Safe places in Uk

BestPlace · 10/01/2024 11:12

Following on from the thread where someone asked have you visited a place that made you feel unsafe - have you been somewhere in the uk that feels safe?
Its rather depressing realising how much of the UK is ‘rough’ now. My home town was mentioned on the unsafe thread several times.
The places I have visited that felt safe are

St Alban’s
York
Cardiff (although that is getting rougher)
Brixham in Devon

Where I live.

ShirleyPhallus · 10/01/2024 11:27

I’ve lived in London for nearly 20 years and have felt safe that entire time

That’s one I forgot - when I was a teen I went and met a friend in London by myself and felt very safe too. Neither of us were from London and we wandered around it completely safely even though we didn’t really know where we were going (before mobile phones).

I've never felt unsafe in the UK and I've lived in several places. I've traveled a lot too. In fact I've only ever felt unsafe in one place in the all the places in the world I've visited and that was just one street in a place that otherwise was perfectly safe.

anothernamechangeagainsndagain · 10/01/2024 13:27

I can't remember ever feeling unsafe in the U.K. and I've live in multiple areas, travelled about etc. I'm not saying that there isn't undesirable places just that they are pretty localised and small in number. Now South Central LA that did feel unsafe, took a wrong exit off I5 and then went wrong pre satnavs.

susanrosebush · 10/01/2024 13:31

Most places.

TannedFrombirth · 10/01/2024 13:33

A lot of places in the UK I'd avoid as a poc - literally no go areas

susanrosebush · 10/01/2024 13:35

@TannedFrombirth That's very sad to hear, may I ask are you UK born and raised and where do you feel safe/unsafe? My friend is Senegalese and was gawped at and petted in Japan when studying there, she's since moved back to Senegal and seems to be much happier.

WeneedSamVimesonthecase · 10/01/2024 13:39

Came in to say St Albans - I live here, and have happily wandered around at all hours without concern.

TannedFrombirth · 10/01/2024 13:39

@susanrosebush yes I am UK born and raised, but my parents were born abroad. My partner is white british. I don't really feel safe in the countryside tbh I have had many not so nice experiences, I tend to only feel safe in larger cities which are diverse. I quite like Peterborough when I went last year, had a few stares but that was it.

Meadowfinch · 10/01/2024 13:48

Most places in the UK feel safe.

I live in the south but went to Sheffield, Hexham and Durham recently with work, and all felt fine.

RobinHoodsMum · 10/01/2024 14:00

I like Nottinghamshire, St Albans, Norwich. Re the countryside I'm half Nigerian half Greek and I find the British countryside to be the most peaceful, safe and serene place to visit out of anywhere I've been in the UK. Never once felt scared or unsafe because I'm brown, feel more on edge walking around people who resemble me in Finsbury Park. My experience of rural, countryside UK is fields, the odd old and lonely church, blackberry bushes, barely anyone about and the if you're lucky the clip clop of hooves. Only see white people about but never have I been racially abused or had a problem with it. I love Nigeria, there is a wonderful community spirit, people are very family oriented, hard workers and the scenery is like a dream. But there is also a lot of political corruption, lawlessness and unrest that it would be hard for any British person to grasp and it is need of major restructuring. There is so much corruption that the Nigerian dream is one of moving to the West which is a tragedy given the sheer scale of the country and potential for progress if only the elites cared about the people than lining their pockets. Yes there are unsafe places to live in the UK but don't throw the towel in, you are also one of the best countries to live in the world, the grass isn't always greener.

Petrine · 10/01/2024 14:13

@TannedFrombirth What and where were the many bad experiences you've had in the countryside?

INeedNewShoes · 10/01/2024 14:25

I felt safer in London than anywhere else I've ever lived.

scaredofff · 10/01/2024 14:35

I'm in Scotland and it always feel safe to me. You get the odd 'dodgy' area in every town or city

Disasterclass · 10/01/2024 21:41

Definitely London.

Interesting that lots of people are saying St Albans. I'm sure it's very safe but whenever I've visited there is absolutely no one on the streets which freaks me out as a Londoner who is used to people being on the streets at all times. Don't mean it's unsafe, and presumably just a car culture, but I can't get on board with it at all.

As a caveat I tend to visit suburbs on a weekend

TannedFrombirth · 10/01/2024 21:50

@Petrine too many to list. Any place where there is next to no diversity I tend to avoid as I know I'm going to be the victim of prejudice. My kids are mixed and not as dark as me but they're still not white. I feel safe in London - safety in numbers and all that.

I can only assume you've never visited on market day!

Beckafett · 10/01/2024 22:53

Just commenting re York where I work and most of my colleagues live. Lots of tourists lots of the time but mainly in certain areas; I guess it's what makes you feel unsafe?
I live in one of the towns that I'm sure would appear on a list but its certain parts of the centre i would avoid (literally a 30m area).
Some people don't find areas safe owing to it being different to what they are used to.

Likewise

Perfectlystill · 10/01/2024 23:03

The only place I've ever felt unsafe in Britain was Nottingham.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 10/01/2024 23:08

@Beckafett @Perfectlystill

This thread was asking where you feel safe - rather than unsafe . Might seem an odd question but there is currently another thread about feeling unsafe which has covered the majority of the UK - plus a good portion of the rest of the world!

BestPlace · 11/01/2024 10:13

It’s kind of sad that the list of places that feel unsafe on the other thread is huge, whereas places you feel safe on this thread is tiny and basically consists of London and St. Albans 😂. It says a lot about the state of the Uk I suppose.

St Albans isn't a suburb, it has a cathedral so it's a city. With great parking and a pedestrianised centre.
It's always bustling when I visit.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 11/01/2024 10:17

I've felt safe and unsafe in various cities and towns around the world. It's not dependent on the town or city, it depends on what people are doing around me at the time. For example, if someone's walking behind me for a long time I will feel unsafe anywhere. I think it's best to keep your wits about you wherever you are.
