Does anyone else feel rubbish about their weight?

ailbails · 13/01/2024 13:09

I follow a lot of influencers on Instagram and they mostly size 6 ,so thin and toned and it makes me feel rubbish but I can't stop following.
I'm 38 and I'm 5ft 7
I weigh 10 stone ,I would love to be 8 1/2 but it just seems like such a hard job.
My bmi is 21.9 at the minute
Ordered some size 10 jeans from Zara and they won't fasten
I'm normally a 10 or a small in most places but I just can't get these to fasten.
I'm feeling a bit rubbish
Anyone else the same boat ?

I know you say you can’t stop following them but you have to stop. It’s affecting your mental health.

Showmethefood · 13/01/2024 13:14

Yes. I’m a healthy weight too. But then I realise that this is where my body sits naturally. I could get thinner but I’d rather have the cake to be honest. I’m trying to get over it

Tayegete · 13/01/2024 13:15

I mean this kindly but please stop looking at instagram. My daughter was similar and she now has a bmi below 18 and is looking to lose more weight. 21.9 is a really healthy bmi. Weight can become such an obsession, If you can come off instagram, distract yourself and focus on some life goals you will feel a lot better about yourself.

wellhello24 · 13/01/2024 13:15

is this a wind up? Ffs you aren’t even overweight

WhatAFoolishFool · 13/01/2024 13:16

8.5 stone at 5’7 is a bit of a silly goal when you already have a healthy BMI? I’m 5’4 and 8.5 stone is a little lower than I’d like.

skippy67 · 13/01/2024 13:18

No, I'm really really happy with my weight. HTH.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 13/01/2024 13:19

Delete Insta and get a grip, seriously.

daisychainsaw7 · 13/01/2024 13:22

This thread will help no one

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 13/01/2024 13:24

This thread could be really triggering for those with eating disorders / recovering from eating disorders. Talking about wanting to lose weight when you are already a healthy weight is concerning OP. Do you have any symptoms of suffering from an eating disorder yourself?

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 13/01/2024 13:27

I’m 5’7 and weigh 10 stone and I think I look fit and healthy and slim.

I have zero interest in trying to be a size 6. Don’t follow influencers. If size 10 jeans don’t fit I buy size 12s. Sizing is so random anyway.

MotherofGorgons · 13/01/2024 13:29

I am on Insta. I only follow museums, art galleries, and bookstagrammers,, not vapid instagrammers. Job done.
I am your height and 10.7 stone, and pretty happy with the way I am.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 13/01/2024 13:30

Only if I ask the internet Mumsnet about it. Then I'd feel rubbish.

So I don't ask them.

I don't think that should he the OP's concern tbh. That someone else might find someone else's difficulty 'triggering' should not mean people have to self censor.

OP, my daughter is a size 6. She's 5' tall. She'd look ridiculous if she was 7 inches taller. She'd be way too thin!

Loads of Instagram type people filter and photoshop heavily.

Ther are a lot of posts of people showing the techniques they use to look a certain way in photos. They don't look like their photos every moment of every day in real life.

You say you can't stop following them but you can. You just need to choose to do it.

SuperMarioMaker · 13/01/2024 13:34

Delete the gram. Also probably delete MN. I don't think this place has particularly healthy attitudes towards weight either.

You are a healthy weight. You aspire to be under weight. What is you life lacking that you believe would be achieved by making yourself smaller and taking up less space?

AuntieMarys · 13/01/2024 13:35

Why do you care about influencers???,

ailbails · 13/01/2024 13:37

I only real follow them as I love fashion and outfit /makeup ideas
When I was younger I was a size 8 and think looking back at photos made me feel a bit meh
No I don't have any history of any eating issues
I love food
Love a takeaway Etc
Just seeing all the insta lot made me feel a bit shitty today

Been there and was bloody miserable. Lost too much weight and still hated my body. Life is too short and I love my food, so I'll continue to enjoy it. I have a simular bmi to you and know that it's irrational to start thinking that way again.

Cas112 · 13/01/2024 13:39

Yep

But you need to stop following these people it's not realistic and it doesn't nothing but make you feel worse about yourself

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 13/01/2024 13:41

I'm 5ft 8 and lookwd awful when I dropped to 10st. Granted, it fell off as it was an awful few weeks of my life but I now know that at my height, 10st is far too low a weight. I'd rather be heavier, strong and toned these days.

mynameiscalypso · 13/01/2024 13:42

I'm the same height. 8.5 stone is borderline underweight. As you get older in particular, it's much healthier to be in the middle/towards the higher end of a 'normal' BMI. If you want to change your shape, incorporating strength training (and eating more) is the way to go.

rainbowunicorn · 13/01/2024 13:44

You are no where near being overweight. Just stop following all the influences most if what they put up is heavily edited. Take up a new hobby or something to take your mind off it. Take a look around you, I can guarantee you won't see very many people that look like these influences in real life.

Sounds like you should delete the influencers and find other ways to get ideas.

But aside from that… i did find that regularly exercising has helped me appreciate my body for its strength, and made me feel more toned. I only do exercise that I enjoy and I don’t do masses but it does make me feel good.

OldTinHat · 13/01/2024 13:59

You sound young.

I'm 5'7.

23 inch waist, size 6, weight 7st.

Had children, settled around a size 12, weight about 9st. Ballooned during pregnancy to 12 stone with both DC, popped back to 9st easy afterwards.

Now, still 5'7, size 20 and heading to 17 stone at age 52, weight started increasing in early 40s due to peri and medication.

Just enjoy who you are. You'll look back one day and think why didn't I appreciate how beautiful I looked?! You're gorgeous.

BarryK3nt · 13/01/2024 14:18

To add a different perspective- I am the same height as you. I have been 10 stone once in my life and I felt huge. My weight now is around 8st 4 and I love it. Eat well and active job, go to the gym, lots of water etc. personally I think it’s easier to put some effort into getting the body that you want rather than wasting your life being unhappy with how you look, but that’s just my opinion.

retinolalcohol · 13/01/2024 14:36

I am 5'7 and 11 stone, and actively try not to lose weight (maintaining muscle mass for my hobby)

I don't see why you'd be trying to be so tiny anyway? I've been 9 stone before and my hair was thinning, I was always freezing, my mental health was in the toilet because I had to eat so little to maintain it.

If the influencers make you feel rubbish, unfollow them all. Or better still don't go on Instagram at all if it triggers you into this mindset. You're a healthy BMI and considering we're around the same height and I'm actually half a stone heavier than you, I can't see how you look overweight - I don't.
With kindness, it's all in your head
