How to humanely euthanise a mouse??

Tosieposie · 10/01/2024 14:35

Dcat has brought in a mouse. Then dropped it and ran.

It's been in a box for an hour but it's back legs or spine is broken.

I can't release it like that :(

@MissGroves how exactly do you keep a mouse with a broken back ‘comfy’??!

Like the mouse will think ‘ah, I’m safe here in this box with my broken bones causing agony. Everything will be fine now’………

Finishing it off is the kindest thing to do.

Snap the neck. Do you know anyone around you who studied medicine or did medical-related research at uni? Chances are they've killed lab mice so they can walk you through the method or come over and do it for you.

You can't take a mouse to a vet! It's not a pet. Smash it in, put it out of its misery. Bloody hell, people are so lily-livered these days.

At the vets where i work we will always take in wildlife ,euthanise anything beyond help and help anything else , we never charge .
There aren't many vets that would turn this away.

alwaysneedanap · 10/01/2024 16:52

Google euthanising with carbon monoxide - we have used this method with an elderly pet rat. It was more humane than being PTS by the vet. Basically you need vinegar and baking soda and a sealable box. They go to sleep quickly and don't wake up. Best of luck!

Once had a very sick (poisoned) rat in my garden that was dying slowly. I finished it off with a cricket bat.

Took a few goes unfortunately.

I am not squeamish usually but I could not stamp on a live mouse till it';s dead, or hit it with a brick. May be drop it out of a top floor window? I could just about do that I think.

Or give it back to the cat

One stamp is enough to crush its scull. I am the master of the one stamp kill. I put it in a bag first.

Aglets · 10/01/2024 16:59

Secateurs. (Long time rural living) quick and effective

QuestionableMouse · 10/01/2024 17:04

My Jack Russell makes quick work of them 😬

sagalooshoe · 10/01/2024 17:05

bring forth the (tiny) guillotine

Sounds like some mners be best off on The Dark Web than mn...
Ime it's better to leave the prey to dcat.... Poor thing.

Geneva12 · 10/01/2024 17:08

When we had an injured mouse my brother-in -law put it in a bag and hit it against a wall a couple of times.

Dontbeme · 10/01/2024 17:10

Feed it full fat cheese to raise it's cholesterol, leading to a fatal heart attack.
Or just a brick or whack of a shovel, depending on if you still have cheese in after Christmas.

I couldn't do it :( I'd have to drop it off to a vet and let them do it :(

Yeah. If I had to choose my demise, I'd much rather be slowly mauled to death by a tiger than killed instantly with a blow to the head.

The cat dropped it and ran. HmmThe cats owner has to be responsible and deal with this. Hopefully by now she's done the decent, responsible, humane thing and dispatched the poor beast by now.
I'm sure no-one remotely enjoys this task but sometimes its necessary and people who are too squeamish are the cruel ones, putting their own delicate feelings above the suffering of a sentient being.

WishIMite · 10/01/2024 17:22

I put it in a food waste bag, tie a knot, stamp quickly and decisively with a boot and pop into the food waste.

LoobyDop · 10/01/2024 17:28

Oh fgs, just give it back to the bloody cat and let nature take its course.

tortoiseshellcats · 10/01/2024 17:29

As a vet I would 100% be interested in helping the poor thing, no one I've worked with would ever laugh about someone bringing it in. We have very quick, humane ways of euthanising them and I've dealt with lots of wildlife casualties before. We wouldn't charge for this. Not all vets are the same unfortunately but absolutely worth phoning your local practice and asking. Most vets I know would definitely want to help

If it’s anything like my cat, it wouldn’t be interested once it had injured it. It just likes to maim wildlife and then toy with it. Cats are absolute sociopaths.

Keepingthingsinteresting · 10/01/2024 17:33

This is why cats are fucking horrible creatures. This has really upset me- do it now @Tosieposie you’re making it worse and prolonging it’s suffering - if you’re going to keep cats you have no right to be squeamish. If you care get rid of the nasty little monster that lives in your house.

This has really triggered me. I hate fucking cats.

Why would you say this? What is wrong with you- were you a cat in a previous life. Just horrible.

Missingmyusername · 10/01/2024 17:38

BetteDavisChin · 10/01/2024 14:55

This is why I don't like cats.

RSPCA approved method for killing sick piglets on a pig farm is to hold it by its back legs and swing its head against concrete wall or floor.

Try that.

Jesus Christ.

Missingmyusername · 10/01/2024 17:39

Horrible thread.

Needtogrowsproutsfordecember · 10/01/2024 17:40

If you have a dcat you need to accept the death of mice and birds... Ime.

Polis · 10/01/2024 17:40

We have an air pistol for circumstances like this. My husband deals with them. He has shown me how to use the gun. Thankfully, I’ve never needed to.
