are, I assume most people have their qualifications somewhere safe?

All my families birth certificates, GCSE, A level and degree certificates and passports are in a fireproof box in my wardrobe. Also my will and some insurance documents. And power of attorney paperwork.

What is in yours?

Er, um, there's a pile of papers in the attic but not sure that's overly fireproof 😬

Adding to my long list of life failures

O

doesn't sound like you could scoop them up if you were running out of the house at a moments notice!

Would be the last thing on my mind tbh

It’s never occurred to me to get a fireproof box. I guess in a pinch you could replace most (all?) of those things though, but it would be a faff. I’m pretty sure I’ve not got my high school qualifications certificates, maybe my parents do. Never needed to produce them.

Why do you need GCSE certificates?? I have never had to produce them only write down my grades. Confused

Paw2024 · 23/01/2024 22:36

Um I think my certificates are in a drawer... somewhere

When someone threw a firework in, I didn't have long to get out and it showed what I treasured TBH
I grabbed the cat and that was it. Was wearing my irreplaceable jewellery

idontlikealdi · 23/01/2024 22:36

Having just gone through MOD clearance I realised I didn't have anything I needed. School records from 1995, nope, NRA, nope, managed to get it through but massive PITA.

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 23/01/2024 22:36

FPB is on the list!

certificate's passports in 'safe places' but not fireproof & not all in the same place.

maudelovesharold · 23/01/2024 22:38

I don’t have a fireproof box. One of many things not on my radar! We have a filing cabinet with important documents like passports and birth certs. in, but I doubt it’s fireproof and I couldn’t tell you where the academic certs. are….somewhere around, I hope. I’m going to be fretting about that now!

Farwell · 23/01/2024 22:38

I don't have one.
Passports, birth certificates etc are all replaceable. My family aren't. If I am stopping long enough to grab anything, it will be them, not paperwork.

maudelovesharold · 23/01/2024 22:42

Isn’t the essence of a fireproof box that you can dash from the house and leave it behind, safe in the knowledge that it will survive the blaze?

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 23/01/2024 22:43

I have a box (plastic and definitely not fireproof) that holds passports, insurances, wills, poa etc. Definitely don't have any school qualification paperwork - not relevant at 52mi don't think. In the event of a fire I would grab dogs and medication (in that order).

tinkerbellvspredator · 23/01/2024 22:43

That's the point of a fireproof box, you don't take it with you, it gets left but protects the contents. I've thought about getting one but never got round to it. Most things are replaceable. An piece of antique jewelry that I inherited is back at my parents house in their fireproof box though!

QueSyrahSyrah · 23/01/2024 22:44

Passports, birth certificates, wedding certificate insurance documents, any important receipts etc are in a metal lock box. Not convinced it's fire proof but it's probably more fire proof than a drawer.

Absolutely no idea where GCSE and A level qualifications are, but haven't been asked to present them at any point ever so not too worried at this point.

I am older than you and still have shown mine quite regularly.

Yes it is. We have one but it weighs a tonne so won't be running anywhere with it 😂

Birth and marriage certificates, my parents birth, marriage and death certificates, deed for the plot where my mum is buried, some old family photographs, inherited jewellery, and our passports.

Our wills.

When our mortgage is finished the deeds will go it in too.

FrangipaniBlue · 23/01/2024 22:56

I think there may also be some cash in it too.

whyamiawakestill · 23/01/2024 23:32

A what? Is this normal? Don't you just run out of your house, get your kids, pets etc?

Everything else is replaceable?

notknowledgeable · 23/01/2024 23:35

I dont think I would worry about the box if the house was on fire no.

Its more of a police knocking on your door and saying you've got 15 minutes to evacuate type grab thing.

But the point of it being fireproof is the documentation would survive in a fire or flood - and yes, things can be replaced, but only if you know where to go. My will for example, - you could only get a copy if you knew which solicitor to ask. POA documents might be needed with little or no notice. And so on.

You have a fireproof box?!?

SisterMichaelsHabit · 23/01/2024 23:37

Screw that. I've lived through a real fire where someone died. The only thing you should be thinking about is getting out alive. There's no time for shite like this in a real fire.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 23/01/2024 23:38

Everything can be replaced except you. Everything.

Enko · 23/01/2024 23:40

Dhs and my qualifications passports. Old passports insurance info pension info and dogs vaccinations microchip info. Our marriage certificates and birth certificates. Oh and a photo of mil and fil cutting their wedding cake
No clue how that ended up in there we have better photos of them even from their wedding but there it is
..

Our kids at age 18 got a fire proof folder of their own to have their info in.

May put a photo of the dog in each of the kids folders 😁

When dd1 moved out and showed her then boyfriend the folder he promptly bought one too stating what a good idea.
