Do I need to get my rings cut off ?

Hi
Yesterday I must have bumped my ring finger doing weights at the gym. My finger has swollen, but it isn't sore and I still have movement in it.
I phoned up NHS 24 but they didn't ask for a picture and just said I should go to a jewellers and get the rings cut off if I need to.

I'm going skiing abroad tomorrow and wondering if I should get them cut off just as it's the safest thing, but I'm not sure if it's needed and I can still move them - they are tight usually and finger has a bit of a groove.

I genuinely seem to be unable to get any further medical advice so A&E is out, the question is simply should I have the rings cut off today or not ?

Do I need to get my rings cut off ?

Oh I meant to say please and thank you for any advice Smile
I will be out for a bit but back in a couple of hours, and would go to jewellers in the afternoon if needed.

Ooof, I do not like the colour of that finger! And your rings look very tight.

I think I'd get them off, do they definitely need to be cut off? Have you tried the string trick?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 13/01/2024 08:57

Definitely get them taken off now - feet and fingers can swell more on flights.

Have you tried icing the finger ? With ice not frosting 🤣

Eccentricthesnowman · 13/01/2024 08:58

I would go and see can I get them cut off and if I can I would. If not, I would then be going to A&E. They are already swollen and imagine if they get worse while you’re up in the sky far away from anything that could take them off your fingers

rookiemere · 13/01/2024 08:59

I have put ice on the finger.
Thanks for replies so far.

Yes, get them cut off. The jeweller will be able to repair them so you can wear them again once the swelling's gone down.

LordyMe · 13/01/2024 09:01

Ouch, that looks very tight. Sorry no advice.

christmassausages · 13/01/2024 09:02

Google how to remove rings with dental floss or thread. It really does work. It will be sore when you're doing it but will save your rings (and your finger😄).

FireworksAndSparklers · 13/01/2024 09:03

You definitely need to get the rings off, but try with ice and soap and a clever technique with a ribbon before getting them cut off. That can be your last resort! I'll find a video of the clever technique... Hang on!

justforthisnow · 13/01/2024 09:03

It's too risky to get on a plane with them so swollen and tight, try the string trick and if not go to a jewellers

jannier · 13/01/2024 09:04

Yes then get them repaired, fingers swell on planes anyway. If it's not hurting that could mean it's worse than you think.

Azandme · 13/01/2024 09:04

They need to come off. I'd be concerned about the discolouration of your finger too.

I'd actually go to out of hours.

Cheesehound · 13/01/2024 09:05

Oh my - yes, get them cut off. I popped into Beaverbrooks recently to do the same. It took about two minutes.

Anjea · 13/01/2024 09:08

Dental floss and asap.

Jennalong · 13/01/2024 09:10

Try wrapping a ribbon tightly around your finger and easing your rings over them .
Or sometimes lubing up your finger can work.

Well if the ice didn't work, she could always then pop some icing on as a cheer up thing😂

BeadedBubbles · 13/01/2024 09:15

Yes - get them cut off

Bainbridgemews · 13/01/2024 09:17

Your finger looks like it could be broken. I did similar when skiing funnily enough and never got it looked at. It didn't hurt much and I skiied the rest of the week. Now that finger looks fatter and not like the rest of my fingers 1 years later - should have got it seen. Several doctors in my family have very quickly guessed which finger it was when I show them my hands and been pretty certain I broke it.

breakfastdinnerandtea · 13/01/2024 09:22

They definitely need coming off, 100%. Look at the difference in your fingers!
Would the string trick even work? The swelling is massive and it would be quite painful. Best to get them off one way or another, leave them off until the swelling has gone down, and then I'd take them off at the gym from now on.

JustAnotherKingCnut · 13/01/2024 09:23

Bloody hell!

I'd be running to the jewellers to get them cut off.

Literally running. Shock

DancefloorAcrobatics · 13/01/2024 09:23

Yes, get them cut off.
The colour of your finger is also worrying, I'd get it seen by walk in centre ot out of hours GP.

I would not waste time on soap or string techniques... you say that they were tight anyway, so it's time to get the re sized!

Glitterbiscuits · 13/01/2024 09:25

Try the dental floss trick first before you think about cutting the rings

I've done it and it works

FixTheBone · 13/01/2024 09:25

Just be really careful with the ice..... If the blood flow through the finger is being restricted, it'll be much more prone to frostbite if you put ice directly on it for any length of time.....

Mixed ice and water in a food bag is also safer as it limits the temperature to 0degs whereas plain ice cubes can be much colder.
