Strange eBay seller

garlicandsapphires · 11/01/2024 19:34

Browsing eBay for a stretchy tube skirt, I found an ordinary Dorothy Perkins one for…£288.88
I assumed it was a typo but looked at their other items for sale and most of them are also £288.88 - but these are VERY ordinary things, supermarket clothing, jeans, asos…

You can make an offer but just wondering what on earth is the point of listing things for £££. The seller has good feedback so it obviously works. What does it mean??

Either a typo. They've used an automatic upload tool and it's made an error. They could also not have the item in stock (if they're a business seller or shop) but they are just keeping the advert 'live' and will adjust the price back to what people will pay when they have it back in stock. Lots of business sellers do that.

garlicandsapphires · 11/01/2024 19:42

But ALL their items are ludicrously overpriced, like an ordinary leather belt for £2,088.88 - always with the four eights!

I bet its a porn thing

eBay charges them to take a break. So they've probably just put it to a silly price noone will buy when they're wanting a break for whatever reason. Some do it waiting for stock

Dveos · 11/01/2024 20:25

eBay does not charge to take a break.

garlicandsapphires · 11/01/2024 22:10

I think the simplest explanation is that this person is successfully selling bog standard clothes for hundreds of pounds each. And that they like the number 8.

Some people use magic numbers in their ebay listings. I'm not pulling your leg, this is actually a thing.
8888 is an 'angel number'.

floralminimalist · 11/01/2024 22:20

Money Laundering?

terriblyangryattimes · 11/01/2024 22:22

I'd be so curious I'd message and ask them. There must be a logical explanation

easilydistracted1 · 11/01/2024 23:03

@Dveos ah I heard that somewhere maybe it was Amazon. As it happens on there too. Very strange then

Falkenburg · 12/01/2024 01:16

The seller is lil miss luscious!

I thought this too.

catotangent · 12/01/2024 02:24

Reminds me of that thread a few years ago. The seller was selling seemingly random bits of rubbish like coupons and safety pins. I can't remember what it all meant but the thread was deleted for his privacy.

ttcat37 · 12/01/2024 02:26

There’s actually a simple answer. I once asked a seller doing this as I was so curious! He said that he does it when eBay gives him free listing/ no commission offers. He may not have anything major to sell at that time but lists something just to take advantage of the offer. Then if he gets something he wants to list he just edits the listing with the right item etc. You can keep changing the end date of the listing as long as nobody bids.
The number 8 is the luckiest number in Chinese culture which may explain everything ending in 8.

sukesuke · 12/01/2024 06:48

I comment as someone who’s done this in the past and it’s nothing to do with money laundering. When selling multiple items of the same style,I would increase the price to a ridiculous amount when I had run out of stock and was sure I’m awaiting more stock. The way the eBay algorithms work is that a listing will build up views and the viewing position in the searches the longer it stays live and with some sales. So if the listing was to end due to no stock then the seller would lose all the views and interests gained on that listing then have to start from the go again when relisting. When new stock arrives then it’s just a matter of changing the price to its true value.

There was someone on eBay who sells misshapen Haribo sweets for silly money, like £1000s. Apparently they're 'rare'. Probably someone who works in the factory!

Amazon also don’t charge to take a break.

TheWorldisGoingMad · 12/01/2024 10:37

Report them to eBay for suspicious activities. Money laundering and scams are rife on eBay now. I've been eBay since 1995, and have noticed a huge change. You have to be very careful, and thoroughly check their feedback. I don't sell yo or buy from anyone with a feedback of 50 positive buying/selling transactions. This is DAF!

That's genuinely interesting, thanks for the fact.

I also wonder (eek) if some listing are sort of for pervs (slightly worn clothing etc).

There's also the scam where they intentionally send something defective and hope a certain percentage of people won't bother to return even with full paid for postage.

Love Ebay but some weirdness also.

I remember that. There was some speculation that there was a BDSM type humiliation thing going on - why else would they do it?!

And yes you get the used shoes sellers.

The Haribo one is brilliant Grin
