How to humanely euthanise a mouse??

Tosieposie · 10/01/2024 14:35

Dcat has brought in a mouse. Then dropped it and ran.

It's been in a box for an hour but it's back legs or spine is broken.

I can't release it like that :(

Stamp on it.Sad

Tosieposie · 10/01/2024 14:43

Oh God.

I couldn't 😭

honestly the most humane way is to snap it's neck (pens are often used) but whether you feel you have that in you is another matter.

What yhe actual fuck 🤯 How is that humane. Keep it warm and comfortable amd take it to a local vet.

ScribeSev · 10/01/2024 14:44

Oh god that's brutal

But probably the quickest most humane way perhaps

Maybe a brick instead of your foot

Needs to be quick

Popskipiekin · 10/01/2024 14:45

Pop it in a bag. Get a brick. Bam. I had to do this. Poor mouse, anything better than being in agony from broken spine or legs.

Snowflakecookie1989 · 10/01/2024 14:46

I couldn't do it :( I'd have to drop it off to a vet and let them do it :(

TooBigForMyBoots · 10/01/2024 14:46

It's instant, but I get it isn't pleasant if you're squeamish. Keeping it alive any longer is needlessly cruel.

Tosieposie · 10/01/2024 14:47

I don't think a vet would be interested?

OP posts:
Tigertigertigertiger · 10/01/2024 14:49

A vet would absolutely not be interested

Moier · 10/01/2024 14:49

From a animal forum on line

How to humanely euthanise a mouse??
getofftheplane · 10/01/2024 14:49

It's already been suffering an hour. You need to drop something very heavy on it quickly.

The vet suggestion made me laugh out loud (countryside gal here who's been putting small rodents out of their misery since I was a kid)

Whataretheodds · 10/01/2024 14:49

Something quick - don't confuse squeamishmess with humanity.

cannaecookrisotto · 10/01/2024 14:51

Oh god I couldn't do it 😱. I'd feel horrible but vets won't be interested. I'd probably get DH to do it.

ChangeNameNameChange · 10/01/2024 14:51

If you have a car then pop it in a bag, line it up with your tyre and drive over it. Had to to it once before because the poor bugger was writhing in agony after being caught and mauled by my neighbours cat.

cannaecookrisotto · 10/01/2024 14:51

And leave the house whilst he did it.

As morbid as this is it made me laugh 😂.

I'd prefer to do this than stamp on it 100%.

BetteDavisChin · 10/01/2024 14:55

This is why I don't like cats.

RSPCA approved method for killing sick piglets on a pig farm is to hold it by its back legs and swing its head against concrete wall or floor.

Try that.

Sillybillypoopoomummy · 10/01/2024 15:08

get a pencil or a narrow pen.
Grab the mouse by the tail and put hte pencil behind its neck. Pull the body upright sharply by the tail -you should hear the neck break. Give it a wiggle to check it is broken - job done. By not killing it you are causing more suffering...

ButteryBiscuitBaseBiscuitBase · 10/01/2024 15:31

I had to do this with a bird my dc found in the garden that had been mauled by a neighbourhood cat. It was alive but obviously dying. I made the dc go away and then hit it with a hammer that we happened to have on the lawn.

WhatFlavourIsIt · 10/01/2024 15:34

Something heavy. Brick or shovel

DaftFlerken · 10/01/2024 15:43

absolutely a vet would deal with it. I have taken an injured bird before & they just give them a quick bit of gas in a box

KickMyAssIntoGear · 10/01/2024 15:45

A cat had injured a pigeon in our garden. A vet put it to sleep.

ButteryBiscuitBaseBiscuitBase · 10/01/2024 15:53

Surely taking it to a vet is just prolonging its misery though? It's quicker to just find a hammer.

DCINightingale · 10/01/2024 15:56

I'd take to a vet. I absolutely couldn't deal with it myself, although I agree a quick death is the best in these scenarios. I just couldnt. A vet would help you, I've taken several injured birds to our good vets and they have sorted it promptly and compassionately.
