Do you regularly clean your/your DC’s shoes?

I remember doing this from time to time when I was a kid but literally never do it now unless there’s dog poo or some sort of muddy catastrophe.

But today I noticed everyone’s shoes were looking sort of grubby so I might roll up my sleeves…

Do you do it? How often? Suddenly curious about this 😂

I clean mine regularly but I don't clean my 3 year old's very often if at all, his never make contact with the outside as he can't walk so the only thing outdoors they come in contact with is the footplate on his wheelchair.

I'd love to have a reason to clean his shoes.

TigerRag · 21/01/2024 19:44

I only clean mine if they're caked in mud

GintyMcGinty · 21/01/2024 19:50

Regularly - no.

If they look completely manky - probably.

Trainers get a wipe regularly and a washing machine monthly. School shoes get a clean weekly or if they're dirty between with cleaning spray and kitchen roll (patent shoes because they're easier to clean!)

I do them every so often, more in the winter than the summer as they tend to get muddy. Usually if one child's get muddy then I do everyone's, it's a job I enjoy.

When my kids were younger and I was working in the city, I would clean shoes regularly, as soon as they started to look grubby.

Now my DDs are young adults (still at home) and they wear trainers and Crocs, flip flops and Uggs etc, so no need. I will occasionally give my boots a wipe over if they look dull - I have one of those shoe shine sponges.

Ok I’m definitely on the slovenly end and need to up my game! Though DC wear black trainers to school so no polishing needed per se.

Where do you all do it? I was thinking newspaper spread over our kitchen table but is that a bit unhygienic?

Yes, I even have a box with all the polish and brushes in.

DC have left school now, but part of their uniform inspection was checking shoes were polished, so it was just the normal thing to do. They'de proper polish them probably every few weeks and just buff them in between. They have known to be caught buffing a shoe whilst on a foot on the back of the trousers.

I mostly wear leather shoes, so mine get looked after pretty well. For boots, suede ones get cleaned and sprayed at the start of the season, and the leather boots get polished or with Nixwax. I paid a lot for them, and some are years old, but you wouldn't say so. Leather sandals as and when needed. I do my main leather bag too, as they dry out, fade and can crack of you don't give them leather food.

Trainers, go in a bucket of need be, I prefer to not put them into the machine after a previous mishap.

Edited

I usually sit on my back step if it's dry out. Otherwise newspaper down on the kitchen floor.

It becomes somewhat of a joint effort then, as I have a Labrador and it's all very exciting whenever I sit on the floor, or the step. 😄

FalconryDays · 21/01/2024 22:30

@Rainallnight outdoors if weather allows otherwise newspaper on boot room/kitchen floor, windows open.

CrispyTofu · 21/01/2024 22:58

Yes, trainers and pumps in the washing machine. School shoes get a wipe over when they are taken off each day and a proper clean on a Friday ready for the following Monday. My shoes get a wipe over most days and a polish when needed. DH's are left to him.

Theresit · 21/01/2024 23:00

Once the children were at school they cleaned their own shoes.

Snugglemonkey · 22/01/2024 07:12

If they look grubby. We wear a lot of converse, which I stick in the washing machine. I also put other trainers and dc school shoes in. I have suede cleaning stuff that I mean to use, but have not in 5 months!
