How much would you pay for a croissant?

ifIwerenotanandroid · 21/01/2024 18:54

Just a single croissant, no butter, no filling. From a terribly naice shop, to take away.

I was stunned by the price. I promise to come back & reveal it, but I'd like to know what others think is reasonable - maybe I'm out of touch.

£2. I’d maybe push to £2.25, if I was daaaan Saaaath. But much more than that and I’d want something more special.

EDIT: I posted before checking your other posts and WOAH! I was surprised by £3…but a fiver in Hampstead?! I’d want it to be activated charcoal with an artisan almond paste running through it too 🤣

Sainsbury’s chocolate & hazelnut croissants are delicious and not much more than £1 each! I walked out of a Cafe Nero in shock at their price for a croissant the other day and found solace in Sainsbury’s. I heard most croissants in U.K. cafes get shipped in frozen from France anyway so they’re all pretty much the same. Unless you’re going for the artisanal sourdough croissants of course…

crostini · 21/01/2024 19:42

I live in Europe so they're cheap and delicious 🥳 would absolutely never pay £3!!!

helpfulperson · 21/01/2024 19:45

There is a definite price v quality balance here. Lidl croissants are less than £1. Now they are not the nicest croissants available but in terms of value for money they are amazing and knowing that is my fall back position I would never pay more than £2 even in anticipation for an amazing one.

Nero offers so many discounts. I went there with friends the other day and we all had 25% off from different places. I think they overcharge because the vast majority of people have some sort of discount.

I can't bring myself to buy croissants out. A good croissant is beautiful but they're so often dry. I wouldn't mind paying £3/4/5 if I knew it was going to be good but I can't really try before I buy 🤣

I'm out of touch, then. The answer is £3 each.

Im more out of touch, i thought £1

GintyMcGinty · 21/01/2024 19:59

Not more than £3. And I grudge £3.

LakeTiticaca · 21/01/2024 20:00

Last time I was in Greggs they were about a quid I think. Yummy when just out of the oven

I think that's what places charge but it doesn't make them any better than the Lidl ones which cost about 50p or something.

Mytholmroyd · 21/01/2024 20:12

I get them mail order from here with some fab bread and they are 4.40 for 2 big ones:

mrskimsneakattack · 21/01/2024 20:20

I was in Bath yesterday and they were 4.50 in one cafe!

emsyj37 · 21/01/2024 20:20

Once upon a time in London in 2008, I was charged £2.95 by a coffee shop for a single almond croissant to take away. I am still annoyed with myself that I paid it.

VampireWeekday · 21/01/2024 20:37

Pastries are my biggest vice and I'd eat everyday for breakfast but I've been priced out of them. The local nice cafe charges £4.50 for a croissant with jam or a pan au chocolate, I'm shamed to say I buy one a week (and get my fix from lidl or Sainsbury's the rest of the time!)

kitsuneghost · 21/01/2024 20:38

I would have said £4.50

HalloumiGeller · 21/01/2024 20:44

£3 is not alot for a fresh handmade pastry in a little bakery!

I don't.

as a Mumsnetter, the only thing I live on is massive salads

pizzaHeart · 21/01/2024 21:04

I would say £2.50 for a plain one at the independent place, maybe £3 but I would expect it to be nice and flaky not stale and dry.
I would pay up to 3.50 for an almond ones. I did pay 4 for the very complicated almond one a few weeks ago, it was very big but tbh it wasn’t nice- dry and too complicated.
£3 won’t surprise me but I won’t pay unless I’m really have to e.g I’m in the middle of no where, very hungry and there is nothing else left.

NotMeNoNo · 21/01/2024 21:08

Lidls croissants are made in an industrial bakery and frozen then browned off in the store, same with any other instore bakery croissants. That's not the same as a craft bakery (either onsite or delivering) who make them traditionally. Also it's obvious a croissant from a cafe (where you also pay for service and a place to sit) will cost more han a supermarket one.

Ginmonkeyagain · 21/01/2024 21:14

At the risk of sounding like a massive twat (ok ok yes I do sound like a massive twat), I only eat croissants when I am in France. Nicer and cheaper.

In Perpignan last summer there was a great bakery near our hotel where you could get a freshly baked croissant, jam, a small cafe au lait and a glass of fresh orange juice for €6.

samthebordercollie · 21/01/2024 21:16

0,90€ from my boulangerie

winegums88 · 21/01/2024 21:22

If you've ever tried making them by hand you'll probably see why they are £3! It's tons of work but they are definitely nicer than than cheap frozen ones.

It's quite fun making them though, if you ever are at a loose end for three days.

my salads are made of cookies. there is no rule against cookie salads😏

BabaBarrio · 21/01/2024 21:26

I usually get 4 for $1 here.

IthinkIamAnAlien · 21/01/2024 21:33

In sought after Stroud - yuck - £3.50 is the norm. Waitrose ones are not bad, I pay £1.50 max but usually I wait until I'm in France where you can get the unmatchable real thing.

ThePoshUns · 21/01/2024 21:33

£2
