If not, let's start one. This is a safe space for us. Hopefully.

OP posts:
BoobyDazzler · 22/01/2024 06:40

Oh god, I cooked the dinner yesterday but I also fixed my car.

I am so conflicted! What even am I?

MinnieMountain · 22/01/2024 06:44

I’m wearing men’s pyjamas right now. I’ll put on a dress when I get up. Also conflicted.

Brefugee · 22/01/2024 06:45

I did all the ironing then went to a football match and drank beer.

I'm confused

AndThatWasNY · 22/01/2024 07:01

I play football AND eat yorkie bars. But also wear mascara. I'm scared.

coldbrightmorning · 22/01/2024 07:16

How was the Queen ‘gender non conforming

I presumed this meant she became Head of State, when that’s meant to be a man’s job

GreyCarpet · 22/01/2024 07:21

OK, I'm going to respond to this seriously (having deleted my previous response).

Stereotypes seem to be very important to you given that you allude to both gender and class stereotypes.

You're going to need to explain which stereotypes you feel you have rejected/accepted and why you feel you need a 'safe space' and from whom.

IME, the majority of people don't conform to strict gender norms and an adherence to class stereotypes usually points more to insecurity and worrying about what others will think of you if you don't.

Most people just do what they want; spend their time how they want and are interested in what they like. In the olden days, this just used to be called 'individual differences'.

In reality, most people have interests, behave and do things that fall across any class or gender divide.

So what is causing the issue for you?

YireosDodeAver · 22/01/2024 07:24

I think a good 90% of mumsnet is Gender Nonconforming. A lot of us don't even have a gender. I suspect there are enclaves of gender conformity in the style and beauty sectiom perhaps.

Pretty much all the women I know in real life are gender nonconforming too. Possibly my pilates instructor might be an exception.

I don't think we need a subsection no. That would suggest that everywhere else wasn't for (or at least doesn't prioritise) gender non conforming .

Gender conformity isn't something many intelligent women encourage. Obviously many women exist who are in favour of it but they tend to be put off from mumsnet by all the swearing, and go to Nethuns instead.

FridayNightSupper · 22/01/2024 07:27

I don’t think I’ve ever met a gender conforming woman.

Scratch that, I did once.

But he was six foot and had a beard.

I don't eat Yorkie bars. Not since they asserted that they're "not for girls".

I don't eat yorkie bars because they are made by Nestlé whose business practices lead to baby deaths. I don't care what their marketing says about how gender-conforming or not it might be to eat one.

Good point!

I just thought it was such an aggressive marketing campaign when I was in my teens.

And if they didn't want my money - they weren't going to have it! 😉

Worriedsick78 · 22/01/2024 07:35

I think there are definite differences in the sexes. If we were to measure certain traits... we'd find more men/women at one end. Aggressiveness, attitudes to sex, physical strength, stress... whatever. And there'd be a massive overlap. More men commit sexual crimes. Some women do. More women work in caregiving roles. Some men do. It's no good saying there are no differences. But I reckon they can be explained biologically and not through gender or feelings. You're either a man or a woman... with a personality.

TheMarzipanDildo · 22/01/2024 07:36

UltimateQuattro · 21/01/2024 21:43

Imagine being a pretty lady from a nice middle class background, but you behave like a typical working class male. Not on, innit

Well I’d think class tourist but I doubt I’d even notice the typical man thing.

Most of that can, as you say, be explained by biological differences though (eg physical strength) though. Not stereotypes or 'gender norms'.

Tontostitis · 22/01/2024 07:42

I wish I had a gender to conform to I feel I'm missing out

MagpiePi · 22/01/2024 07:45

Going back to the original post - what would be on a ‘safe’ thread for gender non-conformers?

“I drank pints of Guinness while watching the rugby today, but yesterday I baked fairy cakes while wearing a skirt, but on Friday I bought a new bra but I wasn’t wearing any make up. I’m sooo gender non-conforming and nobody understands me”

Is that the kind of thing ?

(this is a chatGPT thread isn’t it?)

RumNotRun · 22/01/2024 07:56

MarshaMarshaMarshmellow · 21/01/2024 20:42

Sorry, sidebar: you dig up bodies?!

I was with you for most of the other stuff 😂

It's not the person digging up the bodies you need to be concerned about, it's the one who is burying them 😯

I did archaeology at uni, did some digs, ended up working in the CS. Oh no, I do admin, that's not very GNC of me. Shit, um...oh I haven't shaved my legs for a long time, can I join the safe space now?

ReadtheReviews · 22/01/2024 08:08

Pretty lady (nice hair and clothes), middle class background (won't let people wear shoes on her carpets) acts like working class (rides bike up hill to the bread factory) bloke (burps while swilling beer).
Are those the stereotypes you mean? That would be quite uneventful.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 22/01/2024 08:13

I have short hair, enjoy watching football and like a pint
Am I actually a man?
DH loves going to the theatre and reading and prefers wine to beer
is he actually a woman?
im confused am I actually the DH And he's the DW?
Am I doing womanig wrong?

Toseland · 22/01/2024 08:59

Poor kids today growing up with all this nonsense and being taught it in school too.

ladykale · 22/01/2024 09:02

WinterMarchesOn · 21/01/2024 20:38

I wear trousers, dig up bodies, build Lego, do all the DIY at home, love cooking, sew some of my own clothes, and wear makeup half the time. I act like a woman because I am one, and it’s the only way I know how to be. I reject all sex stereotypes because they are regressive and disadvantage women disproportionately.

Am I gender non-conforming? And why would anyone judge me for how I am, and for what?

WTF.

The problem is people have bizarre idea of gender stereotypes in the first place.

None of these things are strange for a woman to do...

LooksLikeIPickedTheWrongWeekToQuitDrinking · 22/01/2024 09:08

To claim to be gender non-comfirming is to give credence and concreteness to the sexist, reductive gender stereotypes you apparently eschew in the first place.

You don't need a safe space when it's your own ridiculous beliefs that you are trying to escape from.

That was exactly my point. I was challenging the OP to define terms. Like all the other posts. Why has what I said made you say WTF? You seem to be agreeing with me.

This sums it up perfectly.
