If you could have a night out at the cinema, a live music gig or a theatre show, which would you prefer?

I haven’t been on a proper night out for ages and I feel like I’m missing out. I am going to make an effort to do things I really enjoy and miss like the above. For me, I think I enjoy live music the most, followed by a good film at the cinema then a theatre show although I love them all.

Theatre, then music, then cinema.

Maddy70 · 19/01/2024 21:57

A gig every time!

HardcoreLadyType · 19/01/2024 22:02

Theatre, music, cinema, although the music would be a classical music concert, not a band.

I like all kinds of theatre, including plays, musicals, opera and dance, and I’m not usually into blockbuster type films as much - I prefer more “arty” cinema.

Letterbix · 19/01/2024 22:06

Definitely live music. I get fidgety in the theatre. Or I want to dance and sing along, which you can do at a gig but is frowned upon at the theatre.

No interest in cinema I'd rather watch films at home.

storminacupoftea · 19/01/2024 22:06

Theatre or stand-up.

Then cinema, although it’s so expensive these days.

Gigs are sweaty and tiring.

Allmarbleslost · 19/01/2024 22:07

Theatre

NuffSaidSam · 19/01/2024 22:08

Theatre.

Then live music.

Then cinema. I only go to the cinema about once every ten years. Not a big fan.

Hoolihan · 19/01/2024 22:13

Music definitely. I love the cinema too but that's more of an afternoon treat when it's quieter.

NoTouch · 19/01/2024 22:13

If I had to pick from those 3 it would be theatre as long as it was a show I would enjoy.

I would love and prefer socialising with live music, but along with cinema it is too loud and a no go for my tinnitus.

SkaneTos · 19/01/2024 22:14

Theatre.

TeabySea · 19/01/2024 22:24

Concert first choice, theatre second choice. Not bothered about the cinema.
I try to do once concert and one theatre visit a year, depending on available options.

aleew · 19/01/2024 22:53

Theatre definitely. I used to go to loads of theatre shows pre-kids. Then cinema. Not that bothered about gigs, I dislike the standing ones where you can't sit down for 2 hours.

BanjoMango · 19/01/2024 22:57

Theatre and then cinema

MothralovesGojira · 19/01/2024 23:01

Live music first every time. I've done 2 gigs this month and have 3 next month. You're never too old (mid 50's) and I'm never the oldest person in attendance!
I enjoy cinema too but find the theatre expensive in comparison for value for money. I used to go up to London a lot to see theatre shows on cheap tickets but stopped when the train issues became so bad.

Carsarelife · 19/01/2024 23:02

Live music
Theatre
Cinema (Everyman)

nocoolnamesleft · 19/01/2024 23:05

Theatre, definitely.

CrapGoat · 19/01/2024 23:05

I adore the theatre so that would be no choice for me. I absolutely despise cinemas though, odd perhaps but sitting in a dark dingy room with a huge screen isn't my idea of fun.

I'm amazed only one other person is saying stand-up. I'd take a comedy night over all the other options.

Rocknrollstar · 20/01/2024 10:09

Theatre definitely. I love a good night out with friends with laughter and , if possible, some dancing. Music gig would depend on who is on and I usually wait for movies to be on streaming on tv. Cinema doesn’t really count as a night out for me.

Forthwith · 20/01/2024 10:10

Music or theatre, depending on my energy levels.

Cinema is enjoyable, but it’s not ‘a night out’ to me.

A good concert always lifts the spirits.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 20/01/2024 10:13

Theatre: first choice every time. I just have to hope big gob, big hat and big toilet-goer is sat nowhere near me!

Cinema: I prefer to watch films at home so I can enjoy them in peace and quiet. Happy to pay sky cinema to do that or wait until the film gets released on Netflix!

Live gig: My idea of hell.

cheesychipsontheoche · 20/01/2024 10:13

Gig, always. I'm not happy unless I've got something booked. I'll watch anything from a pub band to massive arenas, live music is the most joyful experience.

Crunchymum · 20/01/2024 10:16

100% live gig. Not fussed about cinema and I don't get excited about the theatre (although have been loads and seen some amazing productions)

minipie · 20/01/2024 10:20

Theatre, then live music, then cinema

I’m fussy about live music - I would pick live music every time if it was a favourite band and in a good venue (not a stadium), but that’s very rare.

RunnyPaint · 20/01/2024 10:22

Local theatre (not for a musical, although I did enjoy Spamalot). I went to a play last week and will be going again over the next few months.

I had a bad experience of being hassled (some stupid bloke kept jostling me, even when I tried to position myself in the middle of my group of friends, and then poured a drink down my back, no idea what I had done to be singled out) in gig a couple of years ago and had to leave early. So, I generally only see live music at festivals now. Friends often tell me about gigs I would enjoy, but I now need an escape route (and to be with my 6' 6" DH for protection) 🙄

Cinema can be good, but it has to be the right film in the right place: e.g., the small local cinema that is clean, rather than the sticky multiplex at the retail park.
