Are you a secret Mumsnetter?

Does your family/friends/colleagues know you’re on here?

Do you sometimes find yourself bringing up topics into conversation that you’ve read on MN?

Have you ever “caught” anyone on MN in public, or have been “caught” yourself?

Anyone on here who you think you actually would like to be friends with, based purely on something they’ve posted about or commented on?

I’d like to meet The Sistine Chapel Wailer 😆… I think!

I guess we’re all stealth MNs then 😉

More a case of nobody I know knowing anything about it - they're not much into internet stuff in general, and I'm in Australia, so I wouldn't expect them to be reading it if they were.

Bloatstoat · 07/01/2024 21:10

There was a thread before Christmas suggesting wearing a Christmas scarf as an alternative to a Christmas jumper e.g. if required to forba work event. What I good idea I thought but had already sourced a hot scratchy Christmas jumper for my work Christmas event. My manager turned up looking cool and classy in a nice blouse with a Christmas scarf on - I would love to know if she's a mumsnetter and got the idea from here but I chickened out of asking her!

cherrypickles · 07/01/2024 21:12

Ha yes totally!

Another poster said they had a secret code with a co conspirator MNetter which was they "heard it on radio 4" rather than I read it on mumsnet!

I often ask mumsnet when no one else has the answer!

AnxiousPangolin · 07/01/2024 21:19

I definitely don’t tell people I read/post on MN because frankly it’s so batshit these days that I would be embarrassed to.

Quite honestly, I question myself as to why I still read because I find the majority of threads annoying due to people being downright thick, illiterate or deliberately obtuse.

It's possible my children have seen Mumsnet over my shoulder but none of my other family or friends know I'm here. I tend to be here on and off more as lurker anyway, sticking up my head every now and then when I have some time. There is one person who has been around for a while that I recognise, but they wouldn't know who I am.

Tonight1 · 07/01/2024 21:33

No, I don't think my friends would be interested in MN

C1N1C · 07/01/2024 21:36

Apparently I don't shut up about it...

Sphynxcatenthusiast · 07/01/2024 21:40

I’m always referring to MN to my amused friends.
Obviously I don’t tell them my user name which I keep changing anyway.

Says the person spending her time reading & posting on a thread she hates reading and posting on

Devilsmommy · 07/01/2024 21:44

C1N1C · 07/01/2024 21:36

Apparently I don't shut up about it...

🤣🤣🤣 me too. I'm always reading posts out to my DH.

JeezJerry · 07/01/2024 21:46

DH knows I'm a Mumsnetter, , think he secretly wishes he was too! Not sure if anyone else knows, I wouldn't keep it a secret but it's never come up in conversations with Friends.

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 07/01/2024 21:47

My husband knows but wouldn't know my name. No one else knows. I'm definitely not the usual demographic

AnxiousPangolin · 07/01/2024 21:48

It’s amusing that I’m the very definition of a secret MNer, yet posters are choosing to pile on me to tell me to fuck off just because I explained why I’m a secret MNer.

WhateverMate · 07/01/2024 21:49

My DH and DC know but I'd never tell anyone else.

At least 3 women I sometimes work with have admitted to being MNetters though, and sometimes talk about current threads.

BuddhaAtSea · 07/01/2024 21:51

It’s the number one rule of Mumsnet. Absolutely would not bring it up with anybody.

strawberryjeans · 07/01/2024 21:51

No one knows hopefully. I wonder what percentage of our friends / family / colleagues actually use it? I can’t work out if it’s as popular as say, Facebook or not!

TokyoSushi · 07/01/2024 21:52

Only DH knows, but he doesn't really know what it is...

Nobody else though, I know a lot of things 'from the internet' it would seem!

Evanesy · 07/01/2024 21:54

My husband knows I’m on here - after a thread I posted about an issue we were having was shared by MN on Facebook, and by some extreme coincidence, it came up as suggested on his Facebook feed!

maybejustonemoretime · 07/01/2024 21:55

I have recommended it to a few people who are struggling with in laws or teenagers or whatever but I don't generally because I want to feel free to say what I like and I enjoy the anonymity.
I'm definitely stealing the heard it on radio 4 line as I do sometimes struggle to give context to stuff I've learnt from here if I share it.

MissSookieStackhouse · 07/01/2024 21:58

My DP knows I’m on it and when we’re driving somewhere long distance he asks me to read any funny MN threads to entertain him! (There aren’t as many funny ones as there used to be unfortunately.) He doesn’t ask or know my user name though!

JaneJeffer · 07/01/2024 21:58

Sounds like a recruitment drive for a documentary Confused

Tonight1 · 07/01/2024 22:01

It's a bit difficult trying to recount something to someone without saying MN. I usually just say someone said...
