RIP Annie. It is hard to remember what it was like when young female voices on the radio were rarer than hens teeth, but that’s how it was. You broke the mould Annie.

I just saw the news, she was such a groundbreaking person. RIP.

ApolloandDaphne · 12/01/2024 14:00

She was fabulous. RIP

Glitterbiscuits · 12/01/2024 14:04

Oh that's so sad.
I used to love her Sunday Night Requests show.
I had a couple of tracks played.

It felt a bit like being in a secret club

pickledandpuzzled · 12/01/2024 14:06

I was shocked. I thought she was much younger.

etmoiandme · 12/01/2024 14:07

Ah this is very sad, what an icon.

Glitterbiscuits · 12/01/2024 14:07

The Fish Head song!

And the one about salad that got a remix.

Night Owl of Croydon writing in every week.

weebarra · 12/01/2024 14:07

So sad! A real pioneer who paved the way for so many others. I hadn't realised she was in her eighties.

Ferraria · 12/01/2024 14:08

Ground breaking and a role model for women like me growing up at a time when it was all men on the radio. I thought she was so cool. May she RIP.

Jbck · 12/01/2024 14:11

I was also shocked at her age, real trailblazer!

LarkLane · 12/01/2024 14:13

Happy trails to you Annie, you were a legend.x

Aplaceinthecold · 12/01/2024 14:33

Brilliant DJ and loved her Sunday night show. Discovered Bjork on her show although she was in the Sugar Cubes then.
Can't believe she was 83, RIP you fabulous woman.

Oh, I'm so sad to hear this, she was my favourite DJ. I loved her Sunday night show - many of my favourite songs were ones I heard for the first time on there.

An absolute legend.

R.I.P. Annie, and thank you. Off to Spotify to play some tunes in your honour.

husbandmidlifecrisis · 12/01/2024 14:41

No way!

Loved fish heads! This had made me quite sad actually! She was awesome

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 12/01/2024 14:44

Loved Annie. She was a trail blazer for women in that industry. What a sad day.

Deathbyathousandcats · 12/01/2024 14:55

She was wonderful. RIP

BeaRF75 · 12/01/2024 14:57

I'm glad to see that people remember the Fish Heads song ("I took a fish head out to see a movie, didn't have to pay to get it in")!
Used to love Annie on Sunday afternoons when I was in my teens.

Jasmin1971 · 12/01/2024 15:09

Wonderful woman. Loved her radio show. She sometimes compered at Reading as well before it turned into a children's crèche. Rest in power , Annie x

mumda · 12/01/2024 15:18

She was 83!
How to make me feel old.

DPotter · 12/01/2024 15:23

The Sunday evening show was legend. Started listening to this in mid 1980s I think. Found so many musicians - Sinead, Bjork, Michelle Shocked to name but a few. Real wide range of styles, from different musical eras - wonderful. Loved the Compared and Contrast bit. And thanks for reminding me of Night Owl from Croydon!

Love you Annie - you will be missed ❤

Broadcast icon Annie Nightingale - Radio 1's first female DJ - has died, the BBC has said.

Nightingale, who was 83, started presenting on Radio 1 in 1970 and became its longest-serving broadcaster, hosting her show Annie Nightingale presents... until late last year.

She was awarded an MBE in 2002 and a CBE in 2020. In 2004, she became the first female DJ from Radio 1 to be inducted into the Radio Academy Hall of Fame.

So sad R.I.P Annie.🌺
