'Old school' dinners

Guinness00 · 07/01/2024 18:32

My son is 4 and has ASD. I'm trying to get him to eat better meals (he was brilliant as a baby!). He ate mince in gravy with mash potato and veg today. I couldn't be more proud. What other easy 'old school' dinners could I make that fit the bill for children? Bonus points for a recipe of sorts/point in the right direction.

Cauli cheese.

SapatSea · 07/01/2024 18:40

Small pasta shapes and wet bolognaise sauce - since he liked the wet mince in gravy
Macaroni cheese ( with blitzed green veg in it)
Fish fingers, mash and peas, broccoli
Cottage/shepherd's pie
Irish stew
Minced Pork and kidney bean (chilli) and rice
Creamy chicken and mushroom pie with pastry top and veg
sausage pasta, sausage and mash
You can try mashing cauliflower in with the potatoes or try other mash like celeriac, sweet potato, swede and carrot or a white bean mash in addition to potato mash to see if he will try it
Lasagne
Mince beef and gravy pie with shortcrust pastry top, mash, veg

LevelBy · 07/01/2024 18:40

They often don't like food that touches other food or that comes in a stew or lasagne type dishes

Looking at you DS 18

I mean today I cooked a Normandy chicken casserole with mash and he just wanted his chicken leg shredded with a bit of the cooked shallots in a baguette with some lettuce Confused

He wouldn't entertain the idea of even trying a mouthful of mash with the chicken onion and sauce combined

LessonsLearnedInLife · 07/01/2024 18:41

Shepherds pie/cottage pie
Corned beef hash
Cheesy potato bake
Macaroni cheese
Meatballs
Jacket potatoes with toppings

Chops with mash and veg?

Guinness00 · 07/01/2024 18:41

Fab thank you. Fish pie and sausages sound good. He loves cauli cheese. I could do mac+cheese with cauli in .. don't know why I'd didn't think of that. Or sausage pasta bake too!

Ah thank you. These are amazing! I usually eat more Asian food which he won't touch so I'm not good at thinking of things. I'm loving these suggestions. The chicken creamy pie filling is a great idea. He won't eat pastry.

@LevelBy my go to is to smother in ketchup to get him to try it. I've had to go back to feeding him but he is eating!!!

Meatloaf and gravy with spuds and peas.
Meatloaf can also be sliced and made into sandwiches when cold.

FlyingCherub · 07/01/2024 18:55

My grandson is 10 and every time he stays, I have to make him a mound of mashed potato on a plate, add in some sausages cut in half to stick in it along with broccoli stems to make trees on the mashed potato island, and surround the whole lot with gravy and peas.

The funny thing is that DH asks for the same Grin

AyeRightYeAre · 07/01/2024 19:01

If he likes mince and tatties try

haggis, neeps (turnip) and tatties
Any kind of casserole
Homemade steak and sausage pie with a puff pastry lid
Mince pie (short crust pastry)
Roast dinners

Mumaway · 07/01/2024 19:02

Broth? Boil up a ham knuckle with chopped onion, carrots and 'soup mix' which has barley in it. Scrape ham off bone once cooked then season. Yum.

Guinness00 · 07/01/2024 19:04

Fiancé is from Scotland, this was his very good suggestion (we had steak pie on NYD also a win!) I'll try him with Haggis when we have it on 25th @AyeRightYeAre

Cheese pie that squeaks

With tinned tomatoes and mashed potato

MotherWol · 07/01/2024 19:11

Stovies
Hotpot
Bubble & squeak

basically, potato-based things!

SoOutingWhoCares · 07/01/2024 19:15

When I was a kid M&S did a children's ready meal that I loved. It was "Chicken, Rice and Vegetables".

I think it was chicken breast chopped up small and soften in butter with finely chopped onions and carrots, then long grain rice and possibly some stock. Then some peas through it. It was very simple and comforting.

Chestnutsroastgreen · 07/01/2024 19:31

I do a mac and cheese that has leeks in the sauce and add roast cauliflower to it. Think was a BBC good food recipe.

sausage and gravy in Yorkshire pudding

OggyBunsen · 07/01/2024 19:37

Faggots, mash and peas is a meal similar yet different to your OP.

Chicken casserole - bone in chicken pieces (I prefer thigh) brown in a large stockpot, add sliced carrots, chopped onion, sliced leek, diced swede, cubed parsnip, chopped garlic, brown veg, add chicken stock and handful of pearl barley and tsp herbs de Provence, cook 45 mins, meanwhile make dumplings (6 oz flour, 3 oz suet, pinch of sage) with a little water to form 8 balls. Put into pan and cook further 15 mins.
