Safe places in Uk

Following on from the thread where someone asked have you visited a place that made you feel unsafe - have you been somewhere in the uk that feels safe?
Its rather depressing realising how much of the UK is ‘rough’ now. My home town was mentioned on the unsafe thread several times.
The places I have visited that felt safe are

St Alban’s
York
Cardiff (although that is getting rougher)
Brixham in Devon

A feeling of safety is entirely subjective though, isn’t it? Someone who’s been brought up in a very rural non diverse location will feel differently about an inner city location than someone who has only ever know that very urban environment.

I think that central London is the safest place at night for a lone female.

There are so many people about, safety in numbers. The tube & busses are still busy so you dont get stuck alone with questionable men.

Also most people out late are workers or tourists not drunk gangs of youths.

Towns and villages in..

The Lake District
The Cotswolds
The Peak District

Someone mentioned earlier that they felt safe in Sheffield, I can only assume you didn't visit the city centre, especially at night.

Even though I don’t like the place generally, I felt
very safe in Edinburgh. This was in winter though, maybe when the Fringe is on its different.

St Albans was pretty rough in my day. There were pubs you wouldn't go in, and around the station area always felt a bit dangerous at night if you were alone. The high street always felt OK although there was quite a big drug scene in the town centre. All pretty gentrified now.

I find most strange places feel a bit unsafe, mainly because you don't know them well enough to know what the dangers might be. Fear of the unknown.

I lived in St Albans for 20 years up until a couple of years ago and always felt very safe. I could walk home from the station in the pitch black alone in my early twenties, after all the streetlights had gone off, and never once encountered a problem. I definitely took it for granted!

The problem with the question is that there is no context.

I cannot think of anywhere where I would not feel safe at midday on a nice sunny day.

But the same place on a dark, rainy day? Maybe not (and the weather matters because of the number of people out and about and whether people are heads down looking at the floor etc.)

Generally I feel safe anywhere busy. So I lived in a rough part of the east End and didn't worry about coming home at 1 am on the train, as the streets were still busy as I walked home. But a quiet dark suburban street at 6 pm can feel very unsafe)

It also depends on who you are. I am white, quite tall and strong and I am nearly always out and about in a car. Not the same for others.
I really feel for PP who said they don't feel safe in the countryside. My dh is not British, but white, and we lived in a village for a while and he never felt welcome or accepted. It was not nice at all.

I don’t think it’s a question of the places BEING unsafe but a combination of either a vibe or just too different to where you live. There was a post on the other thread that mentioned somewhere that was full of vape shops, Turkish barbers and nail salons making them feel unsafe?? But I guess if you live very rural it probably adds to the feeling of uncertainty.

tbh many of those posts were giving “i am outside of my white people bubble.”

I also find York city centre to feel very safe but I think it’s because it’s very small with lots of pedestrian only areas?

Yes, I understand what you mean. I haven’t given much context.
I suppose I mean on a day to day basis if you had to walk everywhere day or night. The sorts of places where you still feel a sense of community spirit, where you don’t see lots of gangs or smell weed on every corner. Do places like that still exist in the UK?

It’s kind of sad that the list of places that feel unsafe on the other thread is huge, whereas places you feel safe on this thread is tiny and basically consists of London and St. Albans 😂. It says a lot about the state of the Uk I suppose.

It's because there's far too many to list.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/01/2024 11:46

I live in Nottingham and have never felt unsafe. Despite only living round the corner from where those two students were stabbed. It was one off.

It’s all a perception though isn’t it? My hometown was mentioned at least 5 times on the other thread, I’ve never ever felt unsafe there, probably because I know it well and know there are small pockets of the place I wouldn’t go to having no need to buy or trade drugs or knives.
I tend to feel safe everywhere, I’m a confident person and don’t think someone is out to get me all the time.

Loads of places are like that. I've lived in lots of different bits of SE London and felt safe in all of them.

Yalta · 02/08/2024 22:13

Lived in London for most of my life and feel very safe. There is always someone about. I get off work at 2am/3am and the streets are teeming with people. Walk to the car holds no fear.

Lived in a few cities around the UK and those places are where I did feel unsafe. Firstly late at night or early hours of the morning I could be on my own walking back to my car and that was creepy
Even during the day I have felt unsafe in these towns and cities

Yet it is London that everyone thinks is this unsafe area

Perfectlystill · 02/08/2024 22:18

Nearly everywhere in the UK feels safe.

I have only felt unsafe in Nottingham.
