Do you wake in the night

I don't mean if you have a baby /toddler you have to get up to.

Do you wake up for no reason. I wake up around 6 times a night I fall asleep normally 5/10 mins later . It has no pattern I could be asleep for a couple of hours then wake up. Or or I could wake up 10-20 mins after falling to sleep.

I don't, I certainly sleep through when my DS does!

Does that always happen to you, or could you be my be restless because you're stressed or similar?

Do your best not to clock watch, in the past I had trouble falling asleep and it felt much better when I stopped checking the time

Morningmeeting · 19/01/2024 07:57

I used to be like this, ironically, after having kids and doing pelvic floor exercises regularly, it stopped. I only wake once now. I know another woman who found the same.

Could you have a weak PF, or bladder pressurized if you get constipation/bloating that is causing the problem?

Or are you peri menopausal? If so some oestrogen cream applied to your Vulva can strengthen the PF.

barkymcbark · 19/01/2024 08:13

I never used to before I had dc. I considered it a bad nights sleep if I woke once.

Then my dc came along and I don't think I got a nights without someone waking me up for about 6 years. Since then I always surface once or twice, it's now more often with menopause. It's probably been 17 years since I've slept all the way through the night

Some nights I wake up every 45 mins or so. A good night is when I quickly get back to sleep, a bad night is when I wake up and then can't get back to sleep and end up with about 3/4 hours broken sleep.

I slept best when my DC were little I think breastfeeding and more physically tired perhaps.

Generally always struggled to get to sleep and wake up easily.

megletthesecond · 19/01/2024 08:17

Yes. Worrying around 3-4am.

Shamefullhouse · 19/01/2024 08:30

Sounds like it could be a mix of reasons then. Hormones, stress,

Stress/lots on my mind can cause me to wake up - today will be a long day. Woke up around 3:30 fretful sleep till alarm went off :(

No problem falling asleep! Why I woke up literally with a work worry as my first thought!

Grhhh

Tessisme · 19/01/2024 08:41

Every single night without fail. Since I was a child. A good night is if I only waken up the once. I'm a worrier and have my 'best' thoughts at stupid o'clock in the morning.

Smallngrumpy · 19/01/2024 08:41

Have always been a bad sleeper. Some nights I cant get to sleep til early hours, some nights I cant stay asleep.
A good night for me is a few 3 hour stretches. I can survive on very little sleep, suppose Ive got used to it over the years.
Its actually got better as Ive got older and found abed time routine that works- no caffeine after midday, bedtime sameish time every day, dark room, white noise.
Whats odd is my brother and sister are awful sleepers too but they chose different ways to cope, one drinks before bed(not loads justa anight cap) and one sleeps til 10-11 in the morning.

WhenWereYouUnderMe · 19/01/2024 08:42

I don't sleep that well really. A lot on my mind the last year or so.

Last night I was asleep at midnight, woke up just after two, read until about 4, then woke up properly at 6.23.

Pretty standard. I'm really fucking annoyed about it.

IggOrEgg · 19/01/2024 08:44

No, not unless my joints/back are particularly bad (chronic conditions), or I’m very stressed about something.

DominiqueBernard · 19/01/2024 08:45

I wake up regularly throughout the night and have taught myself to put myself back to sleep e.g. trying to blank out my thoughts and reach back into the state of sleep. By 4.15a.m. I am properly awake, though, and approx. once a week it's even earlier, with stressful thoughts.
Putting myself to bed earlier, around 11pm, does help, as I still wake at 4ish regardless of whether I went to bed at 11 or midnight.
I have always been a light sleeper, unless I have a horrid cold or something and have taken meds.
My dad has always been a terrible sleeper and I have never slept much either, even as a teenager. I don't feel tired, but if I get a week or more with very little sleep I find I am a bit rusty mentally, especially at the end of the day when the light goes.
Since cancer and menopause a couple of years ago I have to wee at least once a night unless I am very strict with drinks in the evening - just one glass of water with dinner around 8pm.

TheRulerofThings · 19/01/2024 08:47

I do - or at least I did. I had a sleep study and was diagnosed with sleep apnoea. It’s being treated now and my sleep has much improved. Worth looking into OP as it can have long term health implications if not dealt with.

Sleeplessinseattle234 · 19/01/2024 08:55

Used to. But since taking iron supplements and not drink past 6.30 pm. I don’t anymore. Those two alone have changed how I sleep.

MermaidEyes · 19/01/2024 08:58

Yes pretty much every night. Usually have to go to the toilet at least once despite drinking very little in the evening. Hello peri menopause 🙄

MyheartgoingBoomBoomBoom · 19/01/2024 08:59

I do, often wake between 2-3am but I’m finding since getting the Calm app and listening to their night time stories each night I seem to be sleeping through recently (albeit with weird dreams but that’s not unusual for me!).

CrunchyCarrot · 19/01/2024 09:03

Yes always wake at least once, have been like this all my life. However sometimes now I will wake more often and that's disruptive. Probably associated with various health issues I have.

namechange1986 · 19/01/2024 09:09

I wake up around 3 times a night every single night. Often it can be closer to 5/6.

I find it hard to imagine falling asleep and then waking up when the alarm goes off.

ObliviousCoalmine · 19/01/2024 09:21

It's extremely rare that I sleep through. Not sure why, might just be habit. Sometimes it's for a wee because I take a lot of medication (and water) before bed, other times I've no idea why.

It made me less ragey about children not 'sleeping through'; I don't, so I'm not sure why I would expect them to 🤷🏼‍♀️

dontforgetme · 19/01/2024 09:25

I don't think I've slept through the night in years. I'm up at least 4 times a night for a wee. I have tried not drinking past a certain time in the evening but then I have awful headaches and still wake up!

ErrolTheDragon · 19/01/2024 09:32

I usually wake a bit in the night - sometimes need the loo, sometimes too warm, sometimes no obvious reason. And then it'd often feel like I'd been awake a lot, but when I started wearing my Apple Watch and looking at the sleep app, it usually shows the awake times as being short. I'd been dubious about tracking my sleep but the reality was actually better than I thought so contrary to my expectation it's made me more relaxed about it.

Morningmeeting · 19/01/2024 09:52

Six times is a lot OP. Something is going on.

Some people get restless legs, or there is a name for something similar which means your muscles twitch as you try to sleep and it wakes you up ( PMLD or something like that). You may not be aware this is happening.

sharptoothlemonshark · 19/01/2024 09:58

Some of this may be epigenetic - if your mother or mother's mother lived through a period of extreme danger then her decedents will be primed to be more vigilant at nights - this is common in the decedents of holocaust survivors, for example.

Epigenetics makes you more suited to the environment your mother/ mother's mother/ mother's mother's mother lived in

sharptoothlemonshark · 19/01/2024 09:59

I differ from a lot of other posters on here- I consider it a bad night if I sleep through, and have not had any wakeful time to enjoy the experience of being cosy and resting in bed!

Octavia64 · 19/01/2024 10:01

I usually wake at least twice.

I have chronic pain though and usually just get up and take painkillers.
