As the title says… I weigh 17 stone, 5”7. I am obese and I know it’s time to change.

I joined the gym last week and I’ve been considering getting a personal trainer for a while. Well I had a taster session today and I honestly think I am too unfit for any personal training right now. The trainer also wasn’t that encouraging either even though I was visibly struggling. They just sort of just told me what to do and watched me.

I feel like I can’t walk now and I don’t know if it’s best I shed a few stone first by going to the gym and eating well before paying more money to tone up.

What are your thoughts? Anyone been in the same position?

Hi all. It has been over a month since I last posted on this thread.

Unfortunately I just keep putting on weight... I am now hitting the scales at 17 stone, 8 pounds which I am ashamed of. My BMI is 39.

I have decided that I need to follow some sort of structure and that I am going to start slimming world next week. If anyone else is on a similar journey or has had success with SW then please do post on here!

Hi, I just wanted to let you know you aren't alone. I'm 5ft6 16st4. I managed to lose a stone before Xmas counting calories but haven't been able to get in the mind set since and am back to square one. I hate the way I look, feel, and eat. But I can't shake it and sort myself out. I'm not good with checking replies on here but just wanted you to know, you're not alone.

Hi Op. Sorry to hear nothing has worked so far. What did you try?

The problem is everything works but you have to actually stick to it. They’re slated in here but loads of people find Weight Watchers and Slimming World work even if the methodology isn’t great nutritionally ( mashed versus whole bananas, ultra processed ready meals etc) .

I’ve found the Fast 800 works well. It’s basically only enough food to keep you healthy. It’s not enough to “enjoy“ as you would normally. It’s a bit like alcohol if you drink too much; it’s easier to give up altogether and not think about it.
Obviously you can’t give up food altogether but this system focuses on how much healthier and better you feel when you aren’t eating.
I know it sounds a bit like anorexia but sadly that’s also people who are obsessed with food, just the opposite way to us fat people. If you have a BMI over 30 it’s helpful to cut carbs, crap and snacks and readjust how you think and feel about eating and hunger versus craving.

I fail at any diet that says “unlimited” whether that be protein, salad or vegetables. I always eat more than I need ,which is the bit I struggle with most I think. Pointless eating.

I have had success with weight watchers & met some lovely people in the process but also know people who have success with slimming world.

Give it a try for a few weeks, if it's not for you you can always stop going

Weight watchers used to do the first 3 months free if you are over a certain BMI - worth checking on their web site if they still do it

OP

I was nearly 20 stone less than a year ago and am now 5 stone lighter

Been to the gym twice in that time

It's calories according to your BMR and a high step count (I started at 8k a day and am now up to 12k)

I've had years of yo yo dieting to no avail, on every possible plan - this is the only one that works and it has stuck

Would you try a taster with a different PT could this be an option; see how you get on?

I’d say start with the basics and don’t worry about a personal trainer just now. Clean eating - no processed food. Fish / meat / veg / whole grain carbs. Drink water. No fizzy drinks, juices, junk foods, cakes, biscuits, crisps etc. And move more…. Go out for a walk every day. Start with 10-15 minutes at a strolling pace and then build up distance and speed. Are there any activities you enjoy? Cycling…. Gardening… team sports… walking in new places?
