What is in your fireproof box?

Or whatever your equivalent is.

Following on from a poster saying they don't know where their GCSE certificates are, I assume most people have their qualifications somewhere safe?

All my families birth certificates, GCSE, A level and degree certificates and passports are in a fireproof box in my wardrobe. Also my will and some insurance documents. And power of attorney paperwork.

What is in yours?

@Konfetka Out of my friends I don’t know any that did work. One lost a comic
collection worth tens of thousands. Another factor is that all properties here are timber built, not brick.
The other major takeaway is that your contents insurance is probably nowhere near enough.

Also, given how building costs have increased so much over the last few years, your buildings cover may need a review. Some insurance companies will automatically increase your contents cover each year to account for inflation, but you often have to ask to increase the buildings cover.

I am older than you and still have shown mine quite regularly.

I'm 55 and have never been asked for proof of qualifications. Bonkers

My 'fireproof box' is actually a gun safe, and contains two shot guns, my GCSE, A'Level & degree certificates, some jewellery, my dgf's OBE, and my and ds' birth certificates, passports etc.

We've not had a fire so no idea how it would stand up, but I have all the details plus photos recorded online, just in case it is all reduced to a crisp.

My will & POA are with my solicitor, and my dsis

I needed my O level certificates from 1974 for a job about 10 years ago. I'm not sure you can get copies from this far back, though anyone with them this old like me will be drawing their pension now or very near it.

Edited

Yes, you can. All exam boards retain a record and many schools have an examinations officer. I recently had to prove I had GCSE Maths (I'm in my 50's) and it took my school about 10 minutes. I was very impressed 😊

Or there are specialist Qualification Check companies that can track down certificates from defunct institutions or those overseas.

I certainly wouldn't be grabbing GCSE certs! But definitely the cats!

I don't have a fireproof box. I don't have anything inanimate that I care about enough to keep in a box in case of fire. It would all be replaceable.

My friend woke up in the night to find out her flat was on fire. The only thing she managed to save was the cat and the pyjamas she was wearing. Devastating.

Just wills in ours. That's it. The house deeds used to be in there, but it's all online now.

Just to say though, we have all our digital stuff saved on three hard drives, kept in three separate locations (with family). We update them now and then. Maybe I should stick the one we have at home in the fireproof box - never thought of that!
