How to improve my facial scar

Tiredmum1313 · 22/01/2024 21:07

I Had an accident at the end of October. I have been told my new scar looks like a wrinkle which is making me feel worse and down about it considering I used to always do my skin care to prevent fine lines or wrinkles. I'm turning 30 this year and I feel like this scar looks ageing now. I know I can hide it with my hair and headbands but it's making my self esteem suffer. I'm already using silicon gel twice a day and using spf 50. Is there anything else I can use to help this fade to almost invisible if that's possible.

I wouldn’t have even noticed that!

I am not sure about what can help, but it’s still early days for healing. It may just need time in addition to what you are already doing, for it to heal, renew tissue and begin to gently fade.

TheOccupier · 22/01/2024 21:11

I think the person who told you that was trying to be kind. It does not look like a wrinkle, especially not if the rest of your face is young! It looks like a scar, but really not an obvious one - your picture looks very zoomed in so I'm guessing it's about 1 cm really? You are doing all the right things, hang in there and one day you'll realise you've forgotten about it.

Do you at least have a cool story about how you got it?

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 22/01/2024 21:13

I found the silicone sheets better than the gel, I had to have a screw put into my hand so would put the silicone plaster on overnight every night and now just have a very thin well faded scar.

This is one of those things that is really obvious to you but no one else would notice it.

I promise it'll fade even more.

Also gentle massage of the scar with vitamin e oil. And try some light therapy to promote healing too.

Oh good lord, its nothing. You are making a mountain out of a molehill.

canina · 22/01/2024 21:22

I second @FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain
You can wash and re-use the pieces lots of times

Fabricwitch · 22/01/2024 21:22

You could try a dermaroller? I also don't think it looks like a wrinkle, and it's probably not as noticeable as you think!

DappledThings · 22/01/2024 21:33

It's barely visible. Not worth getting het up about.

OctoblocksAssemble · 22/01/2024 21:36

October isn't very long ago, I was told scars take up to 2 years to mature. Keep up with emollient, silicone treatment and the sunscreen, and try not to panic just yet.

emmylousings · 22/01/2024 21:36

Bio-oil, I think if you're prepared to spend time massaging it in, it can help.

Tiredmum1313 · 22/01/2024 21:53

Thanks everyone for your reassurance and suggestions.

@TheOccupier I have cropped as I didn't like seeing my face in the pictures 😂and unfortunately no cool story was it was traumatic though, I think that’s why I keep getting upset over it.

@FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain Oh I’m glad to hear about your hand and how well it. healed. I’m absolutely going to try the sheets next.

I had a cyst removed from my face and my plastic surgeon said two things help - silicone is the only product proven to improve the appearance of scars so it's great you are already on that. Stick with it. The other thing is massage to stop hard scar tissue forming. He said this is why some people think bio oil or whatever helps but it's not the product, it's the act of rubbing it in - you can use any cream or oil.

Alessya · 22/01/2024 22:01

Scars fade for years. Yours looks very fresh still. It may never disappear completely, but it won’t always be that dark pink colour, it will fade to a pale skin tone that will be much harder to see.

As to creams, I believe creme de la mer was created to help with scars but it’s crazy expensive and I don’t know if it works or not. Might be worth a try.

Sorry this happened to you.

suafa · 22/01/2024 22:17

Try not to fixate on your scar.

You know it's there and remember how it happened. This means it's at the fore of your mind.

Those looking at you are likely to ignore it or not even notice it.

By all means moisturise and massage it, but work on your self esteem and accepting that none of us are perfect.

I second what someone else said, it's the act of massage and not the product necessarily that helps. Some years ago I had a nasty bike accident and split my chin wide open, among other things... I had lots of stitches. I was referred to a maxillofacial unit because I'd also broken my jaw and it was there I was told once the scar had healed to spend a few minutes a couple of times a day massaging cream along it to break down the scar tissue - the thick blue nivea creme was what they recommended funnily enough. It really helped and you can barely see it now. Took a couple of years though, if I'm honest

VentBox · 22/01/2024 22:40

Scar magic is a lovely cream. You could also try a professional.

Another vote here for Vitamin E oil.
Just split open a capsule, and massage it into your scar.
It really is extraordinary.

paintitblue · 22/01/2024 23:25

I had a deep crater in the same position as your scar, and used the silicone gel twice daily for almost a year - it entirely vanished. You've only been using it for a few months now. Perhaps the sheets are quicker, but it will improve I'm sure.

Minglemangle007 · 22/01/2024 23:53

I had to have a drainage tube in my neck 18 months ago which left an interesting scar I can tell you! Was advised by the surgeon to use bio oil AFTER 6 weeks, but didn't up using anything as I hated touching it......

18 months on and even I have trouble seeing where it was, you will be fine, but you can always have aa interesting backstory ready to tell people if you want....

Tiredmum1313 · 23/01/2024 00:11

@eurochick thanks for sharing that I didn’t realise massaging helped with the scar, I see your post and see other posts after yours saying the same thing. So it must be good for scarring.

Tiredmum1313 · 23/01/2024 00:14

@Alessya yes I agree it’s the dark pink colour that is making me so aware of the scar, and because it’s so close to my eye I cannot ignore it and thank you that’s kind of you to say so.

Tiredmum1313 · 23/01/2024 00:17

@paintitblue that’s good to hear that you had a scar in the same place as mine and it’s almost vanished, it’s so itchy atm because it’s new and I get worried about sleeping on it. I really need to get the silicone sheets.
