If you have a silk pillowcase ...

... do you follow the washing instructions? I was thinking of buying one from John Lewis with my Xmas gift voucher. However the instructions say it needs to be "cool washed ... using a specialist silk liquid detergent". Sounds like a faff as it would need to be washed separately from the rest of the bedding (which I wash at either 30 or 40 degrees depending on whether my dedication to the planet outweighs my dust allergy tolerance or vice versa).

Everything goes in at $30ib our house with persil retail

Ibizafun · 19/01/2024 22:40

For people saying they do their sheets on cold wash.. does that really get them clean? I always do 60 for sheets and towels as I thought that was recommended (if not eco friendly).

No, goes in the normal wash. Some years old now. It's also survived accidental testing at higher temperatures... (I also have silk sheets, duvet cover, pyjamas.) I might be reducing the life of it all a bit, but they're some years old now, and get washed regularly.

Wow, how do you stay in bed? I'd imagine you'd shoot straight off the side ! Grin

I used to wash mine with everything else on a 40 cotton wash but one did fray a bit. Since then I've washed on a 30 degree cottons wash (on the shorter cycle) and had no problems. I use Bold 3 in 1 not a handwash detergent. I never tumble dry them.

albaalba351 · 19/01/2024 22:54

I have a full Mulberry Silk bed set that is 22 Momme. I put it through the wash twice a week on the delicate wash setting of 30 degrees - and then let it spin. I use the Lab Co 'relaxing' laundry sheets and their fabric conditioner, as well as a bit of white vinegar to increase its lustre. My silk is now three years old and in perfect condition! It takes very little time to deal with... I love my silk and can only sleep in it - I really recommend investing the time in looking after it, and it will look after you..

BinkyBeaufort · 19/01/2024 22:54

For two years I hand washed mine - no great faff so I didn't mind. But then one time they ended up with the rest of the bedding in a 40 degree wash and they came out just fine. Don't tumble dry them though, just hang in airing cupboard.

albaalba351 · 19/01/2024 22:55

Also it only air dries, I wouldn't tumble dry it - as it will get ruined!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 19/01/2024 22:59

Goes in with the whites at 30, fairy washing powder, dries on the airer (or radiator if DP misjudged the finish time).

Don't even need to iron it because any creases fall out as it comes out the machine.

Have always liked cotton, doesn't silk get a bit warm and slidey? Love the feel of it but couldn't imagine having it as Bedsheets etc xx

No, the magic of it is that you are always sleeping on the cool side of the pillow.

It's not slippery, either, it's smooth, so you don't 'stick' from friction, but there's no sliding around.

It's not that slippery. Plus my bed is flat, not at an angle. But think soft rather than slippery.

Deadringer · 19/01/2024 23:56

I machine wash mine at 40 with the rest of my bed linen, no problems.

Pillow is fine, full sheets is exactly as you say - slidey.

Dilbertian · 20/01/2024 00:51

I had several, so I would put them all in a delicates load every couple of months, often adding any other delicates such as the silk blouses I use to wear for work. If I put them in a regular load I would put them in lingerie bags, and only in a mixed/synthetics cycle, not a cottons cycle. I wash my silks and my wools in liquid soap flakes. I can't use most specialist detergents as they are loaded with things I am allergic to.

Am lying between silk bedsheets as I type this. Not slidey!

wandawaves · 20/01/2024 02:42

@Ibizafun yes! Everything comes out clean in cold water. As I said, it's the normal thing where I live.

Really?! I find them so slidey. Like I cant relax my muscles because my legs don’t quite stay in the position I want. This must be like the micro fibre towel thing - like how some people find them soft and other people find them scratchy lol

albaalba351 · 22/01/2024 15:49

@Devonshiregal I also have Mulberry silk sheets and pillows and a duvet set and have slept in them for years without any sliding/ pillows and duvets falling off. When you first get a set of good quality pure silk bedding, it takes a good few weeks to stop it being slippery. After this time lots of its sheen disappears, and a beautiful very soft material remains without the slip. If you buy a silk blend mixed with Polyester, then unfortunately it will always remain slippery.

Ooh I’ll have to try this as I like the idea of silk but my (admitted cheap) ones just felt too smooth! Thanks!

LoobyDop · 22/01/2024 16:15

Normal wash at 40 degrees, just put them in bags to stop them from getting too pulled about during the spin cycle. No tumble drying, but I don’t do that to anything except towels anyway.

fredafry · 22/01/2024 16:25

It goes on a short delicates wash and is air dried.
