Do you recycle?

I recycle less these days as im just not convinced it makes much difference.

I rarely eat fish and meat as I think maybe that makes a difference?

DustyLee123 · 11/01/2024 21:46

Yes I do. Every little helps.

LightSwerve · 11/01/2024 21:47

Yes, of course.

Justcallmebebes · 11/01/2024 21:51

Yes, although I've just learned that putting til receipts in the recycling is a no no.

Starting to get a bit disillusioned with it all tho after learning what actually happens to my carefully recycled items

JamMakingWannaBe · 11/01/2024 21:52

Absolutely. My Council doesn't collect soft plastic packaging so I sort that separately and take it to Tesco's when I'm doing a big shop. There's very very little in my normal rubbish bin.

Of course it helps. If your Council is still landfilling waste, all your glass and metal packaging is being dumped and raw materials are required to be mined, at an environmental cost, to create brand new packaging.

Recycling should be compulsory. It's not exactly hard to do, or costing you any more to do it.

dementedpixie · 11/01/2024 21:54

Yes we do as we have 4 wheelie bins so may as well use them

MenorcaMarguerite · 11/01/2024 21:54

Yes, I recycle and I compost. And get milk deliveries so it's reusable glass.

It's not much but it's something. Why wouldn't you? It's hardly time consuming.

parietal · 11/01/2024 21:55

Yes of course. council collects the recycle bin every week but the black trash only every 2 weeks. if it all went in black trash bags, there wouldn't be enough capacity.

plus it is the right thing to do.

ThePoshUns · 11/01/2024 21:57

Yes religiously and try to avoid buying single use plastic

dementedpixie · 11/01/2024 21:58

3 of my bins only get collected every 3 weeks (general waste, plastic/glass and paper/card) and the food waste is only every 2 weeks so I wouldn't fit everything in just 1 bin

thefallen · 11/01/2024 21:58

Yes, because I'm not a lazy ignorant selfish cunt.

Needmorelego · 11/01/2024 21:59

I would love to recycle but I live in a flat with large communal dumpster bins - which are also accessible to non residents - and they are constantly filled up with any old rubbish that's not been sorted properly. As a result the contents of the so called recycling bins have to landfill.
There are very few public recycling bins now because they've been removed. Why? Because people were putting incorrect items in the different bins and/or fly tipping other crap next to the bins. I also couldn't really get to them as I don't have a car and I can't really carry all my recycling up to where the bins were.
Basically....I would if I could but the facilities are not available or accessible to me.
🙁

Tollo · 11/01/2024 21:59

I recycle what i can via the home recycle bin, my council doesn’t do glass or food waste bins and they only come every two weeks so sometimes recycling has to go in the normal bin if there’s no room in the recycling one.

Cotswoldbee · 11/01/2024 22:00

Yes, make sure everything that can be recycled is in the correct bin, also try to reduce waste in the first place (reduce, reuse, recycle).
If the recycling isn't processed correctly after it has left my bin, that is completely out of my control but I will always do what I can.

angelcake20 · 11/01/2024 22:01

Yes, and I'm horrified by how many people don't. It's not complicated.

Notsonifty50 · 11/01/2024 22:03

Yes, of course. We recycle everything that we can. Our recycling is collected once a fortnight and the bin is rammed. We take plastic bags/wrapping to Tesco. We could probably go six weeks before we fill our general waste wheelie bin though.

idontlikealdi · 11/01/2024 22:07

Yes always. We're on three weekly rubbish collections, we can't not recycle.

nowthelighthasgone · 11/01/2024 22:17

Yes I do of course but I'm not religious about it, life's too short especially when half the damage to the planet is being done by countries like China etc.

TheThingIsYeah · 11/01/2024 22:22

Yes, but I'm not convinced it doesn't end up in a landfill abroad.

Hellostrawberries · 11/01/2024 22:26

I'm the same as you OP, I do a bit less these days after reading so much about how little difference it makes. For a start, it's fairly common knowledge that most brown bin rubbish ends up in landfill anyway as it's too hard to sort. Then there's the fact that the UK produces less than 1% of the world's carbon emissions. So even if the UK stopped producing any waste whatsoever it wouldn't have any impact on the environment. I get the notion of every little helps. But this is a case of rearranging the deckchairs on the titanic.

Hermittrismegistus · 11/01/2024 22:31

Yes I recycle. I feel quite bad when I have to put soiled cardboard etc into the general waste.

Fifthtimelucky · 11/01/2024 22:38

We recycle far more than we throw away. We have less than one bin bag a fortnight in our normal rubbish.

Paper, cardboard, tins, glass and plastic food containers go in our recycling bin. Waste food is collected once a week, but I have very little as most waste food is stuff like vegetable peelings and banana skins which go on my compost heap.

I take soft plastic and old batteries to the supermarket and take any old clothing, furniture, electrical items or household items to the tip for recycling (unless they are good enough for the charity shop).

RocketIceLollie · 11/01/2024 22:40

I just do it out of habit to be honest. Waste goes in bin, recyclables go in recycling. Never think much of it to be honest.

JellyfishandShells · 11/01/2024 22:53

Yes - I criticise our local council for some things but their waste and recycling is an excellent service. Weekly glass/plastic, paper/cardboard, food waste, garden waste ( last one payable) and black bag for what is left . It’s convenient and reliable.

They also have a well run big recycling centre for everything else and lots of medium sized bins scattered around the borough.

Unwanted good clothes and saleable items to charity shop - one of the shops will also take unsaleable clothes ie stained/worn out if bagged up and labelled as rags.

There were some big recycling bins at our local Sainsbury’s, which were well used but they’ve disappeared due to ‘ customer feedback and demand’ which makes no sense. They were well out of the way in a huge car park.

justasking111 · 11/01/2024 23:08

Have done for years in Wales. Non recyclable collection every four weeks. Garden waste fortnightly, the other four recyclable bins weekly

likopo · 12/01/2024 00:41

Yes I do mainly because the bin bags for our Brabantia bin are expensive so it's cheaper to fill up the free recycling bags! But I'm quite lazy about it and don't rinse everything and probably chuck some packaging in that shouldn't be there. We don't have to sort recyclables, it goes into one bag/box. Everything gets collected weekly and there's no limit to how much can be collected. I don't collect food waste as I don't want bugs crawling in it (and have a paved garden so no point having my own compost bin) and I tend to sell off old clothes rather than donating.
