Are we weird?

My DC were with their dad this weekend so DP and I headed into town and ran some non child friendly errands. We went to our favourite bookshop and each bought a couple of books. We went home and picked up the dog and had a sniffy walk through the woods to our local pub, bought a bottle of wine (x2) and sat at opposite ends of a sofa with the dog between us and read our new books while drinking wine. In my head, it was bliss! We’d done the necessary, and walked the pooch and after the crazy of Christmas we were very happy to chill out with some relaxed lighting, ambient music, a bit of buzz and no calls on our attention. Dog was quite content too. We walked home after and made tea.
My friend says we’re weird and that only sad people go to the pub and sit in silence, ignoring each other and we should have stayed at home. What do you think?

Nothing wrong with that at all. Imagine how boring life would be if we all liked to do the same things

daisychain01 · 08/01/2024 06:39

Just don't tell your friend what you and your DP choose to do for your entertainment and you won't get unwarranted opinion.

Sounds lovely to me!

Lulu1919 · 08/01/2024 06:49

Sounds lovely ...keep doing it !!!!

Metallicant · 08/01/2024 07:04

Your friend sounds weird and maybe a bit jealous to me.

We do this 3 or 4 times a year. It is expensive, I think it was £40 for the wine but we were there for about 3 hours and we didn’t need to get a taxi home home, etc… At home I would have been twittering about ‘doing stuff’ whereas in the pub I could just chill and read my book without seeing housework when I wanted to relax.
No, we hadn’t fallen out! Although I can instead why you might think that!

It sounds amazing. As long as the books don't disguise the fact you have nothing to say to each other.

Sounds lovely (apart from seems a lot of alcohol)

StoatofDisarray · 08/01/2024 07:15

Your friend is weird!

AuntieMarys · 08/01/2024 07:18

It's something we do but without the dog!
And at home too...we can sit in complete silence reading apart from " could you just top me up" and " fancy some crisps".

Flatandhappy · 08/01/2024 07:22

Sounds bliss to me.

BeaRF75 · 08/01/2024 07:23

Sounds completely fabulous! Maybe your friend is just jealous....

SallyWD · 08/01/2024 07:25

Sounds like bliss to me. I wouldn't have thought you'd had a argument like a pp said. You're only truly comfortable with someone when you can sit in silence with them.

Snowdogsmitten · 08/01/2024 07:39

The only but I would change would be the two bottles of wine. I’d be leathered after that.

Lwrenagain · 08/01/2024 07:45

Not weird nah but hearing sniffy walk made me smile, my old wee nana said that when I was little, we'd take her ddog (I love ddog, nobody come for me!) On sniffy walks to our local woods.

Even if it was weird, as long as what you're doing isn't harming anyone wtf is your friends problem?

RaininSummer · 08/01/2024 07:50

Sounds lovely. We used to go to pub and sit with their newspapers. If you live with there isn't the need to chatter incessantly.

Some of this sounds lovely (dog walk; pub; reading).

Some sounds exhausting (2 bottles of wine in the middle of the day = 😴)

And some is just plain twee: 'Favourite bookshop' 🙄. Do you just mean 'bookshop'.

But on balance I think, not weird.

Why can one not have a favourite bookshop? Confused

TheseLegsDefinitelyUsedToBeLonger · 08/01/2024 07:58

Sounds lovely @Icantremembermyusername ! We'd rather opt for a hot chocolate at home instead of wine at a pub following a sniffy walk (yep our dog loves those as well) but we're all different, that's what makes us all fab! Grin

PiggieWig · 08/01/2024 08:01

Sounds bliss and I’m actually considering updating my OLD profile to say that’s what I want in life!

The whole thing sounds twee, especially the updates about the dog on the couch snuggling in.

The peaceful reading sounds good though!

orangejuicebrooklyn · 08/01/2024 08:29

Sounds fabulous! I'm an introvert too but there's something quite relaxing about reading while surrounded by the noise and buzz of other people doing their thing. You can be snug in your own little reading world but still be 'part of the world'.

Sounds like your friend is more extroverted and thinks that pubs are just for socialising. You actually ARE socialising, just not in a way she recognises.

I’ve never felt like I had to keep what I did at the weekend a secret in case I got unwanted opinions on it. I’d say the OP needs new friends rather than new hobbies.

Anjea · 08/01/2024 08:45

I would think you'd had a row but it would only cross my mind fleetingly.

If you like it crack on.

Ludovik · 08/01/2024 09:01

Sounds like a perfect afternoon. We would have got cake/pudding too if it was a food pub.

OceanicBoundlessness · 08/01/2024 09:22

I love reading in cafes and live the buzz of Pele out and about, having someone there to sit in company but enjoy a bit of quiet time sounds lovely .
Quiet reading groups are becoming popular, where people have a chat for half an hour and then read.

Diplidocus4 · 08/01/2024 11:10

Sounds perfect to me!
What did you eat ?
Very important (to me)
