Do you regularly clean your/your DC’s shoes?

I remember doing this from time to time when I was a kid but literally never do it now unless there’s dog poo or some sort of muddy catastrophe.

But today I noticed everyone’s shoes were looking sort of grubby so I might roll up my sleeves…

Do you do it? How often? Suddenly curious about this 😂

Yes, mostly if they look grubby. We don’t wear shoes in the house - DD’s can get rotten though so almost every time she goes out.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 21/01/2024 17:30

Every Sunday night when ds was at school. I have a black pair of boots I occasionally wear for work so do them every September! The rest of my boots are animal print so not them. Oh and if I’ve got an interview.

HuntingForChicken · 21/01/2024 17:30

The only thing I wash is trainers and I rinse the mud off in the sink and then chuck them on the washing machine. That’s only because my dc seem to have super smelly foot sweat.
My dds school shoes still look like new but my ds’s look awful quite quickly. He pulls them on and off without untying and plays football at lunch so I don’t think cleaning them would make much difference.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 21/01/2024 17:31

Nah. Hardly ever unless they get mud on. What's the point, they're just going to lose their shine in a couple of days again.

AnnoyingMildew · 21/01/2024 17:32

I do DD(7)'Ss school shoes every Sunday.

I give my shoes a quick buff if they're looking dusty. But I don't scuff my toes like DD does, so they need much less polishing.

So you don't wash your clothes either I suppose?

Really surprised by some of the responses. Why on earth would you not clean your shoes?

TomeTome · 21/01/2024 17:34

Sunday evening’s

CurlyhairedAssassin · 21/01/2024 17:34

I don't wash my car either. It's silver and never looks dirty, only if we have some of that Saharan sand stuff get deposited on it, and then I just use the windscreen wipers so the windscreen is clean, and the next time it rains it can wash off the dust. I'm very low-maintenance. 😆

Dacadactyl · 21/01/2024 17:35

Yes I do. Usually every half term but if they're muddy or even looked more scuffed than I like it's more often. My dad was religious about clean and shined shoes so it's been passed on from him.

Thehamsterthatcametotea · 21/01/2024 17:35

Once a week although no Dc at home now so just mine.

They're never particularly dirty as I drive to work. They're just not highly shiny and polished. I just don't care about that really unless I'm going to an interview or a social occasion where I have to look more groomed.

I don't wear dirty clothes, there's no comparison with that and having shoes that might need a polish.

frazzled101 · 21/01/2024 17:37

Yes, but with a baby wipe, so don't know if that counts?!

Minikievs · 21/01/2024 17:38

Nope, never.
I do wash their trainers in the machine if they look particularly grubby. But otherwise, no.
My dad sometimes randomly polishes my daughters shoes after he's picked her up from school though.
DS wears trainers gif school, so no.

Caspianberg · 21/01/2024 17:38

A few times a year. At the end of winter I deep clean all our snow, winter, hiking boots as the grit and salt from winter time where we live would ruin them if just stored for 6+ months.

horseymum · 21/01/2024 17:38

Yes, it's very satisfying and makes them last longer. Not weekly though.

I think you're possibly not considering the type of usage that some footwear gets. I clean muddy trainers. Sometimes put them in the washing machine. I even put my slippers in the washing machine every so often as I wear them when I'm cooking so they often get splashes of sauce on etc. Our walking boots get a GOOD clean. DH takes them in the garden and scrubs and hoses them, inner soles out and hanging on the line etc etc.

Day to day footwear that I wear for work (driving to work) and then mainly on carpets inside, they really don't get that dirty. So no, they're not GLEAMING, but they're not dirty either.

FalconryDays · 21/01/2024 17:52

For years I polished my 2 kids shoes and DH’s weekly. I like polishing shoes. I used to do my flat mates before I got married and had kids. Kids are young adults now and DH gearing up to retire (works from home a lot) so I only do it every few weeks. I have all the kit and like to see shoes shiny! I don’t know anyone else who did/does this. I am not a clean freak, slovenly in other areas.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 21/01/2024 17:54

All the bloody time. Football boots and trainers constantly covered in mud 🥴

Allthecatseverywhereallatonce · 21/01/2024 18:20

I do It is more to encourage pride in their appearance. I think it is really important and says a lot about you.

Ragwort · 21/01/2024 18:23

No ... but DH did (when DS was younger and wore smart school shoes) and always polishes his own shoes .. he has a very comprehensive shoe cleaning kit.

catelynjane · 21/01/2024 18:25

No. I'll bash mud off them after work (dog walker) and dry them out properly if they're soaking but otherwise I don't bother, they get filthy again within two minutes of me leaving the house.

My non-work shoes don't really get mucky.

Bramshott · 21/01/2024 18:27

DH did school shoes every Sunday when the kids were at school and we found it really extended the life of the shoes.

TheFormidableMrsC · 21/01/2024 19:39

I regularly clean my shoes but I wear a lot of leather trainers and like them to look nice! Son's school shoes once a week or more if muddy. I think it's important to take care of them.

Highwaypatrol · 21/01/2024 19:40

My dad worked in the city so we did ours when he did his on a regular basis.

Cheeesus · 21/01/2024 19:43

I get the mud off them if they’re muddy. I polish them once a year for back to school after summer if they don’t need new shoes.
