How do I remove this mould from my walls ?

pinkkoo · 19/01/2024 20:56

I moved into my house in November
It's a h/a property
I've reported missing tiles from roof but it's been 5 weeks and not fixed so pointless reporting it.
This is my bedroom cupboard
How do I clean this ?
Can I block this vent up?
Upstairs is freezing even with heating on full

How do I remove this mould from my walls ?

Following, I have the same issue

Snippit · 19/01/2024 21:00

Could environmental health help? They may be able to advise after an inspection and give some weight behind your complaint. Or contact your local M.P, hope you get it sorted soon.

Use a mold spray and then once cleaned put a dehumidifier in the cupboard to dry it out. Keep the cupboard door open and use a dehumidifier in that room going forward.

Blocking the vent would make matters worse.

Lindy2 · 19/01/2024 21:02

I think if you block the vent it will get worse. You need airflow.

Missing tiles from the roof is a huge problem. They need to be replaced. Keep reporting until it's fixed.

There are some good mould remover sprays. Home Bargains sell some great ones for only a couple of pounds. If there's damp from the roof though the mould will just come back.

A dehumidifier might help until the damp is fixed.

Alwaysalwayscold · 19/01/2024 21:04

Don't use bleach. Get a mould spray and use as directed, they work well.

However it will 100% come straight back if the cause isn't dealt with.

CrunchyCarrot · 19/01/2024 21:06

Mould hates diluted vinegar, that's what we use first to get off the visible mould. Next use a mould-resistant paint, we like bathroom paints, they are resistant to mould and easy to wipe moisture off. Since we've done that we've had less problems.

On no account remove the air vent, without it things will be worse! Also use a dehumidifier as others have suggested.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 19/01/2024 21:10

Keep reporting it regularly to the HA, until you get the roof tiles fixed you are fighting a losing battle.

If you report it three times and get nowhere make a formal complaint, then go to the ombudsman, then get speak to your local law centre or citizens advice about bringing a claim for housing disrepair.

Take regular dated photos of the mould.

In the meantime clean mould off with white vinegar or dilute bleach.

If you are allowed to repaint buy special mould prevention paint.

Do not block the vent, you need air movement, clean the vent and make sure nothing is covering it. Leave the cupboard door open to allow more air to circulate. Open your windows and air the house regularly.

Invest in a dehumidifier.

intergalacticplanetary · 19/01/2024 21:10

Report the mould to your HA. Mould is a massive hot topic at the moment and they are obliged to sort it out for you.

intergalacticplanetary · 19/01/2024 21:14

Just to add, if it drags on too long, escalate to the Chief Executive or your MP. That's a sure fire way of getting a HA to take notice.

pinkkoo · 19/01/2024 21:17

It's actually the ridge tile from the roof that is missing
I've been told it's not a priority
The missing tile isn't near my bedroom so could it be the reason for the mold ?

It will become a priority when you bring a disrepair claim but you have to follow the proper process of complaints procedure and ombudsman first.

Twitter can help prompt action.

The missing roof tile could be causing the mould but unless it is pretty close then the mould is more likely to be due to poor ventilation, lack of heat and moisture generated within the property.

The ridge tile is for the HA to fix, complaining about the mould alone they are likely to assume it is down to tenant behaviour

Jf20 · 19/01/2024 21:29

Use cillit bang black mould remover. Spray on, leave a couple of mins and wipe off. Giving it a quick coat of mould resistant paint will help but really just keep cleaning with cillit bang.

Pigeonqueen · 19/01/2024 21:31

Mould remover spray. Leave the cupboard open constantly to allow the air to circulate. Blocking the vent will make it worse.

Scampuss · 19/01/2024 21:34

That looks a lot like historic mould that's been lazily painted over without treating and is now coming through the new paint.

Use a mould spray, keep the cupboard empty and the door open for now to maintain ventilation. Do not cover the vent!

Cheeesus · 19/01/2024 21:37

This one is a good spray

AdoraBell · 19/01/2024 22:02

Definitely a mould spray and a dehumidifier if you can afford one. Don’t block the vent. Also report with the pictures.

Yep best one I've used. It kept it away for months when I've used it.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 19/01/2024 22:09

Mould gel works well

Binfire · 19/01/2024 22:10

I hope you can get on top of it with mould spray, just a reminder that it’s one of the strongest cleaners that you can buy so use a face mask and gloves/eye protection. It might feel like overkill but it’s better than getting any on your skin or in your eyes!

Mould spray is bleach!

MadeOfAllWork · 19/01/2024 22:12

Make sure you air the room every day, even when it’s really cold. Keep on to the HA, daily if you have to.

LeavesOnTrees · 19/01/2024 22:12

White vinegar works best.
They definitely need to fix the roof problem, as long as water is getting in the problem won't go away.
Don't block up the vents.

Hmmmmaybe · 19/01/2024 22:13

Complain formally and eaclTe
the complaint to the housing ombudam as soon as you can if they don’t fix it

Pootlepattle · 19/01/2024 22:17

Do your windows have trickle vents? If not open all windows just a crack each day as you need as much ventilation as possible even when it’s Baltic!
