Do I need to get my rings cut off ?

Hi
Yesterday I must have bumped my ring finger doing weights at the gym. My finger has swollen, but it isn't sore and I still have movement in it.
I phoned up NHS 24 but they didn't ask for a picture and just said I should go to a jewellers and get the rings cut off if I need to.

I'm going skiing abroad tomorrow and wondering if I should get them cut off just as it's the safest thing, but I'm not sure if it's needed and I can still move them - they are tight usually and finger has a bit of a groove.

I genuinely seem to be unable to get any further medical advice so A&E is out, the question is simply should I have the rings cut off today or not ?

Do I need to get my rings cut off ?

Oh gosh, they need to come off asap 😕

Have you got a minor injuries unit by you? That's where I took DD when she broke her finger. They were able to x-ray it.

Dotchange · 13/01/2024 09:30

Good luck- get bigger rings if you do get them cut off!

Definitely go to a jeweller. You're risking the blood flow to your finger stopping and then you won't have a finger to put your rings on. Worst case scenario but don't risk it.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 13/01/2024 09:38

Christ, that does not look healthy!! I think the rings need to come off immediately, it looks like the blood is pooling in it and can't get out.

Some jewellers will cut off rings and they will do it in a place that is easiest to fix and won't disturb settings. The hospital will just chop it off whichever place is easiest.

I'd ring a few jewellers and see if they'll do it, if not, minor injuries / A&E if you don't have a miu/walk in.

But whatever you do, do it this morning, preferably right now!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 13/01/2024 09:39

I wouldn't do the string/ribbon thing either. That's fine on a normal finger, but one that's so completely swollen I'd be worried about doing some serious damage by trying to constrict it further with string.

JustExistingNotLiving · 13/01/2024 09:55

You need to have that ring off.
Just going by the colour and shape of your finger.

Please do it asap.

NextPrimeMinister · 13/01/2024 09:58

Yes, please get it cut off as soon as you can.

ColourMeBlue · 13/01/2024 09:59

Oh my,please get them removed. That finger does not look right at all

EffortlessDelegation · 13/01/2024 10:00

I'd get them cut off ASAP. Mine got inflamed with eczema once and nothing would get them off including the dental floss thing, and they were nowhere near that swollen.

ChanelQuiltedBag · 13/01/2024 10:02

Yes get them cut off. At a walk in centre if not the jewellers.

Klcak · 13/01/2024 10:02

I would mega lube that with fairy liquid and hope that the swelling might be a bit of mobile fluid, allowing the ring to slide off.

otherwise I would get them cut off asap, do not fly like that as flying causes more swelling

PamelaParis · 13/01/2024 10:05

JustAnotherKingCnut · 13/01/2024 09:23

Bloody hell!

I'd be running to the jewellers to get them cut off.

Literally running. Shock

Exactly! Baffling that someone would look at a finger like that and think "Hmmm, not sure what to do here, better ask the internet."

RosesAndHellebores · 13/01/2024 10:13

They need to come off. A good independent jeweller will do it in the most efficient way. It needs to be done asap, not this afternoon. Once done you need to tape up that finger.

I would get them cut if now before it gets worse I burnt my ring finger about 18 months ago and left it a day or two it got infected
When I went to A&E they struggled to cut them off and I was given something similar to gas and air for pain relief !
Thankfully they managed to get them off but it could have been a lot worse .

I say A and E but my nearest A&E has a minor injuries department too and that where my rungs were cut off.

x2boys · 13/01/2024 10:29

And ignore the posters telling you to piss around with bits if string 🙄

tomatoontoast · 13/01/2024 10:33

Nah I would leave them. They only look like they're cutting off your circulation.

Nothing major.

FannyFifer · 13/01/2024 10:33

U need those rings cut of ASAP, that is not a colour your finger should be.

MWNA · 13/01/2024 10:38

How extraordinary some people are not to have the basic confidence or knowledge to manage these sorts of things. I'm baffled at the ignorance.

I agree. Serious stupidity.

madeinmanc · 13/01/2024 10:41

I think this is one of the most worrying posts I've ever seen on here.

Your fingers and hand need urgent attention.

BaconAndAvocado · 13/01/2024 10:41

I'd say yes!
I had a similar situation from my dog yanking me on the lead.

The nurses tried so hard to get them off without damaging them but it was too painful.

Just be prepared....mine cost £450 to be repaired.

Do I need to get my rings cut off ?

BaconAndAvocado · 13/01/2024 10:42

Sorry for the 3 photos. Technophobe!

madeinmanc · 13/01/2024 10:43

You've only got this one body and two hands and ten fingers, rings are just objects and replaceable/repairable!
