I’ve seen various TikTok’s posts on fb ect today saying we are heading for ww3 .

do you think we are ?

I do not.

Also, probably wise to get your geopolitical information from sources other than TikTok. Just a thought…

Mummyofbananas · 20/01/2024 17:29

Possibly- maybe some sort of cold war type thing. I'm not sure we'll see war like it was in the past though I think it'll be a different kind of war when/if it does happen- more technological.

colouringindoors · 20/01/2024 17:42

On balance I don't, particularly if it's proclaimed from TikTok and FB.

But I am very concerned about the potential for Trump to be re-elected, and his impact on multiple conflicts and areas of vulnerability.

That was the thinking two years back..."it'll be cyber" etc...

Yet in the Russia Ukraine conflict despite the use of modern tech and cyber you've still got the poor bloody infantry slogging it out in the trenches.

MagicFox · 20/01/2024 17:49

That's very true @notimagain But I wonder when we're taking about great power conflict how it would look?

Chickpea17 · 20/01/2024 17:49

No and even if there was I don't think it would be a war as we know it, It would be who would press the button first.

Your guess is as good as mine but I vividly recall the cyber/tech debate from a couple of years back in the run up to the Russian invasion.

The idea that you could having a tech war or mainly cyber war with minimal armed forces or materiel such as tanks (cf. Boris Johnson) appeared to be a popular view, and seems to have been taught in some universities and very much liked by those politicians looking to cut defence spending.

Two years later here we are...

I think Cyber or Biological "weapons" would be used, certainly not nuclear.

Yes, that’s true but it’s a consequence of the determination on both sides to fight the war only on Ukrainian soil & not allow it to escalate. However awful the war is, it has been fought within strict parameters.

Ukraine’s allies have not given it weapons systems capable of launching major attacks on Russian cities or critical infrastructure (eg drones & cruise missiles) and Russia has been very careful not to fire anything into NATO territory or put a single soldier’s boot on the ground there.

notimagain · 20/01/2024 21:51

@BarelyLiterate

I'm really not sure I'd assume that if the gloves came off and there a widespread escalation of conflict the role of the land armies/infantry would suddenly become obsolete.

Looking back to the Cold War, post the "trip wire" policy days, it was thought the Warpac forces might move west rapidly and without warning. In those circumstances the role of conventional land forces was critical in order to, amongst other things, buy time for (hopefully) a political solution.....Now sure modern tech/cyber can certainly complement land fighting (we've seen that in Ukraine) but IMHO it can't replace, excuse the cliche, "boots on the ground".

I would agree though that I wouldn't expect to see the infantry in the trenches, bogged down for months and months.....

The Conversation one was interesting: I think it's hard, and horrible, to imagine what it would look like in the 21st century, as well as to understand what if any fail safes there are

Rather ageist to call them senile.Yes they are men but to be honest women can be as dominant and war mongering as men.watch the news.Senile is an offensive term of abuse.Call them power mad dictators but watch your ageist language

PocketSand · 21/01/2024 16:38

Strange how no contributor mentions money. How war is both waged over money and how it increases the wealth of the already rich. Almost like we are all in it together.

The Covid pandemic created huge profit and increased inequality exponentially. But the story was we were all in it together.

How do you keep returns and profit just as high if not higher? Whilst securing consent from the population? Erm, existential threat!

Doesn't matter if the pandemic or Russia or Iran or North Korea is not a real existential threat if they can be utilised and you have the power to act as if an irritant is an existential threat.

Ageist? Damn right. How come it's always men of a certain age that are involved in these violent actions? Let's call it 'age related cognitive and moral impairment' then.

I'm still trying to think hard of a woman that's been a murderous dictator. Perhaps Elena Ceaușescu? Of course, she was acting alongside her husband. Who knows if she could have achieved it alone.
Aung San Suu Kyi? The Rohingya muslins would certainly agree, but she has been removed from office now.
Elizabeth Bathory? Well, who knows if all that business even happened. I don't think it's been independently verified and it was a long time ago.

amylou8 · 21/01/2024 19:22

I think there's a strong possibility. All the ingredients are there.
