Time to put bleach down the toilets. Part of me sometimes feels sorry for those germs

Exactly that really. Gonna put bleach down the toilets before bed. Not been done since Sunday. Those germs are probably minding their own business not knowing the bleach is coming for them. Sometimes feel sorry for those little blighters.

DD used to feel sorry for the nits. She wanted to rehouse them and start a headlice colony.

It’s a great example of our brain’s preference for anthropomorphism. Also, I wonder if women do it more than men!

I’ve noticed children will create stories around objects- particularly girls. Give a boy toddler a brick and he goes brmm brmm and drives it around. A girl starts having a chat with it and sharing her drink.

Goodness knows why- some research suggest socialisation, regardless of how careful parents have tried to be about neutral gender roles.

I love this thread! My garden is currently a mess because I worry about all the insects etc who will be made homeless if I tidy it up!

All my house plants have at least one companion. Can't have them getting lonely! And I've realised i never leave a lone bean in the bottom of the tin.

LuluBlakey1 · 12/01/2024 13:33

I have those thought 😁

I noticed that domestos no longer says "kills all known germs - DEAD"

then I was thinking wow doesn't it? Are there germs unkillable by bleach? Then I scared myself so I thought of puppies instead

You're right actually they don't seem to use that slogan anymore do they. So Domestos joins the other bleaches at 99.9% germ kill. I wonder if the 0.01% germ tells the new germs about the previous bleach attack. That would perhaps mean the germs are perhaps indeed aware of potential bleach attacks 😯

Yes, all of this ^

Currently allowing 3 small spiders to stay who are guarding eggs sacs they laid around the garden door because I keep imagining the poor little baby spiders if I got rid of the egg sacs.

MissusKay · 12/01/2024 13:38

Don't worry - not all of the germs are killed and the ones that are left will continue to multiply.

(But there's really no need to send bleach down the toilet.)

My people!!!

Yes: weeds, single beans/peas, cuddly toys, clothes being taken to the clothing bank... and don't get me started if I accidentally kill a greenfly. 🫠

When I see an earthworm in daylight on a footpath I always pick it up and put it in a hedge or on the grass as I fear it's in danger of being stepped on or gobbled by a seagull or something 😆

Years ago I read somewhere that somebody made sure she got every single baked bean out of the tin because she worried about the odd baked bean that gets left at the bottom of the tin not fulfilling it's beany destiny and I think about that often.

I do this with sweetcorn, cant have any left out and staying in the tin!

Justanything86 · 12/01/2024 13:41

I've never understood the point of religiously disinfecting the toilet. Antibac the seat by all means but the bowl? I'm not planning to stick my hands in there or drink the water or anything so I'm not really sure what the issue is presuming it gets regularly flushed.
I particularly hate those bloo blocks - why would you want to add chemicals to every bit of water you use??

Emily1583 · 12/01/2024 13:43

spookehtooth · 12/01/2024 10:32

@Emily1583 i think the term weed is just ignorance about ecosystems, the effect of pollutants humans emit into them and the use of fertilisers 🤷‍♂️

The book wilding has an interesting example of what happened when they let a "weed" rip, much to the frustration of neighbouring land. Eventually the abundance attracted wildlife that feasted on it. I forget the fine details, but what it shows to me is humans don't understand natures timelines are different to humans, a year or even a few isn't long in the history of a landscape evolving naturally. What's even thousands or millions on a bit of rock this old? To change a landscape, without too much maintenance, you first have to understand it

Edited

I agree. Each plant and creepy crawly has their place and purpose.

Either the germs that survive are grief stricken at witnessing the slaughter of their germ buddies, or they mock the new weaker germs that sooner or later they will be killed.

I guess it's just intuitive really. Something passed down by seeing our mum's doing it. That and the bleach propaganda from cleaning companies adverts to kill kill kill. Maybe a bit of a power thing too. Dunno. I'm certainly more liberal than my mum who seems to bleach her loo most days from memory as opposed to my once or twice a week. My mum has even been known to put bleach down my loo when she pops round. The cheek of it. They are my germies and I'll decide when it's time for them to go.

The bleach cleared up whatever was at the bottom without me having to glove up and scrub when I moved into my house. It's not something I normally buy, I was using up what was left in the house. I'll probably try whatever I can from the"bring your own bottle" shops that should be eco .. just hope they do as good a job of keeping clean 🙏I don't care about germs, i do care about everything visible to the eye. I'd like to do without a loo brush too, they're a bit yuk & landfill once dead :-s

Never thought of the two types of Tic Tacs in one container as spouses. I bet there was always an odd number of one of the colours so you get a few of one colour with no spouse though.

There was! And sometimes there would be two greens or two oranges left and I would allow them to marry each other!

BogRollBOGOF · 12/01/2024 16:17

I might be known to mow around the daisies. And make sure every single bean makes it out of the can on their mission to get served up on to the plate.

1Week · 12/01/2024 17:41

That's so 8nteresting. It's like they learn their lives will be short

Yep weeds are harshly done by. Who decided what's a weed and what's a flower?

Exactly!

Daisy's should definitely be taken off the weed list. They are too pretty to be put in the same category as stinging nettles.

Also, cuddly toys or any toy animal. If you pick it up, you must buy it.

They're little faces when you walk away. Kills the fuck out of me.

Vitriolinsanity · 12/01/2024 19:55

Also, what about the lost glove.

No more hand to hold and warm.

It's purpose has gone.

SamBeckettslastleap · 12/01/2024 20:00

Stinging nettles are beautiful, they flower and host caterpillars, they can be made into shampoo, wine and tea.

I also can't hurt a soft toy and once when I was a v poor student spent my week's food money on a sad looking bear. I've forgotten the hunger bit still have the bear.

I like MN, you realise you are more normal than you thought

Emily1583 · 12/01/2024 20:01

The worst ones are the Facebook posts in local groups with parents seeking help find a child's list cuddly toy 🙁

And yes lost gloves. Not only does the glove lose their owner but the remaining gloves inevitably gets binned too.

I wear odd gloves for a reason OP.
