Why don’t we have coupon offers like America does?

Watched Queenpins the other day and really enjoyed it but it made me wonder why we in the Uk don’t get decent coupon offers?

I mean we don’t even get BOGOF anymore

Haha I watched jr earlier and was thinking the same!

AllAroundMyCat · 16/01/2024 20:02

I've often wondered that.

I'd love to have the opportunity to buy £500 worth of shopping and pay £3.50 but it does look like very time consuming work and where do you put it all?

That being said, we hardly get any coupons at all. Mostly what's in supermarket magazines or from the till which are usually useless or have a very short use by date.

Soubriquet · 16/01/2024 20:06

It does look very time consuming but I suppose it works out in what you save

No coupon offers? Then why is it I am always behind someone at the Tesco's checkout who has thousands of the fuckers? Grin

bobomomo · 16/01/2024 20:10

You don't want it - yes there's bargains but it means that unless you are on the ball you boat far more. They up all the prices to cover the special offers basically

Silverbirchtwo · 16/01/2024 20:10

Lots of coupons, clubcard deals, etc on Tesco or Sainsburys. Also these save when you log in through other things, not tried them but some look Ok.

Silverbirchtwo · 16/01/2024 20:13

To get good coupons you also have to starve your supermarket, don't go to Sainsburys for a while and you will get better vouchers, also Tesco, swap between for weeks until you get good offers.

Userob · 16/01/2024 20:19

I'm sure we used to have them then loyalty card schemes came in and made them pointless

Extrasprinklesplz · 16/01/2024 20:57

There are some ok coupons sometimes just that you usually can't use more than 1 at a time as you can in the US, so lots of vouchers end up not being used

Coldupnorth7 · 16/01/2024 21:06

Lidl have coupons on the app.

Bubbleohseven · 16/01/2024 21:10

I remember being skint in my early twenties and always taking the coupons out of magazines in the doctors surgery

Used to save loads.

SecondUsername4me · 16/01/2024 21:10

I love that the American businesses are idiotic enough to still apply the full coupon value even if the item is lower.

$2 off toothpaste, but the toothpaste is on sale for $1 but you still get the full $2 off the basket.

Ridic.

strawberry2017 · 16/01/2024 21:11

Because here they put limits on coupons to stop people acting crazy and hoarding ridiculous amounts of products they don't need or use.

SecondUsername4me · 16/01/2024 21:12

Most British homes wouldn't even have the space for the storage the Americans use on their supplies.

And what are they hoarding it for?? It just smacks of "I'm alright jack"

Mudflaps · 16/01/2024 21:44

I watched a programme a few years ago, I think it was called Extreme Coupons or similar and the one thing I remember is thinking the food the woman had bought using coupons was extremely unhealthy, highly processed, high sugar, long life stuff. She had a basement full of shelving stacked with crisps, fizzy drinks, dried mac and cheese, etc. The only thing I seen worth bothering with was detergent and suchlike. She was so proud of the money she was saving and how she was feeding her family but at no stage did I see any fruit or veg, no fresh meat either, any meat or veg was canned. Her husband was sick of trying to convince her to stop using coupons and to buy less and to improve the food they were giving their children but I doubt she changed.

TheChosenTwo · 16/01/2024 21:54

As @Mudflaps said, I’ve only seen extreme couponing before and everything they bought looked nutritionally dreadful. Not sure I’d be interested in 12 giant boxes of biscuits, 40 boxes of cereal and 20 gallons of highly sugary juice.
I Also wouldn’t have space to store any of it!

idontlikealdi · 16/01/2024 21:54

There are but you need to dedicate serious time to it. The extreme couponers dedicate serious time to it.

BoohooWoohoo · 16/01/2024 21:57

On Extreme Couponers they use the overage to pay for meat etc
Many of them donate what they “buy” and the voiceover often say that they spend 6 hours doing their shop. I am fascinated by it all.

Pushkinini · 16/01/2024 21:58

Fifteen or so years ago Tesco would take any coupons, even if you didn't buy the item, as long as one of their stores sold it. One Christmas I saved coupons from magazines for months, bought bundles of coupons on eBay and saved all my club card vouchers. My Christmas food shop was reduced from nearly £250 to around £20. Shame they clamped down on that.

Morrowwind · 16/01/2024 22:00

Thats what the uk needs, the type of coupons that they have in the Us of A

lljkk · 16/01/2024 22:05

I hate hate hate coupons, loyalty cards, reward schemes, the lot
All a scam
Just give me a shop that has good quality goods at competitive prices

I don't want to deal with special offers on select goods on my app (something I have to hunt to even find on the shelves). I don't want to faff finding an app or a thing to scan or remembering my phone.

Just give me competitive prices on decent quality items

I have form for selecting the special discount items, paying at check out, and then forgetting my special coupon. 5 seconds later I regard the very long line I cannot bear to get back into, to save 50p, and I'm looking at goods that only ended up in my bag because of the "special loyalty members price!"

So I have been manipulated conned scammed screwed over royally

So ridiculously stupid. Cannot being to say how hostile I am to loyal shopper schemes

Madeupballs · 16/01/2024 22:10

Yes. Bloody Waitrose, where I have spent tons, offered me 50p off one loaf. Easily the most awful loyalty scheme ever.

You're right. Not having that faff is part of why Aldi are cheaper. The Clubcard and Nectar card prices inflate the price for non card holders. They are the ones who pay for the discounts.

There's a lot of fulfillment required in the background for the old style coupons and it's not worth it for retailers.

BoohooWoohoo · 16/01/2024 22:20

@Morrowwind Just watched the video. It’s fascinating stuff
