Sadly, only around a fiver and not 5 million - that darned decimal point is always in the wrong place for me.

Has anyone you know won anything substantial?

Many moons ago, one of the receptionists at work one a cool £1M and came into work to hand in her notice with immediate effect. We were all really happy for her as she'd had a bit of a rough run in luck - our manager however tried to insist she work her notice!

She didn't 🙃

I worked with someone who put in a piece of inherited tat to the auctions and turned out it was A Very Big Deal and went for more than £1 million. It was in the local papers. He took it to the auction house in a carrier bag along with something he was more excited about which went for about £100.

The auction was Tuesday- he came in Wednesday and quit.

A work colleague won £180,000. A month later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and died around 6 months later! I would rather be lucky in health rather than wealth.

It isn't an either/or thing, though. I assume having some extra money made her final months a bit easier and she could leave the rest to family or friends, which would make her feel good, too.

Tropicalpunchhh · 20/01/2024 16:50

Not the lotto but I won 50k on a competition 2 years ago. Still have every penny today 😂

pontipinemum · 20/01/2024 17:02

The neighbour I grew up next to, her husband won just under a half a million in the work syndicate. It's a hardware shop, most people still stayed there apart from a couple who were near retirement and were both in it.

She/ they finished building their house. She got a nice new car (nothing stupid money but nice) and going by SM they seems to have a nice life. She had a decent job as well and he is shop manager so I guess being mortgage free for life they can spend their wages on the nice bits

Silverblue1985 · 20/01/2024 17:03

When I was four, I won 50DM (be worth around 200 EUR today) on a scratch card - which I bought (well, my grandfather, but I picked it!) from the money my grandmother gave me for a magazine they didn’t have at the newsagents. She was mad with him until I discovered the win and was dancing round the flat 😂 I felt very rich and invested it right away - into the so much desired toys from Toys’r’us 🙈

Since then I’ve matched four numbers in the lotto, unfortunately a Monday draw, so I got something like £35.

DrearyLane · 20/01/2024 17:10

My parent’ friends won about £3million. They were close to retirement age, bought a nicer house and homes for their children, have nice holidays and cars. They’re lovely people and I’m pleased for them.

i did know someone through work who was suing a relative for not sharing a lottery win. That was an interesting character..

feelingalittlehorse · 20/01/2024 17:28

Ohh ohh ohhh- I don’t know for sure but I am absolutely convinced that I know someone who has. And big money as well. They hide in plain sight by both having jobs that people think pay a lot better than they actually do (I know this as I’m in the same profession!) but there’s no way they can afford the lifestyle they have. They don’t live in a massive house, but it’s very smart and in an expensive area. He has very expensive cars sat in the garage, although their day to day cars are expensive, they aren’t obscene, so no-one would look twice at them. They holiday regularly, and when I looked up where they were going (just a nosy friend!) that’s when I started to become suspicious.
There may be family money, but I know them both quite well and I don’t think so.
It’s not my business so I’ve never discussed with other friends or asked them.

I won just over 2k last year. You don't get the usual "you've won a prize!" email for substantial wins, you get an email instead saying "Dear rock water, we have some exciting news about your lottery ticket, log in to your account to see the details" etc

Edited

Ah interesting.

When I was recently locked out of my online account, I asked the assistant about this as was always curious. You get the email around midnight and have to wait until 8am to login.
He said the email will be worded exactly the same as always, for security reasons. 🤔

Won around £365 on a shop bought lucky dip a few months ago.

RabbitsRock · 20/01/2024 17:53

I had a lottery ticket & thought I’d only won about a tenner but because it was a rollover, I had actually won £96. What made it even nicer was how thrilled the lady on the till at Tescos was for me, bless her. Had a couple of small wins on my Premium Bonds. Win fairly often on scratchcards, the biggest amount being £200 on a £5 one. I do think there should be bigger payouts on the draws such as Thunderball. You don’t get anything for matching one number, for example.

coxesorangepippin · 20/01/2024 17:54

So pleased for the receptionist

Ah- well it's definitely not! I've won a tenner before and I just got the standard "you've won a prize!" one- I've have attached both so you can see the difference!

I won the lottery !

Our friends won £1.7 million on their first go. (ages 79 and 74)
She was in the hairdressers he went next-door to buy a paper.
The shop assistant didn't have enough £1 coins so he bought 3 tickets.
They lived in a mobile home after suffering hard times. That evening they watched the lottery show he kept saying I've got that number until all 6 came out.
They now live in an assisted living area. Penthouse.
Have treated their family and a few friends (including us)
Still the same people and have the same friends.

Won £60 a few weeks ago. Treated us and teens to a take away. Made for a lovely family evening actually.. Much appreciated.. Ds 15 actually left his room...

That's how you do it then! (getting teens out of their room).

What's the best lottery to do?

Many years ago, my MIL was part of a school syndicate who won just over 1/4 million between them. Not life changing for anyone, but a nice sum (think a year’s salary each).

We were so excited for her - big holiday, new car? Nah. She bought a loft ladder. What a treat! 😂

Oh I love this! A loft ladder ❤️❤️

Nofilteritwonthelp · 21/01/2024 08:02

I know a few people who have won a decent amount, all really terrible people too!

littleblackcat27 · 21/01/2024 08:11

BetsyBobbins · 20/01/2024 14:14

I won 9 quid once and went straight into Superdrug and bought a new lipstick, happiest day of my life 👍🏼

😅😂

The one that you win - boom boom

Lorac23 · 21/01/2024 08:19

Most I've ever won is £100, I bought a new camera lens. Otherwise just occasional £5 to £30 here and there. Way better than the premium bonds ever were though!

hashbrownsandwich · 21/01/2024 08:22

An ex of mine got 5 numbers and the bonus back in circa 2005, was enough for him to buy his first house outright. We were about 20 at the time.

DyslexicPoster · 21/01/2024 14:42

Someone else dh works with had a massive win on scratch cards.

Brats4kid · 21/01/2024 17:36

I would get a new roof. 3 houses, 1 each for my 2 children and a 3rd to rent out. The rest in the bank and live off the Interest ☺️

MissingMoominMamma · 21/01/2024 17:39

I wouldn’t buy cars- they depreciate.

I’d quietly pay off any debt we had, cut my hours and travel more.

I would help my family to do the same.

And probably adopt a couple more rescue dogs 😃.
