Are Nespresso machines worth it?

I'm looking for a very slim coffee machine for a teeny tiny kitchen.

My Lavazzo frother was so easy to use but I did find it annoying in the morning when DH and I are both making coffee. It's broken recently so not sure whether to get something fancier-ish or stick to Lavazzo.

Budget of about £70

I warm the milk/cup in the microwave while the machine is heating up. Works well. Mine is the basic, older style- very slim and neat.

TBH I think a new frother would probably be better value for money.

If there's a way of increasing the temperature I'd love to know. I also don't like the plastic so have ended up having a break from ours . I do have reusable pods but it's a bit fiddly so I've gone back to a cafetière mostly

I would go with the L'or machine. You can still use the old style Nespresso capsules. I bought a vertuo machine but found ordering the capsules annoying and I had to return the machine as it was leaking underneath. Hence the swap to L'or.

We have a Nespresso Vertuo and really love it - genuinely find getting coffee at most cafés underwhelming now as the coffee we have at home is so good! DD uses espresso pods to made her iced lattes and I use the bigger ones for my morning americano. We also have a milk frother for cappuccinos.

I know that only being able to buy the pods direct from Nespresso bothers some people but honestly for us the quality is worth the slight extra cost. We have a Nespresso store nearby so just pop in whenever we’re in town or you can very easily order them online, I believe they do rolling subscriptions too.

I like my Nespresso. I have one that takes the original pods, which means I can buy them elsewhere. I have subscriptions to a couple of places that (imo) do nicer (decaf) pods than Nespresso. They are anlso biodegradable to save on recycling. I also have a milk frother so I can do a cappuccino type thing.

custardlover · 15/01/2024 22:38

Absolutely love our Nespresso and get the pods from wonky coffee or Costco which is v cost effective

thinkfast · 15/01/2024 22:47

We used to have a nespresso but prefer our lavazza machine. Smaller range of pods, but the coffee is really lovely.

Hmmm the heat and the cost is slightly offputting to me. There's a Vertuo on Amazon currently for £69 vs a Dualit frother for £53...

Have a look on eBay- I got our Vertuo nespresso machine for £25 a few months ago and it’s perfect :)

So bad for the environment!
Buy a cafetière or a stovetop espresso maker and warm your milk/whisk it. Takes 2 minutes.

Does anyone find that theirs isn't exactly hot from the off?

I love mine. But l always warm the cup with one shot of hot water (and discard) first.

l don’t think it’s to do with the water temperature, but the cup being cold. Most big commercial coffee machines in cafes have cup warmers for that reason.

Moonsoutagain · 16/01/2024 07:59

I have the L'or one too. Love it and their coffee. I get 10 boxes of their pods for £25 on Amazon. You can use other brands too though.

jay55 · 16/01/2024 09:42

I have one, it's fine. But I only have one coffee a day. And live alone, it's always a faff to make coffeee for others.

If it ever breaks I'll go back to a moka pot.

@PrawnDumplings Considering all of the Nespresso branded pods are aluminium and fully recyclable within their scheme I think you’ll find that you’re wrong…

Floofydawg · 16/01/2024 13:02

No, they're completely shit. They break all the time and the pods are expensive. Get a bean to cup machine and buy fresh coffee beans instead - much better quality and cheaper in the long run.

But being able to recycle the pods doesn't cancel out the fact the aluminium needs to be mined in the first.place, pods manufactured and then recycled.

MaloneMeadow · 16/01/2024 16:45

@TwigTheWonderKid You could say that for pretty much everything we use in daily life. Materials have to come from somewhere. Coffee in itself isn’t environmentally friendly due to being imported from half way round the globe but where do you draw the line?

mylittleyumyum · 16/01/2024 16:46

I try not to support Nestle. It's not always easy because they are so damn insidious but the obviously named products are much easier to avoid.

Didsomeonesaydogs · 16/01/2024 16:57

We got our first Nespresso machine in 2010, and we love them. I've previously had a Gaggia, and I also have an Aeropress, but the Nespresso is just so much less faff.

We're total converts.

I buy pods from Sainos or Aldi, sometimes for as cheap as 99p/10, and never more than 22p each. I wouldn't buy a Vertuo-style machine for this reason.

My daughter even bought herself a Nespresso machine off FB marketplace for her uni house.

Yes, everything has an impact and it's not always obvious what the best choices might be but aluminium mining is pretty awful.
