Where to stay in London

Dh and I are going to see Peter Kay in Nov at the o2. We are going to stay for two nights so we can see some other sights.

Can anyone recommend a hotel that's easy for the o2 and seeing sights.

There's a lot of hotels around the O2 or Greenwich which is nearby. You could also look at hotels at the Excel which is across the river and accessible via the cable cars.

Thanks @ohnohodeho I like the sound of the cable cars Grin

I wouldn’t stay out there, zero nice places to eat or wander. And it’s so easy to get to the o2 on the tube. What about Hoxton Southwark? I stayed there last year (although I only live in zone 3), and there’s a lovely rooftop restaurant with amazing views, lots to see on Southbank, You can wander down to borough or over the river to St Paul’s, pop into tate modern. It’s only about 15 mins to o2 on the jubilee line.

PollyIndia · 07/01/2024 20:13

Or if that’s too expensive, I have friends from wales who stayed at premier inn Southwark. Just round the corner

Nagado · 07/01/2024 20:37

I’d stay at Citizen M at Tower Hill. It’s across the road from the Tower of London and the bus stop to get to Charing Cross station and right next door to the tube station and the DLR, which is a lovely way to get down to Greenwich. You can pay a little bit extra to guarantee a room overlooking the tower. It’s a fab hotel; there’s one in Shoreditch and the south bank, but we like the Tower Hill one best.

QueSyrahSyrah · 07/01/2024 20:42

If you're looking for a cheap base we often stay at Travelodge London Bank which is 2 minutes walk from Bank, Monument and Canon Street Tubes.

Google Maps says 36 minutes via District & Jubilee lines to the O2, but you're much closer to central London for the other sites and you can get pretty much anywhere easily between those 3 nearby tube stops.

Ginmonkeyagain · 07/01/2024 20:42

The area around North Greenwich has a lot of chain hotels (Holiday Inn, Travel Lodge etc..) due to the Olympics.

Waterloo has a number of hotels for different budgets, that will be easy for the gig as it is on the Jubilee line (about 15 mins from North Greenwich) but also an easy walk in to the West End (plus the Southbank is great for an evening stroll).

cherrypickles · 07/01/2024 20:46

When I went to a concert at the Olympic Stadium we stayed at double tree Canary Wharf and it is and absolute schlep to get to central London - tube DLR A LONG WALK and a bloody boat!

Hilton Bankside is nice for south bank, ration mercer street nice for Covent Garden.

MortifiedSeptember · 07/01/2024 20:51

I would book one of the hotels near the Excel, then take the long way to o2. By taking the dlr and switching it to get to Greenwich and then taking uber boat to o2. On the return journey, I would take the cable car.

Then you would have travelled via land, sea and air.

Talkinpeace · 07/01/2024 20:54

The O2
and the Olympic stadium
are NOT the same place

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 07/01/2024 20:57

Avoid the area by excel - yes it is easy on Cable Car from o2 but is also dead.

Either stay in Central Greenwich (short bus ride from o2) and explore Greenwich as well as central stuff, or stay anywhere on the Jubilee Line as North Greenwich tube is right next to the o2.

Ah yes sorry not clear - half a story.

Yes not the same place but same idea: concert venues to the east of central London than can be a bit of schlep to get to. Hotel choice was Totally dead and not a shop in sight and required a Kat to get anywhere!

Main point - stay some where central or with a bit of life!

Talkinpeace · 07/01/2024 21:13

If you are doing two nights, stay near the Cutty Sark

  • easy DLR into town
  • river boats
  • east trundle to the O2
  • easy access back to the motorway
SheilaFentiman · 07/01/2024 21:15

What sights do you want to see and approx what is your budget?

Noneofourbusiness · 09/01/2024 01:44

Lots to look into from this list. Thank you all.

@SheilaFentiman budget up to £2k for hotel. Sights
Red hop on/off bus
London Eye
Houses of Parliament
Buckingham Palace
Think that's it Confused

I think one of the Waterloo hotels will be perfect for that then. You can easily walk to the London Eye and HoP from there. Buckingham Palace is a longer but nice walk across the river and through the parks.

QueSyrahSyrah · 09/01/2024 07:39

£2k for the hotel for 2 nights? Goodness me!

Forget my budget option then, I'd stay at Shagri-La at the Shard for that budget and be 10 minutes on the Jubilee line to the O2, or 10/15 minutes the other way to London Eye and Houses of Parliament.

Ginmonkeyagain · 09/01/2024 07:44

Ha! I has assumed £2k was the budget for the whole trip! OP don't spend 2k on hotels if you are going to be out and about all the time. You can get a decent, clean chain hotel room (think premier inn, tavel lodge or one of the other chains) for a couple of hundred or so a night if you book early. Use the rest of the budget for something fun.

Wictc · 09/01/2024 07:49

Stay central. It’s a wasteland by the O2. Sounds like you want to do traditional tourist things, so stay around the west end. You could get a basic room at Claridges, it has a lovely pool and restaurant.

Tootingbec · 09/01/2024 08:13

Even in London you don’t need to spend £2k on a hotel 😵‍💫🤣

Agree with staying somewhere close to Waterloo - really easy to get to major sights and very quick in the Jubilee line to O2.

I would 100% stay in a Premier Inn if just 2 nights and spend your budget on lovely restaurants or exhibitions/theatre you fancy seeing

Ginmonkeyagain · 09/01/2024 08:38

My rule of thumb for city breaks is get a hotel or apartment that is central but basic - I don't mind a bit old fashioned or spartan but I do expect a clean room and en suite facilities (eg at least an en suite shower and toilet). In a city you don't need breakfast - there are usually loads of better value and more interesting cafes nearby.

You don't want to spend loads on a room you only really see to sleep at night but also you don't want to spend loads of time and money on public transport.

fourelementary · 09/01/2024 08:41

The premiere Inn at Tower Hill was great and you could get a wee uber boat to the o2 which is fun- they’re docked just at Tower Bridge. You can walk around the area, coffee shops and restaurants there etc and lots of tube links too to get into the centre/tourist area.
Enjoy!

Ginmonkeyagain · 09/01/2024 08:45

Ooh yes, the boats are a fun way to get to the O2. They have (or used to anyway) on board bar so you can start your evening.
