Poland weather-snow???

Pinkballetfrog · 10/01/2024 19:33

I am due to go to Poland next week. I checked the weather and it's -11.

I am somewhat prepared with a wool jumper and socks and hat.

I am anxious about shoes. I have runners but I think they might not be suitable for snow/ice.

Should I get a hiking boot/shoe for the trip? Something with a good grip at the end of the shoes? I won't be able to bring spare shoes due to baggage allowance. Would shoes be hard to break into now? I have wool socks.

These are great. Warm and pretty weatherproof. Good grip.

The other ones I’ve had in the past for city/snow scenarios were a pair of boots by el naturalista.

Both of these options were pretty indestructible imo.

I love ECCO but it's out of my budget.

I don't usually wear boots. I never thought about boots. I was thinking about hiking shoes with a grip.

@Pinkballetfrog I just got back from Krakow yesterday! I was wearing my regatta hiking boots which are waterproof and not slipped plus they kept me warm. Sometimes I doubled up with socks and other times I wore one pair of my thick socks. Also wore uniglo winter jacket and a body warmer (together!) and a scarf. Would have liked some gloves too but totally forgot to bring mine.

And it was minus 15 in Krakow this week! I did some sightseeing so did do a fair bit of walking over the few days I was there but also sometimes used warm Ubers etc to get around 😆

I got these when I went last year. Decathalon have some good alternatives too.

I live in Scandinavia where we've had a long cold snap. My teenager obv has not changed what he's wearing because of some stupid weather. If your partner wants to look like a feckless sullen eejit of a teenager in trainers, let him. He won't be the first. Just warn him that if he spoils your trip with moaning about "I'm cold" you'll [insert consequence here]. He'll just have to practise his penquin walk a little extra.

That said, even my feckless eejit of a teenager puts on his warmest socks - he has both wool and Uniqlo Heattech. And when we were on the -15 to -20 mark the other week he wore his baselayer that we bought for skiing. As long as no-one could see it! So I'm saying that you can survive cold weather in trainers if you have warm socks.

We live somewhere snowy and cold in winter. Although we have snow boots for ‘off road’, my day to day boots for just walking a round town and driving are black timberlands. You can buy similar cheaper brands. But basically they are waterproof, grip, and warm enough if decent socks.

I wouldn’t bother with full on snow boots if you’re only staying in town and not going hiking, or skiing or into woodland walks. You can get similar to timberlands in Uk in somewhere like supermarkets or deichman like shown above.

Caspianberg · 11/01/2024 14:53

Something like these basic black boots from deichman will be fine and cheaper than Timberlands

Why are you mothering him so much? Just sort yourself out, and let him do his own thing, which he will anyway!

This!! He's an adult!

For me I like to wear men's shoes and boots because they provide more room in the toebox and they are comfier but thank you. I will look for a thimberland equilvant for mens, for me.

He's an adult but he's utterly unprepared for a trip that he booked and wanted to go on.

I don't want to see him get sick with the cold and slip and fall. I know he's an adult but I don't want to see him go down.

But you're treating him like a child!
He can book a holiday but can't buy appropriate clothes?
This isn't your problem.

Toomuch44 · 11/01/2024 16:40

You might get something suitable in Mountain Warehouse, they'll have sales this time of year. Just make sure they're waterproof.

Pinkballetfrog · 11/01/2024 17:53

Ok I found some boots but I can't decide what sole will be better for the snow and ice. Can you help me pick. For me.

Can you order both, try them on at home and return the pair you don't want?

coxesorangepippin · 11/01/2024 18:01

What about coats?

You need a parka style one, knee length, with a hood

lesdeluges · 11/01/2024 18:02

Ah, so he will refuse to wear snow grips, but you think he will wear a pair of boots that he doesn't know about and hasn't even looked at or tried on yet, and are totally not his style?

IJust suggest boots to him and emphasise the dangers of ice and snow in flat runners. Let him make his own mind up, and if he agrees, fine, if he doesn't well you haven't wasted your money.

Precipice · 11/01/2024 18:11

Do you have a good coat? Plus layers to be able to take on/off in respect of the conditions? Unlike a PP I wouldn't go for knee length unless you like knee length in general - I'm Polish and have never had a knee-length coat as far as my memory goes. Do get some tights you can wear under trousers though!

Definitely not runners (meaning trainers???) for Polish winter whether you get snow or not. I wouldn't wear them for a typical winter in the UK! (I did wear trainers sometimes this December, but it was very warm; I was going around without any coat at all.)

Pinkballetfrog · 11/01/2024 18:17

I am somewhat ok with gear. I have base layers, wool socks, legwarmers, shawls - this is all stuff that I like to wear anyways and I have a jacket too. It's not heavy or light but middle ground. It's windproof and waterproof and it has a hood but I need to find it (removable).

I am stuck on shoes.

Yes, by runners I mean trainers.

I can't afford the two options I linked to above. It's one or the other.

Pinkballetfrog · 11/01/2024 18:19

I like boot number 1 that I linked to a few posts ago above. Would that sole be good for snow/ice?
These boots are for me but I think I will have to encourage my man to get some boots too.

This. If he slips and falls cos he's wearing non gripped shoes or trainers, then it's his own fault.

Boots for yourself. I have the ones that look like doc martens from pavers. The ones I've got are patent and have what looks like a good grip on them too. However I haven't worn them in snow or ice so I don't know if they are any good, but one thing I will say is they are extremely comfortable, don't need breaking in and make walking in them pleasant. They are lined inside too so keep your feet nice and warm. I got mine in the sale so they were £40 as apposed to £80

lesdeluges · 11/01/2024 19:03

OP the boots you linked to are men's boots. Therefore I thought you were looking for and buying them for your DP not yourself.

I am toying with the idea of buying him boots for our trip away but I also need boots too and I only really wear men's shoes now. Men's shoes are better in size and width and more durable. I am looking for about for me and the ones I linked too above is my selection. I will figure out my Mr in time.
