My husband has taken baby daughter to A&E

She's five months old.

Has a small patch of pinprick bruises / non-blanching rash on her leg. Noticed it when I was dressing her after her bath.

Otherwise seems well in herself, no temperature etc.

Can someone tell me we have done the right thing and that I'm not being silly? Feel so worried. Please no scary stories. She's not our first and we've dealt with non-blanching rashes before. The fear never really goes away.

I'm waiting at home with the three older ones. Can I please have a handhold?

Better safe than sorry xxx

Housefullofcatsandkids · 21/01/2024 21:17

Definitely better to get it checked out. Hope she gets seen soon and everything is ok.

whiteboardking · 21/01/2024 21:18

At 5 months always get stuff checked

You're doing the right thing xxx

WorriedMillie · 21/01/2024 21:20

Hugs, OP. If she’s otherwise well, that’s incredibly reassuring, but it’s good to get her checked out. They never mind assessing babies ❤️

NamechangedH · 21/01/2024 21:21

DS had this at about 8 months, I thought I was being so OTT when I took him in. He was fine but they kept us in overnight just in case , always better to be safe than sorry

Sapphire387 · 21/01/2024 21:22

She's been triaged, her obs are ok. They are suggesting up to a three hour wait time.

My friend's DC got a rash which went away after a few days but then resulted in glomerulonrphritis (basically kidney damage) which is ongoing. Apparently if he'd been diagnosed by a doctor at the time some antibiotics would have sorted him out. Even if it's not an emergency, it's always worth getting checked out. Hope your little one is found to be perfectly fine.

Inyourwildestdreams · 21/01/2024 21:24

@Sapphire387 Never doubt yourself in these situations. Not getting it checked and it being something that you should have had checked is an unthinkable situation for any parent.

Hopefully she’ll get seen quickly in A&E and it be an harmless rash and you’ll have her back home with you soon. They’re usually good at getting the little ones dealt with quickly 🤞🏼

BirthdayRainbow · 21/01/2024 21:25

You've done the right thing and I really hope she is okay and home very soon.

NewYearNewCalendar · 21/01/2024 21:25

Mine have had non blanching rashes a few times, always scary but always turned out to be nothing. If her obs are ok and no other symptoms then that’s really good, but also absolutely the right thing to take her in.

PBandJ111 · 21/01/2024 21:25

Definitely better to get checked than not.

Tuturkeykey · 21/01/2024 21:26

DS had a non blanching rash at the same age, it turned out to be viral and he got better really quickly. It will be fine OP - her obs are clearly fine so it’s nothing serious. Xx

Thank you. That's the thing isn't it? We've always been told to get a non-blanching rash checked ASAP. I would never forgive myself if we didn't and she was actually very ill.

Thank you so much to you all for your lovely messages. It's really helping.

Husband is sitting with her with her nappy off trying to get a urine sample. Always a fun task.

That’s the hardest thing getting a urine sample.

Better safe than sorry.c

Welcome2thecircus · 21/01/2024 21:34

We've taken our tiny into A&E recently for umbilical hernia issues vomiting. Unfortunately we had to wait a long time 5+ hours but always better to be safe.

You may already know but due to their age you can ask for a baby room, if there are any available. It keeps them away from all the other bugs, and they might get some sleep in a cot while you wait.

Also urgent care centres are very good, we've found them quicker than A&E but depends on the issue.

Hope baby is okay

DreamTheMoors · 21/01/2024 21:35

FoodieToo · 21/01/2024 20:53

I had 5 babies and these kind of things used to pop up for no discernible reason . Their skin is so pale and almost transluscent that any little issue is more apparent . Could almost guarantee it's nothing .

FIVE BABIES???

Well done! I have a friend who had 6 and she fell apart. Couldn’t handle any. By the time the oldest was 15, they moved out and rented a flat on their own. It broke my heart for them.
Now they’re almost 40, they have kids of their own, great jobs & marriages & beautiful homes.
But their mum is still a mess.
I love her though. She just was never equipped to have children - but I’m happy she did because those kids are a gift.
i love to hear about responsible mums. You might not think a second thing about it but you stand out to me. 💐

chocopop123 · 21/01/2024 21:38

My son had this as a toddler. It was on one foot. Went to gp who sent us to a&e so a bit scary, especially as hospital wanted to test for meningitis. But it was a viral reaction, as others have said.

Unbloched · 21/01/2024 21:46

Definitely the right thing to do, 5 months is still so little and as you say the advice is to get a non blanching rash checked out. Intuition also plays a part, best to regret going because its thankfully nothing than to regret not if it is something. Hoping all is well and that the wait goes quickly.

Sapphire387 · 21/01/2024 21:51

They've managed the urine sample, at least that's something!

Ohdojustfuckoff · 21/01/2024 21:53

I'm sure I read somewhere the non blanching rash tends to be the last symptom of meningitis.
It's usually after the crying and generally unwell little one.
You're right to get her checked out, but hopefully that's a little peace of mind to tide you over until she's been checked out.

It's so horrible when these rashes come up, like many PP on this thread, I have a child who gets this type of rash whenever he's got a virus...doesn't matter how many times it's been checked, the next time it comes up, it's always as scary as if it was the first time.

It's awful isn't it? Eldest developed a non-blanching rash during scarlet fever when he was 4. I called our GP surgery who have always been marvellous, bless them. I actually got transferred straight to a doctor from calling reception and she said take him to A&E, if you can't then I will call you an ambulance. Fucking terrifying. He was fine but they gave him precautionary IV antibiotics while waiting for test results.

If she’s well in herself she’s almost definitely fine but you’ve done the right thing to get her checked

Cwtshcwtsh · 21/01/2024 21:57

I once called 111 because DS aged 11 months was worryingly unwell (temp and rash) but I didn’t want to “waste people’s time” at A&E. For various reasons they sent an ambulance on blue lights and took him in straight away. Since then I have always phoned or gone in about everything, whether GP, 111 or A&E and whoever I’ve spoken to has without fail said they’d rather see a well child than not see an ill one and that they never mind assessing a child. They’re little and precious and vulnerable, especially at 5 months. You’ve very much done the right thing. Please come back with an update, I’m sure everything will be fine but handhold as the waiting is unbearable.

Bless you. This is exactly what I needed to hear, thank you. I presume/hope all was well with your DS?
