Sadly, only around a fiver and not 5 million - that darned decimal point is always in the wrong place for me.

Has anyone you know won anything substantial?

Many moons ago, one of the receptionists at work one a cool £1M and came into work to hand in her notice with immediate effect. We were all really happy for her as she'd had a bit of a rough run in luck - our manager however tried to insist she work her notice!

She didn't 🙃

Years ago I worked with a couple who had won several million a few years prior. The wife told me they’d burned through the lot, mostly on holidays and debt. They used to buy around 30 lottery tickets a week.

I’ve never won more than a fiver. I don’t play it since it went up to £2.

Haggisfish3 · 20/01/2024 12:59

A close relative won one million. They make you speak to financial advisers and the banks phone with special rich people secret accounts. My relative spent all within five years on drink, drugs, cars and houses that they sold for a loss.

I love hearing lottery and daydream about what I would do if I won

someone at work won £6k on a syndicate and was able to put it towards a house deposit

an ex boyfriends sister won £100k on a syndicate about 25 years ago

rockwater · 20/01/2024 13:03

I won just over 2k last year. You don't get the usual "you've won a prize!" email for substantial wins, you get an email instead saying "Dear rock water, we have some exciting news about your lottery ticket, log in to your account to see the details" etc

I know an unpleasant woman who emigrated, allegedly with inheritance from two very working class grandparents, so it was thought unlikely and probate not likely to have been achieved so quickly.
She was an unpleasant person, so I was very happy for her win 🤣🤣🤣 ( ie she moved away, far far away)

MILTOBE · 20/01/2024 13:10

Oh god, I'd be beside myself!

I have a relative who we think must have won the lottery.

She was always incredibly generous to people and helped out number of different people with things in the family. Funded a few through university- that sort of thing.

It was only at her funeral, when she also left a couple of thousand to everyone in the family (large family), that we all added it up and realised that over her lifetime she'd given away significantly more than she could possibly have earned. She also would have been the sort to give a lot to charity, so she could well have won millions and we'd never have known.

She already lived in an idyllic location surrounded by friends and family, so she wouldn't have wanted to live anywhere else.

So our guess is she won the lottery about twenty years before she died, said nothing, and just quietly spent it on others, and small treats for herself and her dog. She would sometimes buy a little box of Ferraro rocher and get enormous joy out of eating a couple with her lunchtime vegetable soup.

That has made me well up a bit, @Curioushorse. Your relative sounds lovely!

I worked with a guy who won £200k on a scratchcard. He pissed it all on coke and escorts now works as a delivery driver!!

I really cannot fathom why or how so many winners burn through their winnings. I would see a financial advisor if it ever happened to me. If it were a sizeable pot I mean.

If it was only a million I could probably burn through it easily. I'm a non homeowner with barely any pension so by the time I'd bought a house, put enough in my pension for a comfortable retirement and put some away for DS's future I'd not have much left. I'd definitely have to carry on working. I'm not particularly financially savvy, having never had much money so I wouldn't have a clue how to invest and you hear tales of financial advisors screwing over their clients!

Toddlerteaplease · 20/01/2024 13:22

I won £1 on a scratch card yesterday. Didn't bother claiming it!

Toddlerteaplease · 20/01/2024 13:24

Postcode lottery sent me some socks a while back. I've won the odd ten bet, but I loved the socks.

HalloumiGeller · 20/01/2024 13:24

I can only dream of what I would do if I won even just 0.5 million! I'd pay my mortgage off, then squirrel a decent amount away for the kids futures and add the rest to my savings. I'd then carry on working part time lol.

RawBloomers · 20/01/2024 13:26

When I was a kid in the 70s a friend at school’s family won 15k (~70k today) on the Football Pools (is that still going?).

They went on holiday, bought a trampoline for the back garden (not common back then) and friend got the biggest stuffed giraffe I had ever seen. Apparently the money was gone in a couple of years. Presumably they also paid off their mortgage, but that wasn’t the sort of thing 9 year olds talked about, so I don’t know for certain!

bringincrazyback · 20/01/2024 13:40

Never had a big win, but back when the lottery first started, I had the first four numbers in the very first draw. That was a real heart-stopper moment, but sadly didn't get any more! I seem to remember getting about £60 for the 4 though which was nice.

Ferraro rocher with the veg soup😍

Moier · 20/01/2024 13:43

I won £140 for four numbers around my birthday ( last November) before then .. just the odd £30.
My old school friend once one 2 million on the football pools.. ( if you remember those).

turquoiseteal · 20/01/2024 13:44

I think the fact that most winners end up with nothing after a few years just shows you how little money sense the average person has. Shame really!

Thats not “burning through it” though. That’s investing it and sharing it.

Burning through it would be spending it on things that are either loss making, or not assets (lots of flash holidays, booze, coke and parties, expensive cars that depreciate in value).

Pickles2023 · 20/01/2024 13:53

I won 110 last year. Spent it on a family day out 😂😂

Id love to win an amount just to buy a mortgage free house, so earnings would be just for bills and a bit more of a relaxed life. (Weekends camping, activities for kids)

But my husband has all these lavish ideas of a mansion ffs...bugger cleaning a place that big and all i think about is the energy bills 😅😅

I had the first three numbers in the first ever draw! I remember getting so excited.

Bluevelvetsofa · 20/01/2024 14:14

I’ve never won anything, not even a raffle prize. I don’t know anyone who has, except that loads of people seem to win monthly on Premium Bonds. Not a sausage here.

I dream of what I’d do with a substantial win though.

BetsyBobbins · 20/01/2024 14:14

I won 9 quid once and went straight into Superdrug and bought a new lipstick, happiest day of my life 👍🏼

ShortHairedCat · 20/01/2024 14:18

The mother of someone I used to know won a life-changing amount on the lottery. Wasn’t a nice woman or a good mother. The kids had been very damaged by her so it was kind of undeserved. I’ve discovered since she’s suffered a few unpleasant blows so it really can’t buy happiness or peace of mind

MagpiePi · 20/01/2024 14:23

My ex won nearly £8000 on a scratch card. It was over 25 years ago when we were still together. We had a holiday to the Carribean which was nice.

I get really excited if I get an email saying check your account and have a few minutes planning how I'm going to spend my winnings before I check. It's only ever a fiver though.

SonicAllanKey · 20/01/2024 14:27

I’ve never won big but I have just bought a lottery ticket for tonight. I’d be happy with enough to be mortgage free tbh.
