My husband has taken baby daughter to A&E

She's five months old.

Has a small patch of pinprick bruises / non-blanching rash on her leg. Noticed it when I was dressing her after her bath.

Otherwise seems well in herself, no temperature etc.

Can someone tell me we have done the right thing and that I'm not being silly? Feel so worried. Please no scary stories. She's not our first and we've dealt with non-blanching rashes before. The fear never really goes away.

I'm waiting at home with the three older ones. Can I please have a handhold?

You did the right thing, I hope she is ok.

Cwtshcwtsh · 21/01/2024 22:00

Oh and when he was 4, I took DS to our GP for a minor rash on his foot which I thought was from getting sweaty in fur-lined wellies and she referred us to the hospital for suspected Kawasaki syndrome. I don’t know how I held it together but it was indeed sweaty feet in the end.

Hoping everything is ok.

Bless you. This is exactly what I needed to hear, thank you. I presume/hope all was well with your DS?

He was fine, thank you. Just gave me a few more grey hairs!

purpleelephant28 · 21/01/2024 22:05

My daughter had this at 7 months (albeit with a raging temperature). I remember other people (OH, father in law etc) telling me not to bother, it didn't look like much. Glad I didn't listen and got her seen - when the GP saw it we were sent straight to hospital - she had to stay and have 5 days of IV antibiotics. She was absolutely fine in the end, never quite sure what it was, but definitely glad I got it checked out!

Gosh, how terrifying. Well done for trusting your instincts. I'm glad she is ok. x

I'm sure you all know but just in case. If you are concerned about meningitis don't delay getting checked even if they don't have all the symptoms. One local child died at nine as he was negative for one of them so he wasn't sent to hospital.

NicholJO · 21/01/2024 22:09

Op million percent done the right thing. I have had 7 children and I was a single mother with no one to care for the other children if I needed to go A&E I took all my little buggers please don't worry to much I have had this with my children everything was OK just some viral infection or something rubbing on there skin that didn't agree with them

Danielle9891 · 21/01/2024 22:10

You've definitely done the right thing, its always best to get these things checked out. You'd never forgive yourself if it was serious and you did go to a&e.

spidermonkeys · 21/01/2024 22:13

Hand hold.

The fact you have been given a 3 hour wait sounds positive. If they triage nurse suspected something awful, they would have got you straight in.

Hope all is ok. Always best to get these things checked out

Echobelly · 21/01/2024 22:14

Totally fine to do that - as she seems fine all other ways I expect it'll all be perfectly OK, but worth checking out.

Our teenager had an uncharacteristic persistent headache during their first week of mocks last month and then woke up with a rash on one side of their forehead so we went straight to A&E as obviously we were worried about meningitis - turned out to be shingles which was potentially unpleasant (luckily it turned out to be a very mild bout) but not dangerous.

catherinewales · 21/01/2024 22:18

Just wanting to handhold. Hope your DD is ok xx

loadedchips · 21/01/2024 22:21

Hope all is well

dontforgetme · 21/01/2024 22:32

Hope all is well op, thinking of you.

Dancerprancer19 · 21/01/2024 22:36

Just to same mine had to have a spinal tap at 5 weeks to rule out meningitis. It is terrifying. It turned out to be RSV (which still made him very poorly) but he got the right medical care for the next week in hospital and is now a thriving 8 year old. You've 100% done the right thing.

MargaretThursday · 21/01/2024 22:45

Ds used to have those quite regularly and the go always sent him to a&e so you have done the right thing.

The reassuring thing is that it was a vital rash with him. The doctors told me that if he was alright in himself (which he normally was) then it's very unlikely to be meningitis because the rash is a later sign normally do he would have been clearly very ill by that point.

But you still are doing the right thing taking her in, which is what the doctors also said. It's not worth the risk of it is anything bigger.

Bobbob2015 · 21/01/2024 23:14

You’ve absolutely done the right thing it’s always better to get little ones checked out. If she’s well in herself that’s good. I think in meningitis the rash is usually one of the last things to appear which is reassuring. My daughter gets this occasionally and we’ve ended up in A and E a couple of times despite my gut telling me she was fine. Both times she was ok but I’d never have forgiven myself for not taking her in. I hope they don’t have too long a wait and all is well. My daughter seems to get this from friction on her skin such as removing a wet swim suit.

thefunnybones · 21/01/2024 23:15

Good luck op

Fullofxmascbeer · 21/01/2024 23:23

Better safe than sorry.

Callimanco · 21/01/2024 23:35

Could possibly be ITP if it's anything. This is a temporary reduction in platelets. If she is not unwell in herself it's vanishingly unlikely to be meningitis, but could be ITP.

Callimanco · 21/01/2024 23:39

Esp since the rash is on her leg. My child had this (ITP) and the rash often appears on legs. My child had black blood spots Inside their mouth, too. But felt fine.

Pieceofpurplesky · 21/01/2024 23:41

Hope they get seen soon OP

Epwell · 21/01/2024 23:43

Oh gosh absolutely agree that it was the right decision to go! My DD had a non-blanching rash all over when she was about 1. My DH was on a night out (his first since DD was born). I called him in a hysterical state to get him to come home asap, drove to the hospital (on two wheels going round corners) rushed in to A&E and tried to queue jump. I seem to remember that I also delivered a rather pompous lecture on meningitis rashes and the risks of not taking them seriously. (Not my finest hour....)We were triaged by a lovely nurse who soon realised there wasn't much wrong and pointed out that children with meningitis tend to be really quite ill, which DD clearly was not, but I was in a complete panic and of course I wanted to see a doctor, so we waited in the waiting room. By the time my DH arrived to join us, DD was toddling round offering everyone half eaten raisins and assorted other semi-chewed snacks and trying to engage them in conversation. She had an absolutely fabulous time. My DH was somewhat unimpressed by the curtailment of his night out at this point..... We eventually saw the doctor - they thought it might be viral - we had a follow up appointment to check her out a day or two later and everyone was absolutely lovely and we were reassured at each stage and be everyone we saw that they would rather have seen DD than not.

BobbyBiscuits · 21/01/2024 23:49

You have done the right thing. It could be a bite, or an allergy to something, to food or self care products? The doctors will help whatever it is. Try not to worry xx

Whiskeypowers · 22/01/2024 00:00

you have absolutely done the right thing. Hope your baby daughter is fine and home for snuggles soon.
