Why does DH smell of truffle oil?

Junebughustle · 05/01/2024 09:19

DH is a very clean man who doesn't like anything even resembling mushrooms - so doesn't eat truffle flavoured things. Over the last few months I've noticed when he comes to bed after showering and brushing his teeth, he smells exactly like truffle oil to me.

Granted, I am 8 weeks pregnant and the smell seems stronger to me now, but I'd caught whiffs of it before.

Has anyone else experienced this? I had to turn away from him yesterday, even though I love the smell of truffles (when hungry!)

It is probably because you are pregnant. Sense of smell goes bonkers especially at the begining of the pregnancy.

jalopy · 05/01/2024 09:59

How old is he?

TomatoSandwiches · 05/01/2024 10:04

It's most likely your hormones, I remember distinctly hating the smell of my husband after he woke up every morning, it made me ill sometimes so I slept in the nursery for a while.
I could smell people on the bus or tube strongly as well, made me vomit once.

He's 40. I do wonder if it's pregnancy but I'm sure I'd noticed it before getting pregnant, but it was mild and bearable!

@TomatoSandwiches ah that sounds horrible!! Did things go back to normal?

Better than him smelling of shit or piss?

Musntapplecrumble · 05/01/2024 10:48

😂definitely SuperNose! I used to get that monthly, too!

WandaWonder · 05/01/2024 10:53

Truffles smell like wet cardboard to me so not sure what they are meant to smell of

Junebughustle · 05/01/2024 10:55

@Mehmeh22 definitely but this is so unusual I was wondering if there's a health/hormonal issue.

He smells just like truffle flavoured crisps or truffle fries.

His smell hasn't changed. It's just your ability to smell it has increased.

Is it a damp towel?
His shower gel?
Shaving foam?
Marmite to eat?

You could go the whole PG trying to figure it out only to find it's bare able again once your hormones calm down.

jalopy · 05/01/2024 12:02

I'm sure it's probably related to your heightened sense of smell in pregnancy although some health conditions can be detected by super smellers.

Junebughustle · 05/01/2024 12:07

Will check his towels etc. Could be a change in body smell, thanks @PurplePim. Hopefully it's a pregnancy thing, I really don't want to hurt his feelings if it persists.

I recently noticed I smell of tea brewing. It's driving me loopy. I think I'm menopausal and either smellier than usual or have a heighten sense of smell. Bicarb bath seems to neutralise it a bit.

TomeTome · 05/01/2024 12:13

When I was pregnant I could smell when people had just had a shot or needed to. It was horrendous

Junebughustle · 05/01/2024 13:51

@TomeTome if that means what I think it does, that's horrendous!

I've realised the whole room now reeks of truffle oil to me 🤢 so will have to strip the bedding.

I loved truffle crisps/chips but can't stand the thought of them now.

Yes by the third trimester it had settled.
I could literally smell everyone though.

amyds2104 · 07/01/2024 17:15

I Don’t know how universal it is but when my husband became diabetic I swear his body odour changed. Obviously this is not saying your husband is diabetic but your post reminded me about my hubby. His was more olive oily though…. Very odd

Renamed · 07/01/2024 17:38

Truffle oil smells like petrol to me. Is he using some kind of Manly Scent?

wateraddict · 07/01/2024 17:53

I had this in pregnancy. It's now I realised I was pregnant... within days I thought the shower was burning out when I switched it on but my husband couldn't smell anything. Milk smelt off. Perfumes made me gag, coffee tasted weird too. Garlic was an absolute no, I could smell it on us for days. I hope it passes soon! Congratulations on your pregnancy

Ilovelurchers · 07/01/2024 17:53

I just googled this - says it's a bi-product of testosterone that causes the truffle smell in men? Not sure why it would have increased tho - could be worth your husband getting his hormones checked maybe? I am sure it's nothing sinister, but I would always say check anything strange just in case, as if there was any little thing wrong it is always best to catch things as early as possible.....

Your thread interested me because I love the smell of my current husband to the extent that I will just lie and sniff him.sometimes, especially his face and neck - he calls me a weirdo but likes it really I think! I find it hard to define his smell - there is a sweet element like caramel, some spiciness, and also a muskier note that could almost be truffly. And I have sometimes noticed it's even better just after sex - maybe that makes sense with the testosterone thing?

janfebmarchapril · 07/01/2024 20:36

No advice but yum what a lush smell

catsnore · 07/01/2024 20:59

It must be your pregnancy superpowers kicking in.

In my first pregnancy there was a bedding set I couldn't use any more on our bed because the smell of the fabric was just totally weird to me. It made no sense at all - was fine before and fine after but whilst pregnant the smell was just very very odd 😂

Ditto tea, coffee. The smell of meat cooking made me hurl and I had to put the bin outside most days. I could smell people's perfume/aftershave from metres away. Once a car drove past with the windows down and I could smell that the person had a horse 😬

Start calling yourself supernose 😂

If it's bad breath you could get him to try some Blis k12 oral probiotics, apparently they have all sorts of benefits but will sort bad breath amongst the benefits.
It probably is just pregnancy causing you to be super sensitive, but covid infection can mess with you sense of smell too - might be worth doing a test to rule that out too?
