Start with a recipe but in short no, absolutely not

Tinkeytonkoldfruit · 19/01/2024 22:04

First off, what kind of curry do you want to make?

NisekoWhistler · 19/01/2024 22:05

Do you want a Thai curry or Indian curry. What do you fancy?

What kind of curry/ Thai, Indian or Katsu curry sauce?

NuffSaidSam · 19/01/2024 22:06

Have you heard of Google? If you type 'easy curry recipe' into there it'll give you some ideas.

Prena · 19/01/2024 22:07

What kind of curry are you wanting is the starting point, there are some delicious ones with coconut cream, but what type are you wanting to replicate?

Just a nice basic curry something that extremely foolproof and tastes nice 👌

You need to fry the onion and then the spices first to get the best flavour. It's not tricky though. Enjoy

Mumaway · 19/01/2024 22:07

If you are a curry beginner, consider a curry paste, marinade your meat in it, then fry it off with onions and peppers, add the coconut milk and reduce down. Might not be authentic but it will be delicious and easy.

TwiddlingMyToes · 19/01/2024 22:08

I'm super lazy, so I buy a sachet if "korma" mix, or 'butter chicken" mix and add it to coconut milk. I'm sure there are more thorough ways of doing it though!

HashBrownandBeans · 19/01/2024 22:08

Curry has to be built up in layers, marinated meat(on the bone is best) pan roasted dry spices, ghee instead of oil, onions, veg, then coconut milk if the recipe calls for it. I prefer the coconut blocks for korma or masala, better texture

NisekoWhistler · 19/01/2024 22:09

This was the first curry I made years ago. So easy and so delicious

op buy a jar of curry paste and use half a jar with a tin of coconut milk

fry onions and chicken. Add paste and the coconut milk

OkPedro · 19/01/2024 22:11

I second using curry paste. Get yourself a jar of pataks,I love the madras it's quite hot. I fry the paste in the pan then add the chicken/beef or veg. I then add the coconut milk and simmer on low heat for about 10 mins

And then do you just start picking some spices to add?

I do this for a quick curry and it tastes delicious and homemade!

YouTube BIR Indian food, you need to make base gravy, fantastic recipes, my DS has made fantastic Korma, madras etc following these recipes, you do need to buy a lot of different spices though.

Superfrog3 · 19/01/2024 22:14

Chop an onion finely, garlic puree or crush a garlic clove if you have time, a bit of ginger?? put it in a pan with a little bit of oil, it will start to soften. Add curry powder, gaaram mansala, turmeric, coriander or any mix of spices you fancy. Add ingredients (meat, veg or whatever) sweet potato, peppers ect is nice and then coconut milk. Add water or cream or corn flour depending on consistency you want. Fresh coriander if you want to get fancy at the end of cooking.

Make it your own, season well and do whatever makes you happy and you more or less can't go wrong ( in my opinion)

... Failing that just Google a recipe

chickensadsikky · 19/01/2024 22:14

You're all too kind. I'll have a look at some
Pastes ! Ps isint the cost of a takeaway getting so expensive 😭😩

Definitely follow a recipe. For most curries, the onions are the starting point.

If you're a total cooking novice, you could start with a jar of curry paste, though

If you want to get into making curries from scratch, Meera Sodha's recipes are very accessible, using readily available ingredients.

@chickensadsikky most supermarkets stock curry packs which contain the spices etc you need, a list of things to add & clear instructions on how to make it. They're a good place to start if you want to cook fresh (eg not a jar) but not confident and need it fairly simple.

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 19/01/2024 22:20

I found this today and it sounds like what you are looking for. Uses coconut milk and curry powder...
