Are Nespresso machines worth it?

I'm looking for a very slim coffee machine for a teeny tiny kitchen.

My Lavazzo frother was so easy to use but I did find it annoying in the morning when DH and I are both making coffee. It's broken recently so not sure whether to get something fancier-ish or stick to Lavazzo.

Budget of about £70

You can go to the Nespresso counter and try the coffee, see if you like it. It will depend on what your coffee taste is. It’s a simple capsule machine - not a professional £1000 espresso machine. You can also check the prices of the coffees, and see if you would be happy with that.

Neither of us are coffee snobs at all, but we just can't stand the sachets!

Love mine and the milk frother - love vanilla flavoured pods on Ocado 10 for £3

TheMoreYouKnow · 15/01/2024 20:10

I have one but it takes supermarket equivalent pods too so have more choice to find what you like. Some of the latest Nespresso models have really big pods which aren't supermarket compatible. Mine does espresso and lungo sizes. Can't compare to Lavazzo as have ever had this one but I love it esp as it takes up so little room.

toomuchfaff · 15/01/2024 20:14

bear in mind with nepresso, ongoing cost for pods, about £6 for box 10 coffee pods... my nepresso order for the month is about £50... if budget is an issue, don't buy the pod machine with expensive pods. There are some pods that are £13 a box... for 10 pods... and that's without trying it. I have boxes I don't like.. blught and eugh

tigerinthejungle · 15/01/2024 20:17

Does anyone find that theirs isn't exactly hot from the off?

fatandhappy47 · 15/01/2024 20:19

Love our Nespresso vertuo BUT you can only get the pods online

DixiePeach · 15/01/2024 20:19

we bought a l’or barista when our nespresso broke. Really pleased with it and can use the Aldi pods in it.

Sofabum · 15/01/2024 20:19

If you want pods then check out wonky coffee. They send you pods that are dented and would otherwise go to landfill.

Sodndashitall · 15/01/2024 20:22

I adore mine. Its the older style smaller pods and I just have the coffee but no frother etc and it sits nicely on my counter takes v little space.
I get the nespresso pods myself probably spend less than £20 a month for my 2x coffees a day plus various visitors. But you can buy reusable or compostable pods too so there's a good choice. They are out of patent basically so that's why but the big ones are not so only available from Nespresso.

Bonus feature includes your DC can easily make coffee for you as it's not as dangerous as a kettle and more fun!

We fill our cups with just boiled water to warm them while the machine switches on and warms up. That way the coffee seems to be the right temperature for us. I believe with the older (not vertuo) machines removing the last pod and running just water through on a lungo setting to then discard means the next cup run through is warmer.

TwigTheWonderKid · 15/01/2024 20:26

Would never feel comfortable supporting a company as dodgy as Nestle but we love our little Lavazza machine. The coffee is excellent and the pods are compostable.

cofffeeeeeeeee · 15/01/2024 20:27

Hmmm the heat and the cost is slightly offputting to me. There's a Vertuo on Amazon currently for £69 vs a Dualit frother for £53...

We have the older Nespresso coffee machine and the vertuo. I prefer the vertuo, as the coffees are bigger. I’m not fussed that you can’t get pods for it from other companies, as with the original machine all the ones we tried (and we tried lots) weren’t nearly as good as the Nespresso pods. It’s the packs of pods that take up a lot of space.

Sodndashitall · 15/01/2024 20:32

I've never had a temperature issue and have had 2 machines now (old style pods). Definitely the vertuo pods are a lot more expensive

swapcicles · 15/01/2024 20:40

If you get a lor machine it takes old style Nespresso pods available in loads of places and their own XL pods too.
I use mine everyday 😊

ElisabethZott · 15/01/2024 20:40

I’ve bought the small Nespresso machine and I love the simplicity of it after a using a Smeg coffee machine for years. Can I highly recommend the John Lewis milk frother ? It produces the best silky/ frothy milk I’ve ever had

Doyouwantmejusttogo · 15/01/2024 20:44

We have a small one as DH just wants a quick coffee in the morning, we use ground coffee at the weekends. It does the job, quick and easy. He only drinks black coffee though.

My nespresso machine takes supermarket pods…£1.80 for 10 at Aldi (think they used to be £1.49!)…taste great!

grumpypedestrian · 15/01/2024 20:53

I’ve yet to be convinced these machines are better than a simple Aeropress.

Toomuchleopard · 15/01/2024 20:59

I’ve got the Nespresso Vertuo Next machine. I got it for about £70 with 200 free pods a couple of years ago. The coffee is great and it’s quick and easy to use. You have to buy the pods online and you can send the empty pods back for recycling for free. However you have to heat the cup up first or it’s not hot enough. I also heat the milk in the microwave. It’s a bit of a pain but worth it in my opinion.

Sauvignonblanket · 15/01/2024 21:18

I love mine - and the milk frother it came with. I get compostable compatible pods from Grind by post to go with.

HideTheCroissants · 15/01/2024 21:29

We love ours. We have a vertuo machine so have to get the Nespresso pods but we have a Nespresso “boutique” nearby in Bluewater so can get them there as well as online. DH and I both like different coffee types as well as switching to decaf versions in the evening so a pod machine is perfect for us. The pods are aluminium which is recycled. We find it plenty hot enough too.

If you know anyone with a Nespresso account they can get money off the machine for you.

Growlybear83 · 15/01/2024 22:06

I love my Nespresso Pixie and have got one downstairs and another in my office upstairs. I bought a Vertuo machine a couple of years ago but got rid of it because of the poor selection of pods available. I can only drink decaffeinated coffee and Nespresso only make a very limited range, but there are so many compatible capsules available and I usually buy Illy, Cru cafe, or Lavazza pods. I don't think I've ever paid more than £3 for a pack of 10 pods and just buy whichever are on special offer at ocado or Waitrose.

I've heard people complaining about coffee not being hot enough with some machines but it's not a problem I've had with mine. I believe that there is a way of increasing the temperature of the coffee.

Knitgoodwoman · 15/01/2024 22:11

Do nespressos do lattes or flat whites? My friend’s just did americano style so you still needed to add milk.
My Dulce gusto machine does a pod of flat white, or I can do a cappuccino with it. Without needing to add milk and it’s frothy.
