Cordless vacuums. Recommend me yours?

Looking for a cordless vacuum. Would prefer it not to have a wall mounted charger like the Dyson so was looking at the Shark with a small battery. Can anyone tell me if it's any good or if there are others I should look at? Thanks.

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for vacuum cleaner recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best cordless vacuum cleaner page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

Don't tell me this! We have ordered a shark and I mostly have hard floors!

I have the GTech air ram and it's been fantastic for the last few years that we have had it. I'd really recommend it.

Our cordless Shark is fine on hard floors (we have either wooden flooring or slate tiles everywhere apart from stairs / landings). It's the anti hair wrap one for pets and we got 3 battery packs with it - amazing deal from QVC a couple of years ago. We had been quite happy with our cordless Dyson until we got a (not particularly hairy) dog and it just couldn't cope. Shark is fantastic for us and would definitely get another.

I have the Hoover HFree 500 Pet version.

Light as a feather, pick up fantastic on both hard floors and carpets. Plug in charger which only takes around 1.5 hours to fully charge. Very competitively priced. It’s anti hair wrap too and a piece of cake to clean.

Can highly recommend and I’m a former Shark fan who always bought Shark previously.

Doglover19 · 20/01/2024 10:26

I work for a big high st company and the majority of vacuum cleaners customers are buying atm are shark and Henry's (hetty etc) we have noticed a big drop in the amount of dysons being bought..
I had one of the latest dysons back before Christmas and it was really expensive £600 and it felt like a toy. It was cheap plastic and just didn't look worth the money at all. It felt like a toy.

Take from that as you wish but we sell a LOT of shark vacuum cleaners.

Joey1976 · 20/01/2024 10:29

We all do have a Samsung and have been impressed!

I have Sharks with double battery chargers.
But my sharks are hopeless at picking up 'bits' on hard floors - they will pick them up but deposit them back on the floor when machine turned off so I keep the motor running and tip the machine upside down and take it to the bin to empty the bits.
The Dyson doesn't have this problem but I think the shark better on carpets.

This is exactly what mine did. I have a small child and a cat, most of the things I need to hoover are 'bits' 😂 Utterly useless.

HelpMeGetThrough · 20/01/2024 10:39

Love to be able to recommend our Dyson, but won't. They always have a design fault somewhere along the line.

The one we have can "bend" at the attachment to get under things like tables, trouble is, it never stays in the locked position, it's always unlocking when it shouldn't. It's really annoying.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/01/2024 10:40

I had a Shark but it used to leave a sprinkling of grit when switched off . I even tried running it a few secomds after finishing or holding over a bin but that didn't help . Made sure everything was clear , now blockages m cannister emptied each time .

I bought a Halo Capsual for quick cleans , it plugs in. it has bags whereas the Shark was a cannister .
The Halo is so much better , I use on boost on carpet or non boost on hard floors .

For more heavy duty cleanning I have a George (Henrys Much Bigger Cousin) Grin

I've a Dyson cordless and a shark (don't ask why!) - I like the light feature on the shark but couldn't justify the cost for the light on the Dyson. I think the loss of suction mentioned will be the machines needing a deep clean. I do like Dyson but they are so expensive

SnapdragonToadflax · 20/01/2024 11:06

@bestbefore Do you mean a 'take everything apart and clean the filters' deep clean? Or some kind of 'send it away' deep clean? Because both times mine lost suction, I did everything they recommend to get it as clean as possible.

TheFairyCaravan · 20/01/2024 11:48

I’ve got a cordless Shark. I’ve never had to unclog it. It works really well on both hard floors and carpets. It doesn’t leave any bits behind when I vacuum either.

DS2 and DDIL wanted a cordless Dyson, which I bought them, and it’s forever blocking and clogging. They hate it.

bestbefore · 20/01/2024 11:56

@SnapdragonToadflax I've never had to send any away so I guess I mean a massive take apart, clean in all crevices and check for working parts. It could also be a battery loss. Dyson are very good at replacing them if they go.

KitchenSinkLlama · 20/01/2024 11:59

I have the Bosch unlimited 6. So much better than shark and Dyson, both of which I have had.

KitchenSinkLlama · 20/01/2024 12:01

Sorry I mean unlimited 7 with the jointed stick.

Scoleah · 20/01/2024 12:02

I bought a shark, was super excited about it, but I found the head to be too clunky to get into the corners, and it wasn't powerful unless I pulled the extra boost lever thingy.
Shark has a no quibble returns though!

Muststopeating · 20/01/2024 12:53

I love my Shark. Had it 4 years and about to replace with another Shark. I have the flexology one that bends. I don't use it for that for cleaning but I do find it gives more options for storage.

I have a cleaner who I get to use the Henry otherwise the Shark was never clean/empty when I wanted to use it.

I have 3 small kids and occasional visiting dogs but no pets.

The battery lasts long enough to do a pretty decent in between clean of downstairs (circa 120sqm, mostly hard floor, one room carpet plus 3 rugs).

I find the trail of grit is either when it's started to clog or the filters haven't been cleaned for a while (i.e. 4 months plus).

I don't get clogs very often, but definitely get them more after my brother's two massive dogs have visited. So I would imagine it's not ideal for pets.

Muststopeating · 20/01/2024 12:54

I am hoping the new anti wrap does what it says as the worst thing about mine is cleaning the brush rolls. Cleaning the filters is easy, just a rinse under the tap for a couple of minutes. Worst bit about that is waiting for them to dry to use it again (I usually realise they need doing at the start of a clean). When I buy another one I will probably order a spare set of filters to avoid that.

Moier · 20/01/2024 13:12

I have that Shark one but a duel battery.. l keep the charger plugged in and the vacuum in the cupboard.
Had a Dyson once.. didn't rate it.

Continueasweareormakeachange · 20/01/2024 13:16

@LadyBird1973 I bought a fairly cheap one from Amazon for around £120 and love it! Thought I'd use it as a quick pick up during the week and do a proper clean with my trusted corded one but no need at all, it's brilliant. I read a lot of reviews before I chose which one.

Skybyrd · 20/01/2024 15:01

We've recently replaced our Shark with a Samsung (Which best buy one) and it's brilliant! The Shark was good initially but after that it was utterly useless for anything but dog hair on the carpet (brilliant for that). This was despite having a second filter and washing/drying/changing the filter weekly. We also experienced the trail of grit on hard floors and frequent clogging. We kept the Shark for carpets and brought our old corded Henry back in from the garage for the hard floors and other bits the Shark didn't manage.

In contrast the Samsung cleans right up to the edge, picks up perfectly on all floor surfaces and is a doddle to empty and clean. The battery does our whole 3 bed bungalow, various rugs, celling corners and soft surfaces and both dehumidifier filters on 1/3-1/2 a battery, using a mix of suction levels (it has 3) the battery has never run out so can't say exactly how long that takes. Hair doesn't get caught around the brush either, which is helpful.

The Shark is being recycled and Henry is returning to his garage job.

ApolloandDaphne · 20/01/2024 16:41

We have collected the Shark and tried it out. So far it seems great. I guess time will tell if it stays as good.
