If you have a silk pillowcase ...

... do you follow the washing instructions? I was thinking of buying one from John Lewis with my Xmas gift voucher. However the instructions say it needs to be "cool washed ... using a specialist silk liquid detergent". Sounds like a faff as it would need to be washed separately from the rest of the bedding (which I wash at either 30 or 40 degrees depending on whether my dedication to the planet outweighs my dust allergy tolerance or vice versa).

Nope I chuck mine in a 30 wash with similar colours. Life's too short. Mind you, I only have cheap ones off Amazon!

forrestgreen · 19/01/2024 10:17

Mines silk so yes every now and then it goes on a silk wash with some wool and silk product

wandawaves · 19/01/2024 10:18

Nope, I wash it with all the sheets. Cold water, normal detergent.

I wash mine in Woolite alongside my wool jumpers and socks, they always come up well. A previous set I tried to save time/effort several times by throwing them in with the rest of my washing (Daz powder) and they quite quickly wore thin and the silk fabric split so had to be thrown away.

cozycat1 · 19/01/2024 19:32

Hand wash with silk and will detergent. Not much of faff.

swedishmom24 · 19/01/2024 19:50

I washed mine in the sink with wool detergent. When I got fed up of doing this and put it in the machine it split. So yes I think you do need to hand wash really

DinosaurQuilt · 19/01/2024 19:56

Silk pillow case gets chucked in with the normal sheet wash of 40 degrees and then gets a medium iron. Ok. The edges have come away but it still does the biz.

LadyEloise1 · 19/01/2024 20:00

I chucked mine e in at 40 degrees and detergent.
They fell apart after a while
Now they go in a delicates wash.

Why do you wash your sheets in cold water @wandawaves ?
Are they silk too ?

Rowgtfc72 · 19/01/2024 20:01

In with the rest of the bedding on 40°.
They are amazon cheapies but come to no harm yet.

MissSookieStackhouse · 19/01/2024 20:38

Started off doing the proper care instructions, but now i just stick them in with the rest of the bedlinen at 40 degrees, normal wash. They seem to have survived ok!

EBearhug · 19/01/2024 20:56

No, goes in the normal wash. Some years old now. It's also survived accidental testing at higher temperatures... (I also have silk sheets, duvet cover, pyjamas.) I might be reducing the life of it all a bit, but they're some years old now, and get washed regularly.

CharlesChickens · 19/01/2024 20:59

I wash mine on a silk wash with delicates detergent, or in with woollies . Too expensive to wreck !

DaphneMoo · 19/01/2024 20:59

Put it inside a cotton pillow case and in a normal 40° wash, it's a few years old and going strong

Fiddlersgreen · 19/01/2024 21:03

I put mine in a laundry bag and wash it on a 30 degree cycle

PatFussy · 19/01/2024 21:06

I just hand wash mine in the basin. Takes 5 mins and dries really quickly

doodleygirl · 19/01/2024 21:08

I just chuck mine in with the rest of the washing

Pashazade · 19/01/2024 21:12

My first one lasted 8 years and got washed regularly with normal wash at 30 or 40. My bedding goes through at 60 so I do split them out.

Trahlalalala · 19/01/2024 21:17

I stick mine in with my woolies and a dollop of Persil Silk and Wool. Always fine. One accidentally got into a low heat tumble dry load of socks and is not quite the same but not ruined either.

DustyLee123 · 19/01/2024 21:18

Mine goes in with a wash at 40. Always dry it on the radiator or line though, I made the mistake of tumbling one once.

MotherOfCatBoy · 19/01/2024 21:22

Normal wash but 40 not 60. They seem just fine.

mindworkingovertime · 19/01/2024 21:28

Nope 30 degree quick wash using non bio gel

Jeannie88 · 19/01/2024 21:35

Have always liked cotton, doesn't silk get a bit warm and slidey? Love the feel of it but couldn't imagine having it as Bedsheets etc xx

kissthecarboniferouslimestone · 19/01/2024 21:43

The last ones I bought from JL disintegrated when I didn’t wash them properly so now I buy more of them and let them accumulate and wash in mesh bags with detergent for silks and on 30. They are doing great so far. They wash and dry quickly. It’s not too much of a faff.

wandawaves · 19/01/2024 22:32

@LadyEloise1 where I live (not UK) it's completely normal to do all your washing in cold water. I've noticed from MN that you guys all tend to wash in warm water. Not sure why the difference!

Leopardmatches · 19/01/2024 22:34

Mine goes on either a 40 or 60 cotton wash. I only use Ecover liquid though. I’ve been known to tumble dry it on hot too. They last longer if you don’t tumble fry them but washing them on hot doesn’t seem to damage them. I have the JL ones.
